The classic schoolhouse light fixture has been an American icon for almost 90 years. This Pacific Palisades home was purchased new as a vacation home for our client and his family. He wanted the home to incorporate transitional elements with clean lines and a simple design. We addressed adding privacy without obstructing or minimizing ocean views but allowing privacy from neighbors. The family room features a transitional design with a neutral palette, that is both light and sophisticated. The chairs selected for this project are upholstered with comfortable wood edges and with tones that play off of both the light wood flooring and accented media wall. We incorporated a glass coffee table with rattan poles that were bundled and twisted together to mimic earthy elements that added depth and structure to the core of the living space. A light rug was placed underneath the furniture to bring warmth to the room and continue the monochromatic color scheme. Dark window edges opened up the entire room for focus to extend back and forth from a classy and comfortable interior to beautiful ocean views. Motorized window shades in a neutral color added privacy and shading for the setting sun and to easily raise for enjoying the ocean view.

This elegant salt water pool and outdoor entertaining area overlooks a golf course. The clients’ goals for the project were to: (1) have more privacy, (2) fit a traditional, geometric pool design into a smaller footprint, and (3) enhance their deck to function as an outdoor living space. Elite Landscaping owner and designer, Jason Decker, had worked with the clients on a variety of layouts and designs over the years. When the timing was right, the client selected a 15’ by 30’ main pool with a 9’ by 9’ sun shelf in one corner. Elite Landscaping added some in-pool wow factors, including: a slender set of all-glass tile steps descending from the sun shelf, and a raised, privacy wall with three, 24” wide sheer waterfalls on one side. Silver travertine was used for the bullnose coping and pool deck. The all-brick, poolside fire pit offers a great area to entertain and relax. The deck was rebuilt for beauty and safety, with a dry, underdeck system that creates office and/or dining space underneath. All outdoor lighting and pool lighting were professionally installed to be easily controlled from an app on the client’s smartphone.

The media console is filled with items of the owner's that she already had. We added a bit of metallic gold with the star there and a pop of blue with the pineapple. The white tray with gold handles on the coffee table continues the metallic sheen, which is a must to add right now to be on trend. Silver Koi fish swim in the tray on the coffee table for an unexpected surprise. These items are all fun and also inexpensive, so they can be changed easily in the future for a new trendy look without a lot of expense. I asked the owner to select some coffee table books for her tray that reflect her mood and energy to bring this into the room. What's her mood? It says right there on the covers, what she wanted this room to look and feel like --- Relaxed Coastal Style and Island Whimsy. I think we nailed it. :)

Children’s waiting room interior design project at Princeton University. I was beyond thrilled when contacted by a team of scientists ( psychologists and neurologists ) at Princeton University. This group of professors and graduate students from the Turk-Brown Laboratory are conducting research on the infant’s brain by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (or fMRI), to see how they learn, remember and think. My job was to turn a tiny 7’x10′ windowless study room into an inviting but not too “clinical” waiting room for the mothers or fathers and siblings of the babies being studied. We needed to ensure a comfortable place for parents to rock and feed their babies while waiting their turn to go back to the laboratory, as well as a place to change the babies if needed. We wanted to stock some shelves with good books and while the room looks complete, we’re still sourcing something interactive to mount to the wall to help entertain toddlers who want something more active than reading or building blocks. Since there are no windows, I wanted to bring the outdoors inside. Princeton University‘s colors are orange, gray and black and the history behind those colors is very interesting. It seems there are a lot of squirrels on campus and these colors were selected for the three colors of squirrels often seem scampering around the university grounds. The orange squirrels are now extinct, but the gray and black squirrels are abundant, as I found when touring the campus with my son on installation day. Therefore we wanted to reflect this history in the room and decided to paint silhouettes of squirrels in these three colors throughout the room. While the ceilings are 10′ high in this tiny room, they’re very drab and boring. Given that it’s a drop ceiling, we can’t paint it a fun color as I typically do in my nurseries and kids’ rooms. To distract from the ugly ceiling, I contacted My Custom Creation through their Etsy shop and commissioned them to create a custom butterfly mobile to suspend from the ceiling to create a swath of butterflies moving across the room. Their customer service was impeccable and the end product was exactly what we wanted! The flooring in the space was simply coated concrete so I decided to use Flor carpet tiles to give it warmth and a grass-like appeal. These tiles are super easy to install and can easily be removed without any residual on the floor. I’ll be using them more often for sure!
