The Aerius - Modern American Craftsman on Acreage in Ridgefield Washington by Cascade West Development Inc.
Welcome to the Aerius. Don’t let the Northwest inspired appearance fool you. As you step inside; the interwoven transitional, modern and contemporary elements make personal solitude, friendly gatherings, and extended family stays simultaneously conceivable. The thoughtful division of rooms and amenities insure space for each member of the household to act independently or to come together as a whole and share in the quiet sophistication of the common areas. The family that lives here values independence as well as inclusion. Functionality and freedom are the principles of this nest; from which a family can take flight.
At first glance this home seems to disappear into it’s surroundings. The dark, natural appearance of the rock borrows hues and rough texture from the surrounding forest. A soft, powder blue paint gives no clear chromatic indication between structure and sky. With this in mind the dark shingles seem to float above a stoney foundation. Unexpected levitation isn’t the only aerial endeavor this home embarks upon. With lofty interiors and dismissible separation from the outdoors; people, air and conversation can flow freely throughout the combined space. Overall the home echoes the popular American Craftsman style, which dots the Pacific Northwest landscape. This home’s many peaks; supported by visible gables and lower exterior masonry denote common treatments found throughout Clark County. However, within the championed modern features of this home, touches of originality can still be found. From the driveway to the dining room, the design guides the viewer through the home while maintaining a comfortable and creative atmosphere.

The bathroom was redesigned to improve flow and add functional storage with a modern aesthetic.
Natural walnut cabinetry brings warmth balanced by the subtle movement in the warm gray floor and wall tiles and the white quartz counters and shower surround. We created half walls framing the shower topped with quartz and glass treated for easy maintenance. The angled wall and extra square footage in the water closet were eliminated for a larger vanity.
Floating vanities make the space feel larger and fit the modern aesthetic. The tall pullout storage at her vanity is one-sided to prevent items falling out the back and features shelves with acrylic sides for full product visibility.
We removed the tub deck and bump-out walls with inset shelves for improved flow and wall space for towels.
Now the freestanding tub anchors the middle of the room while allowing easy access to the windows that were blocked by the previous built-in.

We were asked by a house builder to build a steel staircase as the centrepiece for their new show home in Auckland. Although they had already decided on the central mono-stringer style staircase (also known as a floating staircase), with solid oak treads and glass balustrades, when we met with them we also made some suggestions. This was in order to help nest the stairs in their desired location, which included having to change the layout to avoid clashing with the existing structure.
The stairs lead from a reception area up to a bedroom, so one of our first suggestions, was to have the glass balustrade on the side of the staircase finishing, and finish at the underside of the ground-floor ceiling, and then building an independent balustrade in the bedroom. The intention behind this was to give some separation between the living and sleeping areas, whilst maximising the full width of the opening for the stairs. Additionally, this also helps hide the staircase from inside the bedroom, as you don’t see the balustrade coming up from the floor below.
We also recommended the glass on the first floor was face fixed directly to the boundary beam, and the fixings covered with a painted fascia panel. This was in order to avoid using a large floor fixed glazing channel or reduce the opening width with stand-off pin fixings.

The floor transition in a wet room is one of the more technically demanding aspects of the build. The penny tile inside the wet room needs to be sloped correctly without that slope being visible to the eye, which requires careful mud bed work before a single tile is set. The marble or marble-look threshold where the wet room floor meets the main bathroom floor defines the two zones cleanly without a physical barrier. The large format marble tile carrying through the rest of the bathroom is visible here as well, showing how the two flooring materials were planned to complement each other from the beginning rather than selected independently.
