A family cottage in the Gatineau hills infused with Canadiana shifts its way over the edge of a cliff to command views of the adjacent lake. The retreat is gently embedded in the Canadian Shield; the sleeping quarters firmly set in the rock while the cantilevered family room dramatically emerges from this stone base. The modest entry visible from the road leads to an orchestrated, tranquil path entering from the forest-side of the house and moving through the space as it opens up onto the lakeside.
The house illustrates a warm approach to modernism; white oak boards wrap from wall to floor enhancing the elongated shape of the house and slabs of silver maple create the bathroom vanity. On the exterior, the main volume is wrapped with open-joint eastern white cedar while the stairwell is encased in steel; both are left unfinished to age with the elements.
On the lower level, the dormitory style sleeping quarters are again embedded into the rock. Access to the exterior is provided by a walkout from the lower level recreation room, allowing the family to easily explore nature.
Natural cooling is provided by cool air rising from the lake, passing in through the lakeside openings and out through the clerestory windows on the forest elevation. The expanse of windows engages the ephemeral foliage from the treetops to the forest floor. The softness and shadows of the filtered forest light fosters an intimate relationship between the exterior and the interior.

Check out the before and after of this art studio/office/yoga room in this series. When the homeowners bought the main house/property, they didn't even know this former shed existed. It and half the yard was so overgrown by Himalayan blackberry, that is was completely covered. Sparrow moved the entry from a single door on the side to this expansive slider, design custom stairs, redid the siding and finished the interior in finished plywood for a modern/scandanavian finish that could easily be used for whatever the homeowners wanted (and there were many ideas on the table!) Thanks to small-scale and functional furniture, they were also able to put guests up in this studio when they visited!

The ancient Cobble Stone pavers have been reclaimed from different locations across the Mediterranean making them unique and stunning in their off white creamy textures.
They come in random sizes and could be installed in either a running bond formation or a random ‘Versailles’ pattern.
Their durable nature makes them an excellent choice for outdoor use. They are unaffected by extreme climate and easily withstand heavy use due to the nature of their hard molecular structure.

When this 6,000-square-foot vacation home suffered water damage in its family room, the homeowners decided it was time to update the interiors at large. They wanted an elegant, sophisticated, and comfortable style that served their lives but also required a design that would preserve and enhance various existing details.
To begin, we focused on the timeless and most interesting aspects of the existing design. Details such as Spanish tile floors in the entry and kitchen were kept, as were the dining room's spirited marine-blue combed walls, which were refinished to add even more depth. A beloved lacquered linen coffee table was also incorporated into the great room's updated design.
To modernize the interior, we looked to the home's gorgeous water views, bringing in colors and textures that related to sand, sea, and sky. In the great room, for example, textured wall coverings, nubby linen, woven chairs, and a custom mosaic backsplash all refer to the natural colors and textures just outside. Likewise, a rose garden outside the master bedroom and study informed color selections there. We updated lighting and plumbing fixtures and added a mix of antique and new furnishings.
In the great room, seating and tables were specified to fit multiple configurations – the sofa can be moved to a window bay to maximize summer views, for example, but can easily be moved by the fireplace during chillier months.

We reconfigured the mudroom near the garage entry to add a full bathroom with a curb-less shower and other universal design features. This would allow the owners to be prepared when or if they require a first-floor living for aging-in-place. We installed a new laundry room next to this bathroom. The existing family room could easily be converted into a bedroom.

Comfortable elegance was the inspiration for this area as it would be one of the most used rooms in the house. It had to be easy to maintain, look great all the time, but be so comfortable and warm to relax in.
Custom Century sofas mirror each other with a Nanotex’d fabric (easily cleaned – water beads up on surface) with brown leather frames. His and her chairs and ottomans from Harden face the TV and were selected after sitting in hundreds of options.
The built-ins were designed by Accent cabinets to look more like pieces of furniture but also coordinate with the existing cabinetry throughout the home. They hide the TV components while also displaying some of the couple’s tokens from years of travel.
The wood trusses were added after seeing photos of beautiful great rooms on Houzz. The trusses accentuate the cathedral ceiling and add an element of rich stained wood to the space.

Our client's carport just wasn't cutting it in the Texas heat and winter cold. They wanted to have a new closed detached garage built in the same spot. While we're at it, they wanted have some extra storage space and a nice new driveway, too! We cleared away the old carport and started on the new garage addition. The brick on the outside of their house was painted gray, so we were easily able to match the garage. A walk through door was added for easy entry without having to open the large garage door. The garage didn't take yard away from their backyard and their landscaping still closes off the garage from the pool perfectly, as if it was always there!

The entire project included removal of an existing pergola, including the original support columns, and building a new patio cover which extends further and wider than the previous outdoor space. The new space adds more outdoor living area, plenty of shade and is easily accessible from three entrances into the home. The original space only provided covered accessibility to two of three interior doors that provide entry onto the patio. In order to build the design according to plan, removal of the entire rear brick facade of the home was necessary. We carefully rebuilt the entire back brick facade paying special attention to match the exterior to the original, we also constructed the new brick support columns using the same masonry color and style. These columns were then topped off with Western red cedar posts to blend with the beautiful cedar tongue & groove ceiling on the inside of the patio cover.

The client purchased a mature, small, NAPA Valley vineyard to be their home and for personal enjoyment.
Once they began converting their new "hobby" grapes into wine, they soon realized they needed a place to "age" their labors and a place to then enjoy them. They decided to design such a place within the confines of their home where they could entertain family and friends.
The structure was modified to allow storage of more than 200 individual bottles, cases, and magnum size bottles. A cask room was added as was a well-appointed tasting room. The storage area is separated from the tasting and social area by a tempered glass doors and windows. The space to be converted was a challenge. No surface was plumb or level, therefore, the remodel involved interior walls, new floors and ceilings.
Until these issues were addressed, the beautiful cabinet work, and a complete temperature and humidity control system to store, maintain, and enjoy the wine could not be started. The floors had to be floated out and chases with faux finishes provided for HVAC and electrical. Lighting in the tasting room is provided by a series of recessed and puck lights.
The bar/counter area is highlighted by a custom, Tiffany style chandelier. Enough space was left in front of the bar to accommodate two serving tables for food and snacks, with plenty of room to move about the space. Discreetly hidden behind the bar is a large capacity cooler that can chill several bottles at once.
The bar is capped with eight lineal feet of Calcutta Gold Marble and sports a brass foot rail. The bar has grape panels between Acanthus Corbels and the bottle storage cabinet areas are a unique blend of Acanthus overlays under precisely cut and mitered grape design crown molding over and around a cleverly designed bottle storage system.
Traffic flow is achieved through the multiple points of entry through any of three pairs of 6' custom double doors which, when weather permitting, can remain open while entertaining. The host and hostess can attend food and beverage service from behind and around the bar through a separate doorway.
The temperature controlled cask storage area is large enough for the clients' current needs, and can accommodate a larger number of casks should the need arise.
The floor and walls of the cask room are designed for easy maintenance.. Both rooms are delightfully decorated with earthen tone faux finishes on walls, ceilings and floors reminiscent of a nonspecific European wine making region.
This effect is extended to the soffits in the tasting room. A unique wine racking system is easily stored, providing even greater ability to maintain and move about the storage area.
