Our clients, a couple in their early 40s with 3 young kids, bought their 1990s Colonial Revival style home about 8 years earlier and have been tackling updates to the home and property ever since. Both the husband and wife grew up on the Maine coast before settling permanently in New Hampshire, so their love of blues, grays, and a simple New England aesthetic came as no surprise. But while the wife longed for a few pops of color, the husband was definitely a little suspect of pattern and richer hues. We created a space that evoked both warmth and serenity, with a little bit of New England preppy style. We employed sky blue grasscloth, a traditional-with-a-twist lucite chandelier, and a fresh drapes + Roman shade combination for semi-formal style.

Lincoln Lighthill Architect employed several discrete updates that collectively transform this existing row house. At the heart of the home, a section of floor was removed at the top level to open up the existing stair and allow light from a new skylight to penetrate deep into the home. The stair itself received a new maple guardrail and planter, with a Fiddle-leaf fig tree growing up through the opening towards the skylight. On the top living level, an awkwardly located entrance to a full bathroom directly off the main stair was moved around the corner and out of the way by removing a little used tub from the bathroom, as well as an outdated heater in the back corner. This created a more discrete entrance to the existing, now half-bath, and opened up a space for a wall of pantry cabinets with built-in refrigerator, and an office nook at the rear of the house with a huge new awning window to let in light and air. Downstairs, the two existing bathrooms were reconfigured and recreated as dedicated master and kids baths. The kids bath uses yellow and white hexagonal Heath tile to create a pixelated celebration of color. The master bath, hidden behind a flush wall of walnut cabinetry, utilizes another Heath tile color to create a calming retreat. Throughout the home, walnut thin-ply cabinetry creates a strong contrast to the existing maple flooring, while the exposed blond edges of the material tie the two together. Rounded edges on integral pulls and door edges create pinstripe detailing that adds richness and a sense of playfulness to the design. This small community of 10 single family dwellings was designed to meet all 20 Imperatives of the Living Building Challenge. Energy efficient construction, lighting and appliances are combined with photovoltaic and solar thermal collectors to provide at least 105% of all power required by the residents. The form and density of dwellings are optimized to meet all potable water needs through an innovative rainwater collection, storage and filtration system. Graywater and onsite composting feed the permaculture-inspired landscape of community gardens and fruit trees, fostering a healthy sense of community and empowerment for the residents. The power, water, waste and urban agricultural elements are part of the site’s architectural expression, making the life-sustaining systems transparent to residents, neighbors and visitors. This reinforces the educational intent of Urban Grapevine as an integral part of a citywide network of sustainable community gardens.

Inspiration for a contemporary staircase remodel in Boston

The "Miss Hudson" project, completed in June 2025, involved the comprehensive interior design and styling of a two-story condo on Providence's historic West Side. The client’s design brief requested a feminine, chic, and highly livable space that harmoniously blended their South Asian heritage with their time living in New York City. The design maximized natural light, utilizing a palette of soft blushes, warm neutrals, and jewel tones. Light-reflective materials and varied textures were employed to amplify brightness and depth, successfully merging the client's heritage with a feminine sensibility. The kitchen and primary bathroom underwent full renovations (Contractor: Victor Duarte). The guest bathroom received a playful update with Schumacher wallpaper. The space was furnished with a curated mix of new custom pieces, cherished antiques, and the client's existing items. The meticulous attention to detail resulted in inviting, highly functional, and approachable environments.

The original design of this late Mid-century Modern house featured a horrifically ugly entry which the owners needed our help to fix. In addition, they wanted to add a master suite, create a home theatre, and remodel the family room. Although they originally considered adding a second floor, our final design resulted in an extension of the house which accentuated its existing linear quality. Our solution to the entry problem included cutting back part of the vaulted roof to allow more light in and adding a cantilevered canopy instead. A new entry bridge crosses a koi pond, and new clerestory windows, stone planters and cedar trim complete the makeover of the previously bland plywood-clad box. The new master suite features 12 foot ceilings, clerestory windows, 8 foot high French doors and a fireplace. The exterior of the addition employs the same pallet of materials as the new façade but with a carefully composed composition of form and proportion. This is the chandelier in full of the previous closeup photo. We produced this vibrantly colored outdoor chandelier for a client's roofed patio area. Do not be deceived by the thin wires; we use taut, aircraft-strength cables that keep the chandelier stable, secure and safe.

Ground up net-zero energy home featuring an 11kW solar array and mechanized windows. The building envelope was constructed using insulating concrete forms and structural insulated panels, resulting in an airtight structure ideal for maximizing thermal efficiency. A heat recovery ventilation system was installed to refresh the airtight, indoor environment. The home also employs an air source heat pump for heating and domestic hot water, which is distributed via an in-floor hydronic radiant heat system.

We began this project by tiling their existing patio with natural Rustica slate. A sand finish concrete extension to the patio was created to provide a new location for outdoor family dining. A pergola was designed to add shade and create a sense of enclosure to the dining area. Decorative cedar and steel screens were employed to create privacy to the spaces. Plantings included Clematis vines and Stella d Oro Daylilies.
