"Revival” implies a retread of an old idea—not our interests at Axis Mundi. So when renovating an 1840s Greek Revival brownstone, subversion was on our minds. The landmarked exterior remains unchanged, as does the residence’s unalterable 19-foot width. Inside, however, a pristine white space forms a backdrop for art by Warhol, Basquiat and Haring, as well as intriguing furnishings drawn from the continuum of modern design—pieces by Dalí and Gaudí, Patrick Naggar and Poltrona Frau, Armani and Versace. The architectural envelope references iconic 20th-century figures and genres: Jean Prouvé-like shutters in the kitchen, an industrial-chic bronze staircase and a ground-floor screen employing cast glass salvaged from Gio Ponti’s 1950s design for Alitalia’s Fifth Avenue showroom (paired with mercury mirror and set within a bronze grid). Unable to resist a bit of our usual wit, Greek allusions appear in a dining room fireplace that reimagines classicism in a contemporary fashion and lampshades that slyly recall the drapery of Greek sculpture. Two cabinet colors, too beautiful! This kitchen remodel in Long Beach, New York state, is both traditional and unexpected. Lori Kurn, a designer for Coastal Cabinet Works, skillfully employed green walls, cream accents, and dark cherry cabinets to create this beautiful kitchen. Lori specified Fieldstone Cabinetry's Bainbridge door style in Cherry finished in a color called Chestnut with Ebony glaze for the perimeter cabinets. This was an excellent choice to anchor the numerous subtle color transitions in this kitchen. The island is also the Bainbridge door style, this time in Maple finished in a color called Buttercream with Chocolate glaze. Stunning work Lori! Serving as a weekend getaway dwelling, these clients opted for a comfortable contemporary aesthetic. “Citified with a bit of glamour” was our mantra. To contrast the linear aspects of the great room and to provide both internal and external views, a large irregularly-shaped sectional was employed. It was paired with two iconic Mario Bellini lounge chairs that provide an elegant air to the space, all anchored by a 20’ round wool rug. A hint of European sensibility is revealed with the use of bespoke lighting. Multi-globe ceiling fixtures crown the great room, while individual pendants adorn the split dining table. The custom dining table top became a true piece of art: a laser-cut brass panel with a map of the client’s Northern California hometown speaks to his passion for maps and adds dimension and interest to this table. The entryway features a bronze, stainless steel, and wood console against a backdrop of precious stone. A bold bronze sculpture in the great room draws the eye to the glass and beyond. The walls and ceilings were given a faux finish of metallic woven, grass-cloth type texture, bringing an element of glamour and drama. In the master bedroom an art piece was commissioned to hang above the bed, blending a lifetime of poems, photographs, and song lyrics into a visual representation of a classic love story. Adjacent to this art piece is a full-size print of the client’s own photography work, backlit and custom-framed to add personality to a room full of exquisite art. When Booth Hansen’s client obtained seven acres of virgin forest on St. Joseph Island in Ontario, Canada, to build a retreat home, they intended to be good stewards of the land. They desired a series of cabins that were organized along the shoreline of Lake Huron but also which treaded lightly on the site. The design solution incorporated three black zinc clad volumes situated parallel to the water, sited to follow the natural contours of the land, and oriented to accentuate views to the surrounding area. Their dark color allows the cabins to recede into the shoreline forest, thereby intentionally diminishing the presence of the structures when viewed from the water. The cabins utilize a raised pier foundation, respecting the site by maintaining the natural topography, allowing snow melt and rainwater to drain naturally into the lake. Passive house insulation strategies were employed to allow optimal performance of the thermal envelope. Windows are aligned with one another to promote cross ventilation through the cabins as well as to frame specific views of the exterior from the inside. Operable windows located near the peak of each gabled volume allow for natural stack effect to remove heat from the cathedral ceiling volumes as well as to allow diffuse light to enter. For thermal comfort, radiant floor heating was utilized and geothermal loops were installed into the bottom of the lake to sustainably heat and cool the home. Custom zinc clad operable shutters are recessed into the walls on a concealed track to secure the building and protect the windows when it is not in use, but recede from view and provide additional insulation to the walls when open. Programming for this 4,500-square-foot group of cabins includes 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, powder room, great room, study/library and garage. A central living cabin holds the living and dining spaces and opens onto a waterfront deck. Glass bridge connectors on either side reach to two sleeping cabins. The study comprises floor to ceiling book shelves and a view across the water to the distant lighthouse, a structure that recalls fond childhood memories for our client, a well-known fiction writer. Deeper In the woods, a 1500 sf 2 level detached garage surprises and delights by housing a private dance studio on the second floor for our client’s wife, a famous flamenco dancer. Four sides of glass allow dancing among the treetops along with a view back to the water. While our clients were intrigued by the austere black zinc cladding for the exterior, on the inside of the home, a more whimsical aesthetic was desired. The earthy interior palette was pulled directly from the surrounding landscape. Jade green cabinets emulate the pine trees, while chocolate toned wood flooring recalls the forest floor. Furniture and personal items further propagate the idea of natural moments of color in the woods.

Making a house a home for this client who travels frequently on business. The goal was to create an inviting space for the home owner to relax and entertain friends when home in Calgary. Various strategies was employed to bring in warmth, lightness and create visual interest. A pale grey wool area rug was used to break up the large area of dark wood flooring. The dark stone fireplace surround was punctuated with white and reflective decorative accessories. A large round mirror was added to reflect the light and offer visual interest. The homeowner's once lonely grey sofa provided the perfect complement to the warm woods, textural wools and vibrant velvets.

At the heart of the home, a section of floor was removed at the top level to open up the existing stair and allow light from a new skylight to penetrate deep into the home. The stair itself received a new maple guardrail and planter, with a Fiddle-leaf fig tree growing up through the opening towards the skylight. On the top living level, an awkwardly located entrance to a full bathroom directly off the main stair was moved around the corner and out of the way by removing a little used tub from the bathroom, as well as an outdated heater in the back corner. This created a more discrete entrance to the existing, now half-bath, and opened up a space for a wall of pantry cabinets with built-in refrigerator, and an office nook at the rear of the house with a huge new awning window to let in light and air. Downstairs, the two existing bathrooms were reconfigured and recreated as dedicated master and kids baths. The kids bath uses yellow and white hexagonal Heath tile to create a pixelated celebration of color. The master bath, hidden behind a flush wall of walnut cabinetry, utilizes another Heath tile color to create a calming retreat. Throughout the home, walnut thin-ply cabinetry creates a strong contrast to the existing maple flooring, while the exposed blond edges of the material tie the two together. Rounded edges on integral pulls and door edges create pinstripe detailing that adds richness and a sense of playfulness to the design.
