Completed large-scale renovation, transforming a heritage church into a single-family home. Interior of the home featured upcycled, salvaged wood on stairs and beautiful kitchen tiling. Project included large-scale plumbing, HVAC, sewer and electrical upgrades, in addition to significant interior and exterior renovations. Project renovation provided training and employment opportunities for 65 crew members, resilient Torontonians building construction careers.

Completed in 2011 this 4 BR, 3 1/2 bath custom home is situated on a very tight urban infill lot in Northern, Virginia. Our clients were relocating to the D.C. area from New England and wanted to retain some of the New England vernacular they were familiar with in their new home. Due to heavy zoning restrictions, stylistic CCR's and a large program of almost 7000 sf, our design response is a modern take on a traditional hipped 4-square. We intentionally kept the skin and form of the building simple in order to contain cost and allow for a higher level of interior finish. The main level employs our favorite Great Room scheme that merges cooking, eating and entertaining into one seamless space that flows onto an expansive deck overlooking the rear yard. The entry elevation welcomes guests with a traditional front porch and stone path that passes by a small rain garden. The basement accommodates a guest room, media room, exercise area, and full shop while the upper level orients 2 kid's bedrooms, a Jack-n-Jill bath and the master suite toward a territorial view of the rear yard. All of this program is housed beneath a hipped roof that minimizes the scale of the house while presenting a thoughtful appearance toward the street and neighbors.

The red colour scheme employed in this interior design project exudes warmth and personality. The choice of Benjamin Moore 2007-10 Smouldering Red for the walls sets the tone for the entire space. These plain, simple , contemporary cabinets were made from a new material that comes from Europe. It's call a textured melamine and has a texture similar to corduroy. This particular color is called Palissendro and it comes in sheets that are approximately 81"X110". Some of the counters employ an effect called "Waterfall." Where the counter goes down to the floor on the ends. The long stainless handles lend a more contemporary, "high end" look to cabinets that are otherwise fairly inexpensive. There is also an application of free standing shelves in the kitchen that have many uses. Note how the grain flows vertically down a set of drawers. Could be horizontal just as well.

The master suite was the last remnant of 1980’s (?) design within this renovated Charlottesville home. The intent of Alloy's renovation was to incorporate universal design principles into the couple's bathroom while bringing the clean modern design aesthetic from the rest of the house into their master suite. After drastically altering the footprint of the existing bathroom to accommodate an occupant with compromised mobility, the architecture of this project, void of color, became a study in texture. To define the individual spaces of bathroom and to create a clean but not cold space, we used white tiles of various sizes, format, and material. In addition, the maple flooring that we installed in the bedroom was carried into the dry zones of the bathroom, while radiant heating was installed in the floors to create both physical and perceptual warmth throughout. This project also involved a closet expansion that employs a modular closet system, and the installation of a new vanity in the master bedroom. The remainder of the renovations in the bedroom include a large sliding glass door that opens to the adjoining deck, new flooring, and new light fixtures throughout. Andrea Hubbell Photography
