We started with a blank slate on this basement project where our only obstacles were exposed steel support columns, existing plumbing risers from the concrete slab, and dropped soffits concealing ductwork on the ceiling. It had the advantage of tall ceilings, an existing egress window, and a sliding door leading to a newly constructed patio.
This family of five loves the beach and frequents summer beach resorts in the Northeast. Bringing that aesthetic home to enjoy all year long was the inspiration for the décor, as well as creating a family-friendly space for entertaining.
Wish list items included room for a billiard table, wet bar, game table, family room, guest bedroom, full bathroom, space for a treadmill and closed storage. The existing structural elements helped to define how best to organize the basement. For instance, we knew we wanted to connect the bar area and billiards table with the patio in order to create an indoor/outdoor entertaining space. It made sense to use the egress window for the guest bedroom for both safety and natural light. The bedroom also would be adjacent to the plumbing risers for easy access to the new bathroom. Since the primary focus of the family room would be for TV viewing, natural light did not need to filter into that space. We made sure to hide the columns inside of newly constructed walls and dropped additional soffits where needed to make the ceiling mechanicals feel less random.
In addition to the beach vibe, the homeowner has valuable sports memorabilia that was to be prominently displayed including two seats from the original Yankee stadium.
For a coastal feel, shiplap is used on two walls of the family room area. In the bathroom shiplap is used again in a more creative way using wood grain white porcelain tile as the horizontal shiplap “wood”. We connected the tile horizontally with vertical white grout joints and mimicked the horizontal shadow line with dark grey grout. At first glance it looks like we wrapped the shower with real wood shiplap. Materials including a blue and white patterned floor, blue penny tiles and a natural wood vanity checked the list for that seaside feel.
A large reclaimed wood door on an exposed sliding barn track separates the family room from the game room where reclaimed beams are punctuated with cable lighting. Cabinetry and a beverage refrigerator are tucked behind the rolling bar cabinet (that doubles as a Blackjack table!). A TV and upright video arcade machine round-out the entertainment in the room. Bar stools, two rotating club chairs, and large square poufs along with the Yankee Stadium seats provide fun places to sit while having a drink, watching billiards or a game on the TV.
Signed baseballs can be found behind the bar, adjacent to the billiard table, and on specially designed display shelves next to the poker table in the family room.
Thoughtful touches like the surfboards, signage, photographs and accessories make a visitor feel like they are on vacation at a well-appointed beach resort without being cliché.

For the eat-in kitchen we started with the Hunter Douglas Silhouettes on the windows to soften the harsh Florida light that can ruin furniture and floors within months. As additional decoration we added plain cornice boards in turquoises and browns with a half-inch cord in a contrasting color.
The table and chairs were a great find at a local store and the mixture of stainless steel and wood table with the leather and wicker chairs give a modernity to what could be a beach look.
The chandelier was a favorite. Made by Schonbek, this modern piece is covered in multi-colored Swarovski crystals which throw rays of light around the kitchen at night.

This beautiful white and gray marble floor and shower tile inspired the design for this bright and spa-like master bathroom. Gold sparkling flecks throughout the tile add warmth to an otherwise cool palette. Luxe gold fixtures pick up those gold details. Warmth and soft contrast were added through the butternut wood mantel and matching shelves for the toilet room. Our details are the mosaic side table, towels, mercury glass vases, and marble accessories.
The bath tub was a must! Truly a treat to enjoy a bath by the fire in this romantic space. The corner shower has ample space and luxury. Leaf motif marble tile are used in the shower floor. Patterns and colors are connected throughout the space for a cohesive, warm, and bright space.

In the living room, a massive black Venetian glass chandelier suspends dramatically from a 12-foot tray ceiling, offset by detailed triple-crown molding. Custom wall molding adds texture to charcoal gray walls.
Black granite frames the ventless fireplace, where black fire glass is used to conceal the gas plumbing lines.
A flat screen television and integrated speakers are among several devices comprising a home automation system that wirelessly controls technology by a wall-mounted iPad or any smartphone.
A long modular sofa with custom silk pillows anchors the living room seating arrangement, which is flanked by low-profile lounge chairs and a heavy slatted metal coffee table atop a large cowhide rug.
Metal nesting tables and porcelain garden stools quickly double as extra seating.
Louisiana artist Joseph “Jojo” Jilbert was commissioned to create a custom sculpture for the living room. Towering at more than eight feet, “Nebulas 1” is forged from fire in his signature style using reclaimed metal objects. The welded creation is modeled after the famed Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula, where light and heat from young stars create columns that are trillions of miles long. The sculpture is burnished to a deep patina and engraved with intricate scrollwork. Large Fiddle Leaf Fig ficuses bring color and texture to the opposing corner, offering a natural foil to the spiny details of the artwork.

This area had been previously unused, and was a bare wall on the way through to the bedroom. We decided to make it a dedicated dressing table for the homeowner, as the bathroom did not have enough room for all her hair and make-up and jewellery requirements!

This client wanted to make a jaw-dropping, glamorous, black and white statement in her massive formal dining room. Originally a boring beige living room and dining room, we ripped out the decorative columns and carpet and laid down a beautiful dark wood floor to coordinate with the rest of the house. We gave the space more architectural presence with a coffered ceiling with faux silver leafing and wainscotting. A wet bar offers plenty of wine and glass storage.
A burnt wood and cracked resin 14' long custom dining table seats 12 comfortably in this 32' long room. We upholstered the side chairs in a contract-grade white chenille that is kid- and pet-friendly. The host chairs are huge purple velvet wingbacks with silver nailheads. Two wide, gold, directional chandeliers add whimsy to the sophisticated space. A high gloss stencil covers the long wall and becomes a textured backdrop for a black and white art gallery. Gold silk draperies and ivory silk Roman shades are the finishing touch to this over-the-top luxe dining room.
