This Wallingford neighborhood remodel and addition focused on enhancing both the functionality and aesthetics of the existing home through a series of targeted updates and structural improvements. Central to the project was a full kitchen transformation, incorporating a completely new layout with modern finishes, fixtures, and appliances—designed to create a more efficient and visually appealing space. The new design also introduced a cozy sitting area adjacent to the kitchen, offering a comfortable spot for casual dining, conversation, or relaxation. To improve openness on the main floor, an existing structural post was removed and replaced with a concealed beam, resulting in a more seamless and connected layout that encourages natural flow between living spaces. On the upper level, a new dormer was added to extend the living space and accommodate a newly designed bathroom. All existing windows throughout the home were replaced to improve energy efficiency and refresh the home’s overall appearance.

For this backyard garden in the Briargrove neighborhood of Houston, TX, we wanted to create a whimsical and sustainable backyard retreat that incorporated the existing flagstone. The design is based on circles and abstract lines. We installed dwarf mondo grass between the flagstones and incorporated native plants throughout the design including Encore Azaleas, Japanese Yew, Foxtail Ferns, Zoysia Grass and Katie Ruellia. The fence has a diamond trellis adorned with Star Jasmine. Three water fountains made out of Mexican beach pebbles serve as a centerpiece, adding ambient noise and encouraging a sense of tranquility.

Working between an existing bulkhead and a covered patio off the back of the house, we incorporated various design elements to add plenty of "rooms" for the homeowners to entertain in. The linear pool features an elevated inset spa, with infinity edge. The pool deck, landing, and cabana floor are travertine. Brick stairs and walls match the existing brick from the property. A linear fire pit sits in a sunken gravel patio, to create a more intimate space and soften the feel of the hardscape surround. “The River District Cottage”, a neglected and run down 1930s home. Despite its unique challenges, our team created a beautifully renewed home and preserved its historic River District charm. As we studied the design of the cottage, we realized the need to start from the street inward, updating all of the utilities and mechanical systems in addition to preserving the original personality of this home. The interior traffic flow was considered, resulting in the decision to create additional square footage, as well as reorganize the existing space. Once the floor plan was set, the design details had to be worked through. A lot of attention was given to the exterior as well as the interior. We did not want to simply discard the old, but restore and complement it wherever possible. The home had a hint of the classic Florida Art Deco feel and we continued that theme, from custom baseboard and casing, clean line Italian cabinetry, and the strategic use of glass tile. In order to match the existing wood floors, heart pine flooring was brought in from Georgia, resulting in a richness flowing throughout the home. Energy efficient Kitchen Aid and Bosch appliances in the kitchen were set off by the stylish granite tops. Careful attention was given to delivering efficient air quality throughout this renovated home. In keeping consistent with the original design, plenty of energy efficient windows and doors were used to allow the blending of indoor and outside space, making the home light and airy feeling. We believe the unique challenges of giving new life to this classic home have been met, including “art walls” to encourage a new set of memories for the owner of this beautifully restored home.

Bridge to Living Room. We worked with a family of six to create a light-filled “tree house” on two levels entering across bridges from an existing drive, gardens, and walks privately nestled below the accessing street. The owner envisioned a residence that felt open, full of light, and captured connections between family and private spaces vertically and horizontally. The owners wanted egalitarian spaces to encourage peaceful cohabitation between three generations living in the home.

They also wanted to encourage their teenagers and friends to hang out at home - smart thinking! The hot tub and deck had to be designed around large existing conifers. The addition of the overhead structure provides visual interest as well as protecting the hot tub from sap and falling debris. This project illustrates skilled woodworking and a minimalist, textural plant palette. We created two separate patios - one for outdoor dining and one with a gas fire table, perfect for enticing teenagers and their friends! Lighting from FX Luminaire highlights the Japanese Maple and illuminates the stamped concrete pathways, creating a magical nighttime effect.

The existing floor, partitions, ceiling, and lighting were all demolished. They wanted an updated space that allowed for more flexibility between sections in the office. In order to create a flexible space, I designed accordion doors that were fitted for the meeting room spaces, and designed an open floor plan to encourage collaboration in the office. The accordion style doors and glass/steel mullion partitions were based off of the designs from the Anomaly Door Designs 2017. Goler Arts Park is an urban park adjacent to the Winston Salem Factory Lofts. Previously an asphalt parking lot beside the railroad tracks, it now features lush green lawns, landscaped berms, sweeps of ornamental grasses, perennials and evergreens. New site lighting, brick pavers, benches, trash receptacles and pet dispensers provide convenience for park patrons. A local artist painted a vibrant “city skyline” mural to enhance an existing retaining wall. In addition to all of these amenities, 8 on-street parallel parking spaces and a new concrete sidewalk were added to encourage public use.

The goal of the Bridle Path Residence was to create a modern take on the original 1950’s split level and leverage multi-functional spaces to minimize the required square footage and maximize daily use of each space. The result is a 2800 SF 3-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom residence with a detached 400 SF ADU. Both structures are the result of strategic additional square footage and a bold yet edited material palette. Conservative sleeping quarters are juxtaposed by spacious common living and entertaining areas. Thoughtfully placed windows allow light without sacrificing privacy. The homeowners wanted to maintain the outdoor space but add some breathing room to the interiors. The existing carport was used to add the bulk of the additional space while the footprint on the main house and ADU were extended as minimally as possible to reduce impervious impacts and maintain existing topography. Interior spaces are designed to encourage family time and push activity outside. The process was collaboration in its purest form between architect, client and contractor.

Set on a sloped site overlooking Seneca Lake, these one and two bedroom rental cottages are an alternative to the traditional campground experience. This rustic accommodation elevates the popular cabin experience by introducing some of the comforts of home not available with traditional camp sites. These designs were imagined as a hub for exploring other Finger Lake destinations, including the many local wineries and Watkins Glen State Park. The architecture and site are carefully crafted to maintain an intimate scale and are independent from parking areas with gradually sloping paths meandering through the large existing tree canopy to each private entry. Guests enjoy an extraordinary lake view, framed by mature oak trees that obscure the view of the structures from the water. Rain gardens and limited excavation minimize site disturbance while protecting the quality of the lake water, as well as maintain the existing site character. With sensitive architectural and site collaboration, this project has created a fully accessible escape destination nestled into a sliver of land. These lakefront cottages encourage the non-traditional campground visitor to take a step into the outdoor experience.
