The homeowners of this Mukilteo residence partnered with H2D Architecture + Design to transform their underutilized rear deck into a highly functional outdoor living environment. The existing deck was refinished and reconfigured to create a more useable area for gathering, seamlessly extending the interior living space to the outdoors. A Struxure pergola was introduced to provide adjustable shade and light filtration, allowing the space to adapt to changing weather and seasons. Beyond the deck, the design steps down to a thoughtfully composed concrete paver patio anchored by a custom round wood hot tub, creating a warm and tactile focal point. Surrounding this feature, a built-in bench establishes a zone for relaxation and socializing, while a fire pit adds both ambiance and year-round usability. A custom screen wall was integrated to provide privacy and subtle enclosure without sacrificing openness, helping to define the space while maintaining visual connections to the landscape. The combination of multi-level seating, integrated elements, and carefully considered materials results in a cohesive outdoor retreat that supports a variety of uses.

Blurring of the line between inside and out has been established throughout this home. Space is not determined by the enclosure but through the idea of space extending past perceived barriers into an expanded form of living indoors and out. Even in this harsh environment, one is able to enjoy this concept through the development of exterior courts which are designed to shade and protect. Reminiscent of the crevices found in our rock formations where one often finds an oasis of life in this environment.
DL featured product: DL custom rugs including sculpted Patagonian sheepskin, wool / silk custom graphics and champagne silk galaxy. Custom 11′ live-edge laurel slabwood bench, Trigo bronze smoked acrylic + crocodile embossed leather barstools, polished stainless steel outdoor Pantera bench, special commissioned steel sculpture, metallic leather True Love lounge chair, blackened steel + micro-slab console and fiberglass pool lounges.

The entry establishes the character of the loft from the moment one arrives. Repurposed vintage doors were adapted to the tall closet opening, preserving their aged patina and textured glass while giving practical storage a distinctive architectural presence.
A patchwork of patterned porcelain floor tiles brings rhythm and personality to the narrow space, reflecting the clients’ appreciation for colour, history and creative reuse. A handmade metal pendant, rustic wood bench and collected artwork complete the composition, balancing the loft’s urban setting with warmth and artistic character.

Our clients already had a cottage on Torch Lake that they loved to visit. It was a 1960s ranch that worked just fine for their needs. However, the lower level walkout became entirely unusable due to water issues. After purchasing the lot next door, they hired us to design a new cottage. Our first task was to situate the home in the center of the two parcels to maximize the view of the lake while also accommodating a yard area. Our second task was to take particular care to divert any future water issues. We took necessary precautions with design specifications to water proof properly, establish foundation and landscape drain tiles / stones, set the proper elevation of the home per ground water height and direct the water flow around the home from natural grade / drive. Our final task was to make appealing, comfortable, living spaces with future planning at the forefront. An example of this planning is placing a master suite on both the main level and the upper level. The ultimate goal of this home is for it to one day be at least a 3/4 of the year home and designed to be a multi-generational heirloom.

Existing boulders along the creek provide natural structure and help stabilize the bank. Newly planted native species have been added among the rocks, selected for their ability to thrive in riparian conditions and support ecological health. As these plants establish and grow, they will soften the rocky edges, attract pollinators, and add texture and seasonal interest to the restored landscape.

Another angle of the rear yard landscape project! Monetti Custom Homes finished the garage/cabana/outdoor kitchen & pergola and are in the process of installing the teak boardwalk. The stone couch, firepit & patio are completed so we are beginning to establish the layout for the next area.

This elegant house seems to have been designed to allow its owner to experience the beauty of light with a particular intensity.
The use of white emphasizes the interplay of forms and levels that has been established in the interior. Outside, a patio provide an idyllic setting for relaxing, reading, playing and above all enjoying the southern California weather.

When the large, established trees in this backyard landscape began to shade and then kill off the grass below, the homeowner knew it was time for a change. We replaced the sun-loving grass with low maintenance shade-loving groundcover and perennials such as ferns and leopard plants, created walk-able pathways and gave this busy family a serene stone patio on which to relax. The lovely pergola will offer even more shade in the summer months. This landscape filled with tough plants will fill in quickly so it will look lush, yet still be easy to care for. Growing healthy grass under large shade trees is never easy. However, we have many wonderful and beautiful solutions.
