Our goal on this project was to make the main floor of this lovely early 20th century home in a popular Vancouver neighborhood work for a growing family of four. We opened up the space, both literally and aesthetically, with windows and skylights, an efficient layout, some carefully selected furniture pieces and a soft colour palette that lends a light and playful feel to the space. Our clients can hardly believe that their once small, dark, uncomfortable main floor has become a bright, functional and beautiful space where they can now comfortably host friends and hang out as a family. When they first purchased the home, the owners didn't think they'd need to renovate. But with two growing girls, they eventually realized that the house didn't fully suit their needs. While cooking, they couldn't keep an eye on the children as they played in the living room on the other side of the house. We designed a 325 sf addition that expanded the kitchen and added a family room and powder room. Renovations were also made to the adjacent mudroom including plenty of built-in storage.

Our team helped a growing family transform their recent house purchase into a home they love. Working with architect Tom Downer of Downer Associates, we opened up a dark Cape filled with small rooms and heavy paneling to create a free-flowing, airy living space. The “new” home features a relocated and updated kitchen, additional baths, a master suite, mudroom and first floor laundry – all within the original footprint.

Penstemon heterophyllus 'Margarita Bop' (Blue Bedder) is a stunning blue-flowering California native. Mounding and low growing, blooms profusely in spring. Bees love it too.

Indeed, Marc Wiener successfully incorporate water features into the existing landscape. When considering color and texture he applied his extensive expertise on how plant material will eventually grow. Here we see low-lying evergreens and ground cover perennials in and around the stream and rock outcroppings which soften the large boulders, which he says would “otherwise stand out and detract from the overall intent of looking ‘natural.’”
Larger flowering plantings were installed behind the water feature to provide accenting and screening. On lower portions of the slope, the water feature was planted with flowers for cutting and small beds for annuals so the client could interact with the stream garden throughout the season.

This growing family in Queen Anne wanted to transform their one-car garage into a backyard cottage/DADU. The intention was to have family and friends stay over regularly, along with a separate space for them to retreat to while they both work from home. Eventually, this space may turn into an Airbnb, but for now, they are enjoying it as a home-away-from-home.
Originally used as a woodshop, we moved their machinery into a pre-built structure and started from the ground up to transform this garage into a backyard oasis. Because it’s a DADU, this involved back-and-forth with the city to ensure it was permitted for the Queen Anne area. After discussing the parameters, the first thing we created during the design phase was a 3D plan that included a parking space in the alley and a gated door that invites you into the unit.
After the plans were approved by our clients, we replaced the garage door with a giant sun-filled window, added built-in cabinetry across the walls for storage, and used high-quality, cool-toned materials throughout the kitchen and bathroom to match their aesthetic. To create a feeling of openness, we added a mirrored backsplash to the kitchen.
Other hidden features include hiding the electrical within cabinetry (located behind the door) to give it a seamless and inviting look.
