CHALLENGE: -Owners want easy to maintain (white) kitchen -Must also serve as a workspace & accommodate three laptops & separate personal files -Existing kitchen has odd, angled wall of cabinets due to configuration of stairs in foyer SOLUTION: -Expand space by removing wall between kitchen & dining room -Relocate dining room into (rarely used) study -Remove columns between kitchen & new dining -Enlarge walk-in pantry by squaring off angles in stair wall -Make pantry entry a camouflaged, surprising feature by creating doors out of cabinetry -Add natural illumination with 6’ picture window -Make ceiling one plane -Add calculated runways of recessed LED lights on dimmers -Lighting leads to dynamic marble back splash behind range on back wall -New double islands & ceiling-high cabinetry quadruple previous counter & storage space -9’ island with seating includes three workstations -Seating island offers under counter electronics charging ports & three shelves of storage per workstation in cabinets directly in front of stools -Behind stools, lower cabinetry provides one drawer & two pull-out shelves per workstation -7’ prep island services 48” paneled refrigerator & 48” gas range & includes 2nd sink, 2nd dishwasher & 2nd trash/recycling station -Wine/beverage chiller located opposite island sink -Both sink spigots are touch-less & are fed by whole-house water filtration system -Independent non-leaching faucet delivers purified, double-pass reverse osmosis drinking water -Exhaust fan for gas range is hidden inside bridge of upper cabinets -Flat, easy-to-clean, custom, stainless-steel plate frames exhaust fan -New built-in window seat in bay window increases seating for informal dining while reducing floor space needed for table and chairs -New configuration allows unobstructed windows & French doors to flood space with natural light & enhances views -Open the screened porch doors to circulate fresh air throughout the home

This kitchen was designed for a client who has a passion for cooking and baking, and spends a lot of time there. The original kitchen had a wall at the end of the left cabinets, separating it from an unused music room. After demoing the wall, the kitchen was expanded into this space and the dining room was moved into the new open plan kitchen. Two small spaced windows were turned into a new double window above a wide farmhouse sink, flooding the kitchen with light. Simple, modern pendants over islands, plus recessed and under cabinet lighting provide ample lighting. To achieve a clean, timeless look we paired white shaker style cabinets with a pop of the “new neutral”, blue, on two islands. The island closest to the stove and sink is the main workstation, with plenty of storage on one side and an overhang with seating (for hanging out while cooking or just eating) on the other. Thoughtfully designed features include a vertical cabinet to store sheet pans, and a mixer installed inside the cabinet that swings up when the door is opened - no lifting or bending required. The second island is also multi-use - serving as a versatile work space as well. Additional unique features include lit upper cabinets, and (one of our favorites) to the right of the range wall, under drawers, is a built-in step stool that can be pulled out to assist with reaching higher shelves. This kitchen went through a remarkable transformation to become highly functional, bright, beautiful and perfect for our client!

Inspiration for a contemporary entryway remodel in San Francisco with white walls

The Great Room features an energetic mix of colors and patterns. These combine with modern forms and ethnographic elements to create a crescendo to the day. Grouped with iconic Milo Baughman chairs, a sensuous white vintage Vladimir Kagan sofa pops against rich hues of copper and blue. Great craftsmanship brings this renovated kitchen to life. It was an honor to be invited to join the team by Prestige Residential Construction, the general contractor that had completed other work for these homeowners.

Our clients wanted to add an ensuite bathroom to their charming 1950’s Cape Cod, but they were reluctant to sacrifice the only closet in their owner’s suite. The hall bathroom they’d been sharing with their kids was also in need of an update so we took this into consideration during the design phase to come up with a creative new layout that would tick all their boxes. By relocating the hall bathroom, we were able to create an ensuite bathroom with a generous shower, double vanity, and plenty of space left over for a separate walk-in closet. We paired the classic look of marble with matte black fixtures to add a sophisticated, modern edge. The natural wood tones of the vanity and teak bench bring warmth to the space. A frosted glass pocket door to the walk-through closet provides privacy, but still allows light through. We gave our clients additional storage by building drawers into the Cape Cod’s eave space.

The island is a dark charcoal with cool undertones that coordinates with the cabinetry and transom work in both the neighboring mudroom and breakfast area. White subway tile, quartz countertops, white enamel pendants and gold fixtures complete the update. The ends of the island are shiplap material that is also used on the fireplace in the next room. In the new mudroom, we used a fun porcelain tile on the floor to get a pop of pattern, and walnut accents add some warmth. Each child has their own cubby, and there is a spot for shoes below a long bench. Open shelving with spots for baskets provides additional storage for the room. Complete bathroom remodel. this project was taken down to the studs. Custom design vanity with spa tower which incorporates a styling tools drawer, shallow makeup drawers and plenty of functional storage. To reduce waster space under the sink we made the cabinet below more shallow in order to have a drawer below which will optimize usable storage space.

These clients retained MMI to assist with a full renovation of the 1st floor following the Harvey Flood. With 4 feet of water in their home, we worked tirelessly to put the home back in working order. While Harvey served our city lemons, we took the opportunity to make lemonade. The kitchen was expanded to accommodate seating at the island and a butler's pantry. A lovely free-standing tub replaced the former Jacuzzi drop-in and the shower was enlarged to take advantage of the expansive master bathroom. Finally, the fireplace was extended to the two-story ceiling to accommodate the TV over the mantel. While we were able to salvage much of the existing slate flooring, the overall color scheme was updated to reflect current trends and a desire for a fresh look and feel. As with our other Harvey projects, our proudest moments were seeing the family move back in to their beautifully renovated home.
