This Boulder, Colorado remodel by fuentesdesign demonstrates the possibility of renewal in American suburbs, and Passive House design principles. Once an inefficient single story 1,000 square-foot ranch house with a forced air furnace, has been transformed into a two-story, solar powered 2500 square-foot three bedroom home ready for the next generation. The new design for the home is modern with a sustainable theme, incorporating a palette of natural materials including; reclaimed wood finishes, FSC-certified pine Zola windows and doors, and natural earth and lime plasters that soften the interior and crisp contemporary exterior with a flavor of the west. A Ninety-percent efficient energy recovery fresh air ventilation system provides constant filtered fresh air to every room. The existing interior brick was removed and replaced with insulation. The remaining heating and cooling loads are easily met with the highest degree of comfort via a mini-split heat pump, the peak heat load has been cut by a factor of 4, despite the house doubling in size. During the coldest part of the Colorado winter, a wood stove for ambiance and low carbon back up heat creates a special place in both the living and kitchen area, and upstairs loft. This ultra energy efficient home relies on extremely high levels of insulation, air-tight detailing and construction, and the implementation of high performance, custom made European windows and doors by Zola Windows. Zola’s ThermoPlus Clad line, which boasts R-11 triple glazing and is thermally broken with a layer of patented German Purenit®, was selected for the project. These windows also provide a seamless indoor/outdoor connection, with 9′ wide folding doors from the dining area and a matching 9′ wide custom countertop folding window that opens the kitchen up to a grassy court where mature trees provide shade and extend the living space during the summer months. The 20-year-old kitchen originally in this home was dark and segmented and was in dire need of a makeover to bring in the light. Overlooking the harbor, the space needed to reflect the view it held, and its small area was a challenge. However, Classic Kitchens & Interiors set to work taking down ceilings, removing columns and relocating rooms to create a series of fresh, bright and open spaces that includes a much larger kitchen with three islands, and a pass-through pantry. With water views all around, the homeowners selected Pescara inset with hidden dust rail in Nordic White for their perimeter cabinets, and Hale Blue for the center island for a beachy blue and white coastal theme. The cabinets feature decorative end panels with lock mitered corners, and the cabinetry crown is simple and understated to easily blend with the room base molding. The large center island countertop has embedded supports to allow a large overhang for oversized stools. The wet bar is designed with Chatham Recessed cabinetry in a high-gloss Hale Blue finish with the continuing marble countertop and brushed brass and glass shelving. Elegant living room photo in Los Angeles

In this laundry room we selected a stained wood plantation shutter for the window. We picked a stained color that would gives some contrast with the cabinetry and the wall color. We did a 3 1/2" hidden tilt louver so that they could easily open and close the louvers with the most visibility.

This sophisticated kitchen incorporates elements traditionally found in a Craftsman style space. The homeowner selected the AristoKraft Winstead doorstyle, which is a full overlay shaker available in Maple, in the Umber finish. Incorporating the dark, rich woods reinforces the Craftsman style and places an emphasis on the cabinet’s natural beauty. Maximizing storage while still making sure everything was easily accessible was the biggest concern. Adding several interior conveniences such as tip out trays in the sink base, garbage and recycle pullouts in the island, and roll out shelving below the cooktop helped immensely with accessibility. The customer also opted to include a tray divider cabinet for cookie sheets and spice pullouts. The designers were able to find the right color of AristoKraft cabinets by pulling woodsy brown hues from the perimeter and island countertops. When designing the island, having plenty of space for preparation was crucial. The original kitchen design started with a smaller island, approximately 54x48”. By the third revision, the island had grown to roughly 96 x 84”, including space for barstools on the back side and additional storage for wine below the overhang. The stainless steel appliances and hardware ties the space together and creates cohesiveness. Undercabinet lighting is highly functional and enhances the lush colors found in the cabinets and countertops. The exposed wood beam is an excellent design element. Not only does it compliment the rich cabinetry, it also adds a unique component found in most Craftman style kitchens. Additionally, the beam shows the location of the original exterior wall.

Inspiration for a timeless ceramic tile eat-in kitchen remodel in New York with a farmhouse sink, recessed-panel cabinets, white cabinets, marble countertops, gray backsplash, stone slab backsplash, stainless steel appliances and an island

Children’s waiting room interior design project at Princeton University. I was beyond thrilled when contacted by a team of scientists ( psychologists and neurologists ) at Princeton University. This group of professors and graduate students from the Turk-Brown Laboratory are conducting research on the infant’s brain by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (or fMRI), to see how they learn, remember and think. My job was to turn a tiny 7’x10′ windowless study room into an inviting but not too “clinical” waiting room for the mothers or fathers and siblings of the babies being studied. We needed to ensure a comfortable place for parents to rock and feed their babies while waiting their turn to go back to the laboratory, as well as a place to change the babies if needed. We wanted to stock some shelves with good books and while the room looks complete, we’re still sourcing something interactive to mount to the wall to help entertain toddlers who want something more active than reading or building blocks. Since there are no windows, I wanted to bring the outdoors inside. Princeton University‘s colors are orange, gray and black and the history behind those colors is very interesting. It seems there are a lot of squirrels on campus and these colors were selected for the three colors of squirrels often seem scampering around the university grounds. The orange squirrels are now extinct, but the gray and black squirrels are abundant, as I found when touring the campus with my son on installation day. Therefore we wanted to reflect this history in the room and decided to paint silhouettes of squirrels in these three colors throughout the room. While the ceilings are 10′ high in this tiny room, they’re very drab and boring. Given that it’s a drop ceiling, we can’t paint it a fun color as I typically do in my nurseries and kids’ rooms. To distract from the ugly ceiling, I contacted My Custom Creation through their Etsy shop and commissioned them to create a custom butterfly mobile to suspend from the ceiling to create a swath of butterflies moving across the room. Their customer service was impeccable and the end product was exactly what we wanted! The flooring in the space was simply coated concrete so I decided to use Flor carpet tiles to give it warmth and a grass-like appeal. These tiles are super easy to install and can easily be removed without any residual on the floor. I’ll be using them more often for sure!
