Located on a small infill lot in central Austin, this residence was designed to meet the needs of a growing family and an ambitious program. The program had to address challenging city and neighborhood restrictions while maintaining an open floor plan. The exterior materials are employed to define volumes and translate between the defined forms. This vocabulary continues visually inside the home. On this tight lot, it was important to openly connect the main living areas with the exterior, integrating the rear screened-in terrace with the backyard and pool. The Owner's Suite maintains privacy on the quieter corner of the lot. Natural light was an important factor in design. Glazing works in tandem with the deep overhangs to provide ambient lighting and allows for the most pleasing views. Natural materials and light, which were critical to the clients, help define the house to achieve a simplistic, clean demeanor in this historic neighborhood.

Perfectly settled in the shade of three majestic oak trees, this timeless homestead evokes a deep sense of belonging to the land. The Wilson Architects farmhouse design riffs on the agrarian history of the region while employing contemporary green technologies and methods. Honoring centuries-old artisan traditions and the rich local talent carrying those traditions today, the home is adorned with intricate handmade details including custom site-harvested millwork, forged iron hardware, and inventive stone masonry. Welcome family and guests comfortably in the detached garage apartment. Enjoy long range views of these ancient mountains with ample space, inside and out.
Bushman Dreyfus Architects
This private residence is modeled after the working Palladian villas of the 16th century. This new home is carefully tucked into an agrarian vineyard setting at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Specific technical and aesthetic details were the result of careful research–both in the library and on the ground in Italy. Walls are plastered in marmorino (a centuries-old technique that adds marble dust to the plaster mixture) and the floors are covered in terra cotta tiles imported from Italy. Ceilings are vaulted plaster or wood timbers. The exterior is a traditional plaster that incorporates crushed brick and stone that compliments the Vicenza stone detailing at the porches and around the doors and windows. Skilled craftsman from Venice and Salerno were employed for the terra cotta, architectural stone, carved stone, roman brick, interior marmorino plaster and exterior stucco work.

ZeroEnergy Design
ZeroEnergy Design (ZED) created this modern home for a progressive family in the desirable community of Lexington.
Thoughtful Land Connection. The residence is carefully sited on the infill lot so as to create privacy from the road and neighbors, while cultivating a side yard that captures the southern sun. The terraced grade rises to meet the house, allowing for it to maintain a structured connection with the ground while also sitting above the high water table. The elevated outdoor living space maintains a strong connection with the indoor living space, while the stepped edge ties it back to the true ground plane. Siting and outdoor connections were completed by ZED in collaboration with landscape designer Soren Deniord Design Studio.
Exterior Finishes and Solar. The exterior finish materials include a palette of shiplapped wood siding, through-colored fiber cement panels and stucco. A rooftop parapet hides the solar panels above, while a gutter and site drainage system directs rainwater into an irrigation cistern and dry wells that recharge the groundwater.
Cooking, Dining, Living. Inside, the kitchen, fabricated by Henrybuilt, is located between the indoor and outdoor dining areas. The expansive south-facing sliding door opens to seamlessly connect the spaces, using a retractable awning to provide shade during the summer while still admitting the warming winter sun. The indoor living space continues from the dining areas across to the sunken living area, with a view that returns again to the outside through the corner wall of glass.
Accessible Guest Suite. The design of the first level guest suite provides for both aging in place and guests who regularly visit for extended stays. The patio off the north side of the house affords guests their own private outdoor space, and privacy from the neighbor. Similarly, the second level master suite opens to an outdoor private roof deck.
Light and Access. The wide open interior stair with a glass panel rail leads from the top level down to the well insulated basement. The design of the basement, used as an away/play space, addresses the need for both natural light and easy access. In addition to the open stairwell, light is admitted to the north side of the area with a high performance, Passive House (PHI) certified skylight, covering a six by sixteen foot area. On the south side, a unique roof hatch set flush with the deck opens to reveal a glass door at the base of the stairwell which provides additional light and access from the deck above down to the play space.
Energy. Energy consumption is reduced by the high performance building envelope, high efficiency mechanical systems, and then offset with renewable energy. All windows and doors are made of high performance triple paned glass with thermally broken aluminum frames. The exterior wall assembly employs dense pack cellulose in the stud cavity, a continuous air barrier, and four inches exterior rigid foam insulation. The 10kW rooftop solar electric system provides clean energy production. The final air leakage testing yielded 0.6 ACH 50 - an extremely air tight house, a testament to the well-designed details, progress testing and quality construction. When compared to a new house built to code requirements, this home consumes only 19% of the energy.

This tiny bathroom remodel in Portland facilitates aging-in-place by tucking a fully functioning shower into a first floor bathroom. The 3' by 3' wet room also employs universal design features like a no-lip shower and a cleverly-placed toilet to allow seated bathing. Fixtures and shelving are placed in a corner to maximize elbow-room, and a sink and gray water cistern system integrated into the toilet conserves both water and space.

This project was for clients who we had worked with previously. A couple of years after we finished our first project with them - a remodel of their kitchen – these clients approached us again and asked us to design a weekend cabin for them in Eastern Washington. Located in the Wilson Ranch community of the Methow Valley, the area is a winter ski hub in Washington and a training ground for the US Nordic ski team. Our client skied collegiately for the University of Wisconsin and was attracted to this area for its miles of groomed trails and business networking opportunities. A lot of of Seattle’s newly minted wealth has weekend retreats in this valley and these folks dine at the same establishments on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Our solution for this cabin relies upon our favorite scheme – the Great Room concept. In this instance, the entire structure is anchored by a massive masonry fireplace and each room is strategically located to maximize the plan’s efficiency. Drawing upon the homestead history of this valley, we employed a rugged aesthetic that is reflective of the old west. In the Great Room itself, heavy timber trusses are utilized to great structural and aesthetic effect and contribute to the masculine theme. On a more contemporary note, the open floor plan flows seamlessly from space to space and the use of a window wall and high dormers introduce ample daylight throughout the interior. Typical of many of our structures, the exterior envelope is highly detailed while covered walkways provide shelter from the harsh winters in this region.

This stately french manor house was one of the last projects I designed during my employ at Henry Sprott Long & Associates. Located in my hometown of Florence Alabama, this house is sited on a prominent point in a protected cove of Lake Wilson along the Tennessee river. Since Florence is hosting its annual WC Handy music festival this weekend, we thought it appropriate to feature a home from the area.

This new house is designed around an immense decades-old Coastal Oak. The L-shaped plan frames the tree and creates a stepped volume by placing a taller volume in the rear, and a lower one in the front towards the street. The resulting courtyard functions both as an entry space and as a place for entertaining large groups. Although only 3000sf this house contains 3 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and 2 studies. The spaces of the rooms are composed to create a range of different spatial experiences. The two-story volume of the entry abuts the low horizontal space for the dining area, which in turn abuts an expansive living room. Many green building principals are employed throughout this structure including: passive cooling, FSC lumber, high-efficiency radiant heating, low carbon admixtures in the concrete floors and cellulose insulation. Although this project was started before the institution of the LEED rating system, it is the equivalent of a LEED Gold rating.
