Vignette Modern Roman Shades answered the request for something neutral and natural in look that complimented the kitchen cabinetry without fighting with the artwork.

Historical Renovation Objective: The homeowners asked us to join the project after partial demo and construction was in full swing. Their desire was to significantly enlarge and update the charming mid-century modern home to meet the needs of their joined families and frequent social gatherings. It was critical though that the expansion be seamless between old and new, where one feels as if the home “has always been this way”. Solution: We created spaces within rooms that allowed family to gather and socialize freely or allow for private conversations. As constant entertainers, the couple wanted easier access to their favorite wines than having to go to the basement cellar. A custom glass and stainless steel wine cellar was created where bottles seem to float in the space between the dining room and kitchen area. A nineteen foot long island dominates the great room as well as any social gathering where it is generally spread from end to end with food and surrounded by friends and family. Aside of the master suite, three oversized bedrooms each with a large en suite bath provide plenty of space for kids returning from college and frequent visits from friends and family. A neutral color palette was chosen throughout to bring warmth into the space but not fight with the clients’ collections of art, antique rugs and furnishings. Soaring ceiling, windows and huge sliding doors bring the naturalness of the large wooded lot inside while lots of natural wood and stone was used to further complement the outdoors and their love of nature. Outside, a large ground level fire-pit surrounded by comfortable chairs is another favorite gathering spot.

This project was such an incredible design opportunity, and instilled inspiration and excitement at every turn! Our amazing clients came to us with the challenge of converting their beloved family home into a welcoming haven for all members of the family. At the time that we met our clients, they were struggling with the difficult personal decision of the fate of the home. Their father/father-in-law had passed away and their mother/mother-in-law had recently been admitted into a nursing facility and was fighting Alzheimer’s. Resistant to loss of the home now that both parents were out of it, our clients purchased the home to keep in in the family. Despite their permanent home currently being in New Jersey, these clients dedicated themselves to keeping and revitalizing the house. We were moved by the story and became immediately passionate about bringing this dream to life. The home was built by the parents of our clients and was only ever owned by them, making this a truly special space to the family. Our goal was to revitalize the home and to bring new energy into every room without losing the special characteristics that were original to the home when it was built. In this way, we were able to develop a house that maintains its own unique personality while offering a space of welcoming neutrality for all members of the family to enjoy over time. The renovation touched every part of the home: the exterior, foyer, kitchen, living room, sun room, garage, six bedrooms, three bathrooms, the laundry room, and everything in between. The focus was to develop a style that carried consistently from space to space, but allowed for unique expression in the small details in every room. Starting at the entry, we renovated the front door and entry point to offer more presence and to bring more of the mid-century vibe to the home’s exterior. We integrated a new modern front door, cedar shingle accents, new exterior paint, and gorgeous contemporary house numbers that really allow the home to stand out. Just inside the entry, we renovated the foyer to create a playful entry point worthy of attention. Cement look tile adorns the foyer floor, and we’ve added new lighting and upgraded the entry coat storage. Upon entering the home, one will immediately be captivated by the stunning kitchen just off the entry. We transformed this space in just about every way. While the footprint of the home ultimately remained almost identical, the aesthetics were completely turned on their head. We re-worked the kitchen to maximize storage and to create an informal dining area that is great for casual hosting or morning coffee. We removed the entry to the garage that was once in the informal dining, and created a peninsula in its place that offers a unique division between the kitchen/informal dining and the formal dining and living areas. The simple light warm light gray cabinetry offers a bit of traditional elegance, along with the marble backsplash and quartz countertops. We extended the original wood flooring into the kitchen and stained all floors to match for a warmth that truly resonates through all spaces. We upgraded appliances, added lighting everywhere, and finished the space with some gorgeous mid century furniture pieces. In the formal dining and living room, we really focused on maintaining the original marble fireplace as a focal point. We cleaned the marble, repaired the mortar, and refinished the original fireplace screen to give a new sleek look in black. We then integrated a new gas insert for modern heating and painted the upper portion in a rich navy blue; an accent that is carried through the home consistently as a nod to our client’s love of the color. The former entry into the old covered porch is now an elegant glass door leading to a stunning finished sunroom. This room was completely upgraded as well. We wrapped the entire space in cozy white shiplap to keep a casual feel with brightness. We tiled the floor with large format concrete look tile, and painted the old brick fireplace a bright white. We installed a new gas burning unit, and integrated transitional style lighting to bring warmth and elegance into the space. The new black-frame windows are adorned with decorative shades that feature hand-sketched bird prints, and we’ve created a dedicated garden-ware “nook” for our client who loves to work in the yard. The far end of this space is completed with two oversized chaise loungers and overhead lights…the most perfect little reading nook! Just off the dining room, we created an entirely new space to the home: a mudroom. The clients lacked this space and desperately needed a landing spot upon entering the home from the garage. We uniquely planned existing space in the garage to utilize for this purpose, and were able to create a small but functional entry point without losing the ability to park cars in the garage. This new space features cement-look tile, gorgeous deep brown cabinetry, and plenty of storage for all the small items one might need to store while moving in and out of the home. The remainder of the upstairs level includes massive renovations to the guest hall bathroom and guest bedroom, upstairs master bed/bath suite, and a third bedroom that we converted into a home office for the client. Some of the largest transformations were made in the basement, where unfinished space and lack of light were converted into gloriously lit, cozy, finished spaces. Our first task was to convert the massive basement living room into the new master bedroom for our clients. We removed existing built-ins, created an entirely new walk-in closet, painted the old brick fireplace, installed a new gas unit, added carpet, introduced new lighting, replaced windows, and upgraded every part of the aesthetic appearance. One of the most incredible features of this space is the custom double sliding barn door made by a Denver artisan. This space is truly a retreat for our clients! We also completely transformed the laundry room, back storage room, basement master bathroom, and two bedrooms. This home’s massive scope and ever-evolving challenges were thrilling and exciting to work with, and the result is absolutely amazing. At the end of the day, this home offers a look and feel that the clients love. Above all, though, the clients feel the spirit of their family home and have a welcoming environment for all members of the family to enjoy for years to come.

This is a home that uses space to create peace. Let’s start with the 3.5 baths. Think how many fights won’t happen over who gets to take a shower first. Now look at your luxurious master suite. The motivation for this bathroom remodel came from a broken pipe under the foundation that had to be repaired. The owner decided that having a Carrera marble adorned bathroom would wrap her guests in the ultimate luxury. With a design by Mary Cates, ASID, we took this bathroom down to the studs and started fresh. We enlarged the shower and put in a hand shower so it is now big enough for 2! We put in a stylish freestanding tub in the corner and added another sink to the vanity. We took out extra cabinets that made the space feel cramped and bulky. The bath now is open and bright with the light color of the marble and light wall tones. The clear shower glass wrapped on 2 sides has this shower feeling large and spacious. The Ammara plumbing fixtures from Nob Hill Decorative Hardware create a divine finishing touch. Bath hardware and mirrors from Mary Cates & Co in Dallas make this bath feel one of a kind. The homeowner confessed that she found her bathroom depressing. She lived in an outdated 1980s space that turned her morning routine into a chore rather than a moment of self-care. After fifteen years in the house, she was finally ready to invest in herself. What she was looking for was classic elegance with a touch of personality, something timeless that wouldn’t feel outdated in five years. And that’s precisely what we delivered. The renovation required stripping everything down, even the studs. Opening up the walls, we discovered outdated plumbing that needed complete replacement: copper pipes and new drainage systems installed to current standards. We also installed appropriate waterproofing membranes, essential for long-lasting durability, especially in the shower area. The design focuses on soft gray tones that feel calming rather than cold. The custom double vanity, with its elegant gray cabinetry and white quartz countertop, offers both beauty and functionality; Finally, no more fighting over mirror space in the mornings. Those chrome sconces flanking the mirrors add a touch of glamour while providing excellent lighting. The true star of the design is the patterned tile. The homeowner was worried it would be “too busy,” but our designer was certain—and she was right—that it would bring the gray to life. We convinced her to try it, and it became the bathroom’s defining feature: a beautiful geometric pattern in black, white, and gray that adds character without overwhelming the space. The combination of a bathtub and shower behind frameless glass creates a sense of spaciousness and light, with classic white subway tiles that never go out of style. Three windows flood the space with natural light, a luxury in any bathroom. The end result is a space of calm, relaxation, and beauty. That’s the kind of transformation that gives meaning to our work.

The existing cabinets were all repainted and new hardware and pulls were added to all. We replaced the old microwave and also installed a new sink. A Caesarstone countertop was added, as well as a mosaic backsplash. The plumbing was also changed out and a new faucet was installed. The old fighting fixture was taken down, and recessed can lights were installed along the galley.

Prior to the remodel this home was 100% original and left to age while the homeowner moved on. Our clients are the second homeowner to the home, and we helped to keep the original feeling of the home as well as worked to reuse the original St. Charles steel cabinets where possible. The clients found a second steel cabinet Kitchen out of state with taller upper cabinets than the original and with a lift of the original soffit we were able to combine the original and additional cabinets to create a wonderful and more functional Kitchen. Each cabinet was relocated, painted, and reinstalled. It's hard to imagine that the Kitchen previously featured terra cotta painted cabinets with a pink countertop and backsplash 4x4 tile. The lighting, windows, and many other design details are still original throughout the home. Additions, renovations, and restorations on established Boston-suburb streets. Winchester is where a lot of my Boston-area work has lived for years. The town has a residential character built on early 20th-century stock: Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Shingle style, the occasional Federal, on tree-lined streets where what you do to one house is visible to the rest of the block. The projects below are additions, renovations, and restorations. The brief is almost always the same: keep what's working, fix what isn't, and make the new work look like it belongs to the original house. Done well, an addition is invisible from the street and the family lives in a house that looks like it was always that way. Done poorly, the work announces itself, and the house ends up reading as two houses: the original, and the one the architect tried to add. When a project falls under Winchester's Historic Districts Commission, I work closely with the commission. When it doesn't, I still pay attention to the neighbors. The town has a strong sense of its own architectural fabric. The work that lasts here is the work that doesn't fight it.
