Nestled in the heart of the Laurelhurst neighborhood of Seattle, this charming home has been completed updated. Our clients desired a design that is fresh, understated and family friendly. The original kitchen was crowded and disconnected from other parts of the home. Our focus was to open up the spaces while maintaining the home’s integratory. The kitchen is now the center of the home with a large island for gathering. We selected classic finishes with modern touches throughout each space, thus providing a fresh look. Simple and smart furnishings were selected. We layered texture, color and scale with textiles and art to offer clean, uncluttered design lines that our clients wanted.

The kitchen needed to be lightened and brightened. Out with the dark mid-toned brown wood cabinets and in with freshly painted white cabinets. I transformed the counter area by having an all neutral backsplash for a clean and revived base. I added modern pendant lighting over the island and light wooden Hickory stools decorated with orange accents which gave it a fresh updated look. The owner is a lover of nature and animals, so I wanted to create a casual dining area with a modern twist especially since the space looks out onto the beautifully landscaped backyard. It was a natural choice for the owner to select art featuring two large aviaries filled with a colorful palette of birds, as she has a parrot of her own. Placing an elliptical Julian Chichester table and bright orange Design Within Reach chairs with a whimsical chandelier and vibrant patterned drapes gave the dining area a cheerfully updated look without spending a fortune.

Understated clean lines come together with rustic accents inspired by historic rural homes. Using simple Middleton flat panel doors throughout allows the three finishes to take center stage. Shiplap is a key element of Farmhouse styling—add texture and detail to your design with a shiplap panel, now available in strips as well as prearranged panels for hoods, bookcases, end panels and more. Enhance a center island with a geometric x-end. Paired with shiplap, it adds to a classic Farmhouse look.
