Our client has a large collection of bonsai trees and wanted an exhibition space for the extensive collection and a workshop to tend to the growing plants. Together we came up with a plan for a beautiful garden with plenty of space and a water feature. The design also included a Japanese-influenced pavilion in the middle of the garden. The pavilion is comprised of three separate rooms. The first room is features a tokonoma, a small recessed space to display art. The second, and largest room, provides an open area for display. The room can be accessed by large glass folding doors and has plenty of natural light filtering through the skylights above. The third room is a workspace with tool storage. Our clients—philanthropists that split time between Chicago and Naples—embraced a rare opportunity to buy an adjacent unit and experience full-floor city living. With a vision for both intimate and large gatherings and minimal maintenance, we developed simple architectural details that organize the primary living spaces and integrate mechanical, lighting and structural elements. Their growing art collection is set against classic oak paneling, travertine and oak flooring and white lacquer finishes. Seeded glass and metal doors filter natural light into the center of the apartment and reflect city and lake views. The result is an understated yet inviting home.

Stairs descend to the pool area, with bluestone paving and space to sunbathe or relax in the shade.

Double islands give flexibility for cooking work space as well as "art" space for a family's young children. The counter top was stain and glue resistant and still elegant. This counter is Silestone. The selected the Cygnus in the suede finish for the two islands and the Helux for the surrounding counter tops. Storage is important, so a large pantry was incorporated as well as a mud room for coats and accessories. A bar area was also created for parties along with a wine refrigerator, plenty of glass storage and a double pull-out trash can. Filling a large great room is always a challenge. I used two large matching sofas and designed a large cocktail table to service both sofas. The table was made by Seth Woods. The sofa fabric is contract grade to be child and pet friendly. The rug is polypropylene and very stain resistant as well. The window treatments are sheer lined with sheer to filter the light and frame the window nicely. The sofa table is a custom design. We wanted to bring a metal finish into the room and we wanted to place the 2 storage benches under it to conceal toys. The arched stretcher in the design allows for that. This was fabricated by Small Axe Forge and Daylight Cabinetry. We used neutral tones and textures to keep the room calm and serene. The red accents were brought in to add warmth and depth.
