Van Auken Akins Architects LLC designed and facilitated the complete renovation of a home in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Areas of work include the living and dining spaces on the first floor, and bedrooms and baths on the second floor with new wall coverings, oriental rug selections, furniture selections and window treatments. The third floor was renovated to create a whimsical guest bedroom, bathroom, and laundry room. The upgrades to the baths included new plumbing fixtures, new cabinetry, countertops, lighting and floor tile. The renovation of the basement created an exercise room, wine cellar, recreation room, powder room, and laundry room in once unusable space. New ceilings, soffits, and lighting were installed throughout along with wallcoverings, wood paneling, carpeting and furniture.

The homeowner's brother is a custom cabinet maker who brought our ideas to life and then Landmark Remodeling installed them and facilitated the rest of our vision. Within the garage, we transformed spaces into a movie room, a powder room, and a tiki bar, complete with custom features like shelving and a gas fireplace. We also tackled flooring, doors, trim, and windows throughout the property, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic. Bathroom renovations included custom glass shower doors and unique design elements like cedar accents. Exterior improvements, such as door replacements and deck construction, were also part of our scope. This is the Master Bathroom. This floating panel has LED lights behind that create a glowing effect that really takes this design above the standard. The client wanted to create a wall that wasn't connect to the ceiling mid project so we came up with two chromed braces to really tie the home owners profession into the request. Electrical and water run through these braces to facilitate the design and the end result turned out great!

This kitchen was formally half its size with dark upper cabinets blocking natural light. We increased the size by 10 feet into the garden which it gave the opportunity for a compact working triangle in an expansive space. There is both a peninsula and an island. Exercise Gym with Yoga Area: A dedicated space for fitness activities that includes both a traditional exercise gym and a serene yoga area, encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle. 3. Coffee Station with Juice Bar: This inviting area is designed for relaxation and socialization, featuring a coffee station complemented by a juice bar to enhance outdoor entertaining. 4. Secluded Meditation Space: A tranquil retreat is included, featuring a soothing wall fountain, cold plunge, and sauna, all surrounded by lush tropical vegetation to create an oasis for relaxation and mindfulness. 5. Lush Tropical Vegetation: The landscaping incorporates a variety of tropical plants that enhance privacy, beautify the space, and contribute to the overall calming atmosphere of the outdoor environment. Project Goals: The main goals of the project were to: • Visualize the backyard renovation to gain approval from the homeowner’s association. • Facilitate collaboration with the contractor by providing detailed renderings. • Create an aesthetically appealing and functional outdoor living space that meets the lifestyle needs of the homeowners. The 3D renderings successfully encapsulated the vision for the backyard renovation, presenting a harmonious blend of design and functionality. An oversized modern glass entry door and sidelight by Jeld Wen transform the old dark entry way. Light slots through the stair wall add another light source. The custom aluminum laser-cut screen acts as a stair guard. The pool is complete with all the luxury extras, a generous 11’ x 20’ tanning shelf, an 8’ circular island spa, an automatic in-floor cleaning system, a diving board for the kids, plus two deep end swim out benches to facilitate repeat diving. The pool’s classic cathedral ends are accented with topiary urns to add dimension and texture.
