This is an example of a large modern shade backyard gravel landscaping in San Francisco with a fire pit and no cover for summer.

The view from the north exit into the private community gathering space. The pond is ephemeral and created by roof capture water. Once the pond is full, it overflows into the adjacent rain garden. There are three more rain gardens along the slope to gather overflow until any excess is sent to the city sewer.

Hawkeye Landscape Design We began this project with the idea of making a friendly entryway and social area under the Mulberry tree which provides much needed shade in this hot, mountainous area. The 'red fescue' meadow grass has a cooling effect and the agaves reduce the need for excess water and maintenance. The backyard has a covered dining area with a corner lounge and fireplace. The large barbecue offers a cantilevered counter for entertaining. The waterfall into the pool is surrounded with bamboo and plantings that emulate the hillside beyond the property. The permeable paving and mix of Vitex and Olive trees provide shade for smaller seating areas to enjoy the variety of succulents throughout the garden

The south elevation of the house is characterized by a thick wood overhang that protects the home from excessive heat in the summer. A large rounded window projects a circle of light throughout the living room, marking the passage of time and highlighting different details at every minute

Ornamental grasses, winter berry, and other perennials are planted to create a beautiful garden on top of an area where the rain gutters drain into. The resulting rain garden can withstand excessive water from heavy rains while looking good when the weather is drier.

The Landscape Plan -- The design challenges within the existing site context were many. The new courtyard had to 1) be deep enough to accomodate access to the new garage, 2) wide enough to access the old garage & its driveway, 3) provide enough space for guest parking, 4) to dovetail with the existing entry drive, while 5) not being excessively steep. A retaining wall (at right) frames the formal space at a tolerable 4' height.

The clients for this project wanted a home with a traditional feel that fit the local aesthetic, but with a contemporary flare. The gabled forms and materials call back, while the exaggerated knee-braces and large banks of windows lend a little modernity. With a northerly exposure towards the lake the design opens up to the view without having concerns about excessive solar gain. A personal touch was added by the client fabricating the brackets for the post and beam connections.

This rustic 2-story great room looks out onto Lake Champlain. The exposed structure creates interest, pattern, and rhythm in this fabulous New England "camp".
