Hired in conjunction with John Lum Architects, RBD collaborated in the redesign of this three bedroom, four bath home for an art savvy family of four in Noe Valley. RBD's key contributions include the design and decoration of the kitchen breakfast nook, fireplace, four bathrooms and reconfiguration of the existing master bathroom and downstairs guest room/family room. The reconfiguration of the master bathroom creates a more open layout while also featuring a custom danish modern hairpin leg vanity as its focal point. Downstairs, the guest room/family room, designed for an open, one-room concept, showcases custom built-in millwork for excellent TV watching and game storage. Finishing off the space architecturally, a custom built-in walnut entry bench and coat cabinet help modestly accentuate their secondary entry into the home given this is the family's main entrance. Working on an extremely tight budget, RBD mixed low and high end finishes and fixtures to achieve a high end overall look without breaking the bank. The P+M House is a new infill home for a family of four in Saskatoon’s Varsity View neighborhood. Constructed of daylight, natural wood, and human interaction, it strives to create a rich, family-focused environment that pulls nature and ever-changing sunlight into the heart of the house. Situated at the doorsteps of President Murray Park and the U of S campus, the home opens to the South, affronting an established street while allowing a row of towering American elms to provide natural shading and focus to the interior spaces. The house is divided into four program zones: public, private, parents, and kids. The internal organization is a direct result of a daylight management concept, where dark-craving spaces are condensed and allocated to areas with low-light access, while providing strategic separation between zones. Left behind as a result are airy, light-filled living spaces that offer internal / external views, space for family interaction, while taking maximum advantage of limited South and West light. The architecture begins with a main floor sectional shift that breaks the house into front & back, creating an internal topography that lets South light reach the back of the house. A trio of continuous, interlocking walls then give shape and order to the primary spaces, while openings in or between these walls extend the interior spaces into the yard and let daylight wash the heart of the house. The highly-insulated house is the result of a thoughtful process that sought to leverage the site’s severe environmental constraints (minimal southern exposure in an extreme cold climate, where temps reach 40 below) and turn them into opportunities. The house is composed of a 2800 sf main house, a 650 sf basement suite, and a 600 sf garage. Creating a beautiful but practical and low maintenance shopping environment is often a challenge for high-level street stores. Heavy foot traffic and passionate browsing means that a store’s interior needs to be able to withstand constant use whilst still attractive to customers. We were extremely excited when this high-end furniture store in Sarasota got in touch to ask us to apply our charm and expertise to its interior. The store’s owners wanted an interior which would reflect its high quality and unique branding.

“Remodel for the Neighbors” Judkins Park Project featured on “Renovation Nation” television show Description House lift and wholesale remodel of a structure that everyone called a teardown. This is one of four homes built in 1908, in an area where townhomes are on the march, and cottages on the way out. Challenge Everything in the house was ruined. On the outside the asbestos siding was crumbling, and the back addition was turning into a nurse log. There were rickety wooden stairs to get down to the back yard, disconnecting the main living space from the yard. Inside the kitchen floor was extremely weak and rainwater was sheeting down one wall. Inspiration We loved the history of the house and wanted to preserve the fabric of the neighborhood. There was great proportion to house. It had great structural bones with a box ceiling and beautiful inlaid floor. This was a move that you make from the heart, and it drove our decisions. Solution + Innovation We honored the spirit of the historic house, but added modern elements that fit the character, kept the relationship to the street, and the integrity to the other houses in the row. We lifted the house and built a full-height ICF insulated concrete form basement, then set it back down. We built an addition to achieve an interior staircase to connect the upstairs living space with the back yard which only added 8.5 feet in length to the house. We also created a hydronic heating system in the wood floor, making this a low load hydronic house. How is it sustainable? We didn’t tear down the house and instead made the best of what we had to work with. We recycled wood and used forest salvaged wood for the cabinets. We repurposed a laboratory sink as a bath tub, and made stairs out of Garfield High School bleachers that we salvaged from another project. The overall energy usage is exceptional. We skinned the outside with insulation before the new siding went back on. We added solar, best in class windows, and LED lighting throughout. The entire 2200 square foot house uses one 50-gallon water tank, and the house is heated with this one tank.

An extreme makeover turns an unassuming lanai deck into an outdoor oasis. These Bonita Bay homeowners loved the location of their home, but needed it to fit their current lifestyle. Because they love to entertain, they wanted to maximize their outdoor space—one that would accommodate a large family and lots of guests. Working with Progressive Design Build, Mike Spreckelmeier helped the homeowners formulate a list of ideas about what they wanted to achieve in the renovation; then, guided them through the process of planning their remodel. The renovation focused on reconfiguring the layout to extend the outdoor kitchen and living area—to include a new outdoor kitchen, dining area, sitting area and fireplace. Finishing details comprised a beautiful wood ceiling, cast stone accents, and porcelain tile. The lanai was also expanded to include a full size bocce ball court, which was fully encased in a beautiful custom colonnade and screen enclosure. With the extension of the outdoor space came a need to connect the living area to the existing pool and deck. The pool and spa were refinished; and a well thought-out low voltage remote-control relay system was installed for easy control of all of the outdoor and landscape lighting, ceiling fans, and hurricane shutters. This outdoor kitchen project turned out so well, the Bonita Bay homeowners hired Progressive Design Build to remodel the front of their home as well. To create much needed space, Progressive Design Build tore down an existing two-car garage and designed and built a brand new 2.5-car garage with a family suite above. The family suite included three bedrooms, two bathrooms, additional air conditioned storage, a beautiful custom made stair system, and a sitting area. Also part of the project scope, we enlarged a separate one-car garage to a two-car garage (totaling 4.5 garages), and build a 4,000 sq. ft. driveway, complete with landscape design and installation.

Inspiration for a modern home design remodel

RightArm teamed with Portland firm InSitu Architecture on this modern interpretation of a post-war Portland home. Located in the Concordia neighborhood of Northeast Portland, the Webster ADU takes as inspiration the main house on the site with its low profile and hipped roofline, but the similarities end there. The ADU is clad with a painted wood, open joint rain screen. Generous four-foot eaves provide protection at the NW and SE corners of the building. The interior is simple but well executed. The floor is polished concrete. Construction-grade fir plywood cabinets lend the space a rustic feel. The aluminum clad fir windows tie in with the cabinetry and the end-grain fir butcherblock counter. Floor to ceiling pocket doors separate the rooms. Colorful tile and paint add subdued interest to the kitchen and bath spaces Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the ADU is that which isn’t seen. The ADU is completely air sealed and extremely well insulated. An energy recovery ventilator provides constant fresh air, while simultaneously removing the old air.
