The Master Bedroom continues the theme of cool and warm, this time using all whites and neutrals and mixing in even more natural elements like seagrass, rattan, and greenery. The showstopper is the stained wood ceiling with an intricate yet modern geometric pattern. The master has retractable glass doors separating it and its private lanai.

White built-ins and traditional wallpaper chosen by the architect is counterpoint to rustic elements. Earthy and elemental materials are selected for the home that reference the barn without directly mimicking it. Wooden members found inside the barn and from other barns bridge ceilings and are used in floors along with rustic slate adding to a sense of simplicity to the farmhouse design.

In the dining room we installed 3-D wall tiles that mimic the shapes found on the tracery ceiling in the adjacent family room. We used a lighter shade of blue from the music room so as not to overpower the deep tone in the music room beyond. A crystal light fixture adds that sparkle the clients love.

This project features “found space” within the existing house. The original two story family room was too tall and out of scale with adjoining spaces, allowed noise from both floors to travel throughout the house, and was hard to heat and cool comfortably. Closing in and adding a second floor to the family room created two “new rooms”: an intimate and well scaled family room on the first floor, featuring a coffered ceiling, columns and built ins to create a level of detail missing from the original room; and a children’s play room on the second floor, which retains the slightly domed ceiling and octagon shape of the original family room to create a fun place for the children to play adjacent to their bedrooms.
