Our clients were making a big move from the West Coast and wanted the new home to be ready in time for the start of the new school year, so Studioteka’s architecture and interior design team rolled up our sleeves and got to work! Construction documents were prepared for the coop board and NYC Department of Buildings approval and our team coordinated the renovation. The entire unit had new hardwood flooring, moldings, and doors installed, the stairs were gently refinished, and we took down a wall separating the living room from a small den on the lower level, making the living space much more open, light-filled, and inviting. The hot water heater was tucked away in an unused space under the stair landing, allowing for the creation of a new kitchen pantry with additional storage. We gut-renovated the upstairs bathroom, creating a built-in shower niche as well as a brand new Duravit tub, Mirabelle high-efficiency toilet, American Standard matte black fixtures, and a white Strasser Woodenworks vanity with black hardware. Classic white subway tile lines the walls and shower enclosure, while black and white basketweave tile is used on the floor. The matte black towel hooks, toilet roll holder, and towel rod contrast with the white wall tile, and a shower curtain with a delicate black and white pattern completes the room. Finally, new mid-century modern furnishings were combined with existing pieces to create an apartment that is both a joy to come home to and a warm, inviting urban oasis for this family of four.

This massive 7-figure project in Martis Camp (Truckee, California) began in April of 2106 when Jon invited a few members of the Throughstone Group to fly there and walk through the site to see what ideas they could collectively form for the client from a "blank slate". A theme was then proposed; a rough plan was approved; and phase one site preparation began that same Fall. It's a one-of-a-kind collaboration involving every member of the Throughstone Group from Colorado, California, Washington and Italy. Phase two began in May of 2017 and finished six months later in November. The final phase will be complete in the early summer of 2018. Jon's stonesmith travel team relocated to Truckee for six months and installed approximately 300 tons of basalt and granite stone. The SB Forge + Iron crew designed and built numerous bronze-plated and bronze-sculpted features. The Seattle Solstice team co-designed and built Jon's sculptures up in Seattle, transported them to the site and flew down to install them. Jay of Stellar Jay Designs built all of the wood works in Durango, Colorado and trucked them up himself to put them all in place. Craig and Mary from NW Outdoor Lighting will complete the lighting system in 2018.

The attached dwelling unit (ADU) above the couple’s garage was a great space, but not as multi-functional as needed. Heinrich wanted to be able to work from there as a home office and as such needed a dedicated space without removing its use as a guest suite. The bed on the floor kept them from being able to use the space to its full capacity and as an open unit, some kind of structure to the open plan was necessary. McAdams Remodeling & Design’s Lead Carpenter, Chris, built a loft area using a rough sketch that Heinrich had done of his ideal sleep space that would house a bed they’d found in Europe. The couple sourced a metal ladder they liked while we worked the overall loft design using vertical grain fir above the windows into the existing vaulted ceiling. The underneath area of the loft featured knotty pine tongue-in-groove paneling that served as a beautiful ceiling for Heinrich’s work space – perfect for daily use. Finally, the loft area was stained with a mocha finish to match the nearby bookshelf and other trim. The finished product is a fully functional ADU that’s comfortable for Heinrich’s daily use as well as occasional visits from friends and family.

My clients had always been inspired by the grand Tudor Revival homes of the early 20th century and commissioned Hull Historical to recreate the authentic custom millwork, paneling and doors for their new Tudor Revival home. Our inspiration came from 2 great English homes, Stan Hywett, a great Tudor Revival home in Ohio, built for the founder of Goodyear Tires. Also, the Woodbine Mansion, built in 1911 for the son of the Pabst Brewing Company. We were fortunate to purchase three rooms of architectural millwork from the woodbine home, which was originally fabricated by the Huber Company of New York. Upon completion of this project, the architectural salvage comprised 15% of the final quantity of paneling installed. The remainder was custom fabricated by Hull Historical at our shop in Fort Worth, TX and installed at the clients home. The commission, based on historic precedent, constituted antique paneling on the main floor, beamed ceilings and all the doors in the home. The new paneling, including the kitchen cabinetry is made from a combination of new quarter-sawn white oak and antique white oak salvaged from old barns and buildings. All the oak was fumed in an ammonia-filled chamber to produce a cocoa color and deep feel giving the millwork rough character and a timeless look that my client loved. The millwork also served to give the home a hierarchy, with simple paneling combined with board and batten doors downstairs, then more ornate paneling, with carvings on the main floor. Additionally, the main floor features mostly 8 and 10 panel doors. All woodwork was hand-pegged with oak pegs. Some of the paneling features a unique Mason’s Miter, a historic joinery technique inspired from stone work. For this paver patio project, we used Belgard’s Dimensions 18 new paver in Napoli color. The patio is roughly 700 sq ft. Belgard’s Melville wall block was used to build the raised planter and outdoor kitchen. We added Belgard’s Moduline paver to elevate the area by adding design to the circle. This residential home uses the Quarry Mill's Cambrian Creek thin stone veneer to complement the grill and pool area. Cambrian Creek is a classic real stone veneer cut into the dimensional (sawn-height) style. The stone is natural dolomitic limestone with the timeless colors of gold, buff and the occasional grey. The quarrying and production process for Cambrian Creek is quite impressive. The stone is cut from the ground in blocks roughly the size of a car. Then, the blocks get sawn or sliced as it is called into large sheets of stone in heights of 2.25”, 5” and 7.75”. The sheets are fed into the splitter where the hydraulic press breaks them every four inches. At this stage, the stone is considered building stone or full veneer. Finally, the pieces are run through the saw to create the beautiful thin veneer.

Madison real thin stone veneer from the Quarry Mill adds elegance to the exterior of this beautiful residential home. Madison natural thin stone veneer is a classic choice for a rustic limestone. The stone is a rough-cut split face limestone in shades of grey, buff/cream, and tan. Although Madison is an ashlar style stone, the individual pieces are inconsistent in terms of their shapes. Some ashlar stones are naturally very straight and strip-like, whereas Madison could almost resemble a fieldledge style. As is often the case in years past and for whatever reason many homeowners covered their decorative Victorian hallway tiles in a variety of products from carpet to laminate flooring. These days the trend has reversed and quite rightly many homeowners now realise the value a tiled floor can bring to a property and look to us to have it restored. Our client had purchased a property in Norfolk seaport of Kings Lynn and, on lifting the dirty old carpet and decaying underlay in the hallway, discovered a beautiful tiled entrance hall. It was obvious that a previous owner had decided to lay carpet over the tiles as an easy way of hiding the result of careless renovation and decorating which had resulted in a thick coating of plaster, paint, carpet tape glue and various other contaminants which had become firmly stuck to the surface. There were also two small rectangular black and brown tiles missing behind the front door which had been damaged during the removal of some old lead pipes. This was clearly a job which would need somewhat more than a scrubbing brush and a bottle of Flash! Our first job was to remove as much of the solid contaminants as possible by hand with floor scrapers and a steamer which softened the more stubborn lumps. We then applied Tile Doctor Remove & Go which is a powerful alkaline stripper to the whole area, left it to dwell on the surface for twenty minutes and then scrubbed it in using a rotary machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad. The resulting slurry was then power rinsed and extracted away using our Ninja machine which is a high-power industrial vacuum. Any remaining patches where the carpet tape had been stuck down were spot treated using Tile Doctor Nanotech HBU which made short work of the hardened glue. The result was a clean floor, but the surface still felt slightly rough and pitted, a problem which we resolved using the rotary machine fitted with a 200-grit diamond burnishing pad followed by a 400-grit pad with a little 400 grit honing powder which left the surface smooth, silky and ready for the application of a sealer. Finally, we acid washed the whole area using Tile Doctor Acid Gel, a slow release product which would neutralise any remaining chemicals, improve new sealer adhesion and inhibit the future production of any efflorescence salts. We had used a fair amount of water during the cleaning process, so we left the floor to dry off thoroughly overnight with assistance from our commercial dehumidifier. On our return the following day, we discussed the sealer options with the client and recommended using microporous Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is an impregnating sealer that seeps into the pores of the stone protecting it from within. It will provide an excellent fluid resistant seal whilst enhancing the natural colours in the stone, additionally it’s fully breathable thereby enabling any moisture trapped under the floor to rise through the floor and evaporate. This is important on old floors like this where no damp-proof membrane was installed. The sealer was applied with a paint pad in tow coats and allowed to dry for an hour before buffing the floor with a hog’s hair pad to give a rich natural-look sheen finish. The Victorian tiles responded well to the treatments which were completed in two consecutive days. My client was extremely pleased with the results and left the following comment: “My floor was in poor condition after being buried under carpet as well as many, many years of paint and muck. I enjoyed the time they spent at my home and wouldn’t hesitate to use (or recommend) the Tile Doctor service in the future.” Nick White Norfolk Tile Doctor

Our client's goal for this project was to update the kitchen without replacing the flooring and the cabinets. For a low cost but new look, we chose to refinish the cabinets. We used a glazing technique that completely transformed the look and feel of the cabinets. These great looking cabinets were further complemented by a gorgeous Saturnia Gold granite countertop. Unlike most granite, Saturnia Gold has a leathered finish. To compliment this finish, we chose a chiseled rough edge that makes all the difference. We also installed a new backsplash that is subtle but oh so elegant. We further made things sparkle with LED under cabinet lights. Finally, we installed all new stainless steel appliances. This was a very cost effective kitchen makeover that really enhanced our client's home.
