With a unique architectural element featuring two structural beams running crosswise through the kitchen, the cabinetry needed to work to enhance the detail. On the wish list was an impressive island with seating that could replace the large kitchen table. The kitchen was designed with 33” high custom wall cabinets of varying heights, to float unobtrusively below the beams. A window was removed in order to accommodate the new beautiful focal point; a custom designed stucco hood and cooking area with a decorative ledge niche. Skylights in the vaulted area produce ample light, allowing the sink to be relocated to the large center island. The cherry glazed island conceals two dishwashers, with a soft outer arc so that diners can see one another. An elegant dinette area was created to showcase glassware and store linens. With a matching wood top and a hidden TV, this beautiful furniture piece is in direct view from the living room area, making the kitchen, at a glance, as well appointed as the rest of the home. Softly distressed ivory cabinetry with a brown glaze lightened the originally dark kitchen, creating a roomy and cheerful space. Golden tumbled travertine and crackled glass details on the backsplash accentuate the dramatic “Grand Canyon” colors of the natural stone counter tops.

Inspiration for a coastal dark wood floor entryway remodel in Los Angeles with beige walls and a white front door

The client requested a kitchen that would not only provide a great space to cook and enjoy family meals but one that would fit in with her unique design sense. An avid collector of contemporary art, she wanted something unexpected in her 100-year-old home in both color and finishes but still providing a great layout with improved lighting, storage, and superior cooking abilities. The existing kitchen was in a closed off space trapped between the family room and the living. If you were in the kitchen, you were isolated from the rest of the house. Making the kitchen an integrated part of the home was a paramount request. Step one, remove the wall separating the kitchen from the other rooms in the home which allowed the new kitchen to become an integrated space instead of an isolation room for the cook. Next, we relocated the pantry access which was in the family room to the kitchen integrating a poorly used recess which had become a catch all area which did not provide any usable space for storage or working area. To add valuable function in the kitchen we began by capturing unused "cubbies", adding a walk-in pantry from the kitchen, increasing the storage lost to un-needed drop ceilings and bring light and design to the space with a new large awning window, improved lighting, and combining interesting finishes and colors to reflect the artistic attitude of the client. A bathroom located above the kitchen had been leaking into the plaster ceiling for several years. That along with knob and tube wiring, rotted beams and a brick wall from the back of the fireplace in the adjacent living room all needed to be brought to code. The walls, ceiling and floors in this 100+ year old home were completely out of level and the room’s foot print could not be increased. The choice of a Sub-Zero wolf product is a standard in my kitchen designs. The quality of the product, its manufacturing and commitment to food preservation is the reason I specify Sub Zero Wolf. For the cook top, the integrated line of the contemporary cooktop and the signature red knobs against the navy blue of the cabinets added to the design vibe of the kitchen. The cooking performance and the large continuous grate on the cooktop makes it an obvious choice for a cook looking for a great cook top with professional results in a more streamlined profile. We selected a Sharp microwave drawer for the island, an XO wine refrigerator, Bosch dishwasher and Kitchen Aid double convection wall ovens to round out the appliance package. A recess created by the fireplace was outfitted with a cabinet which now holds small appliances within easy reach of my very petite client. Natural maple accents were used inside all the wall cabinets and repeated on the front of the hood and for the sliding door appliance cabinet and the floating shelves. This allows a brighter interior for the painted cabinets instead of the traditional same interior as exterior finish choice. The was an amazing transformation from the old to the new. The final touches are the honey bronze hardware from Top Knobs, Mitzi pendants from Hudson Valley Lighting group, a fabulous faucet from Brizo. To eliminate the old freestanding bottled water cooler, we specified a matching water filter faucet.

This elegant dining room was painted a gray base coat on walls and ceiling. The ceiling was faux finished with a darker gray glaze and a silver metallic glaze. The walls were faux finished with the same glazes as the ceiling but with a Harlequin design.

This white-on-white kitchen design has a transitional style and incorporates beautiful clean lines. It features a Personal Paint Match finish on the Kitchen Island matched to Sherwin-Williams "Threshold Taupe" SW7501 and a mix of light tan paint and vibrant orange décor. These colors really pop out on the “white canvas” of this design. The designer chose a beautiful combination of white Dura Supreme cabinetry (in "Classic White" paint), white subway tile backsplash, white countertops, white trim, and a white sink. The built-in breakfast nook (L-shaped banquette bench seating) attached to the kitchen island was the perfect choice to give this kitchen seating for entertaining and a kitchen island that will still have free counter space while the homeowner entertains. This newly built Old Mission style home gave little in concessions in regards to historical accuracies. To create a usable space for the family, Obelisk Home provided finish work and furnishings but in needed to keep with the feeling of the home. The coffee tables bunched together allow flexibility and hard surfaces for the girls to play games on. New paint in historical sage, window treatments in crushed velvet with hand-forged rods, leather swivel chairs to allow “bird watching” and conversation, clean lined sofa, rug and classic carved chairs in a heavy tapestry to bring out the love of the American Indian style and tradition. In the living room, a modern aluminum chandelier suspends from a stenciled faux finish ceiling, which was preserved in the remodel. The walls are painted Sandy Hook Gray a tough walls flat latex with trim painted in White Dove a satin oil-based impervex enamel. The fireplace was overhauled by eliminating a dated mantle and inserting and adding a solid slab of Priscilla Fire marble and fire glass. A flat screen television and surround sound speakers are among some of the home’s technology updates. A modular sectional sofa with custom silk pillows anchors the low-profile living seating arrangement. A large cowhide hide is flanked by contemporary lounge chairs and tempered glass and iron tables. Existing built-ins were painted to showcase choice accessories.
