Rear Facade Photo. "Business in the Front, Party in the Back." This project provided Mark with the opportunity to revisit a project from the first year of his practice. Our clients were the third owners since Mark first worked on this house in 1987. The original project had consisted of a small addition to the rear of an existing single-story (over garage) house. The new owners wanted to completely remodel the house and add two floors. In addition they wanted it to be MODERN. This was a perfect fit for where the firm had evolved to over the years, but the neighbors weren't having it. The neighbors were very organized and didn’t like the idea of a large modern structure in what was a mostly traditional block. We were able to work with the neighbors to agree to a design that was Craftsman on the front and modern on the interior and rear. Because of this dichotomy, we sometimes refer to this as the "Mullet House". We were able to minimize the apparent height of the facade by hiding the top floor behind a dormered roof. Unique features of this house include a stunning roof deck with glass guardrails, a custom stair with a zigzag edge and a guardrail composed of vertical stainless steel tubes and an asymmetrical fireplace composition. The front of this townhouse was boring and obscured by overgrown bushes. We replaced the siding and shutters, installed a new front door, etched and stained the boring concrete step, added a curving brick walkway, built a lattice shield to hide the trash can, redesigned the landscaping and added a river birch.

One of the first projects at our house was to tear down the existing detached garage, which was right alongside the house, occupying too much of the only yard space we had. We designed a new two and one half car garage in the Arts and Crafts style, closer to the street, and we built rustic steps coming down into our front yard. We built the rustic stone walls to manage the 5' grade change from the front yard to the garage level. A custom rustic iron railing provides safety, without taking away from the natural appearance. This classic cable rail was fabricated out of steel in sections at our facility. Each section was welded together on-site and painted with a flat black urethane. The cable was run through the posts in each section and then tensioned to the correct specifications. The simplicity of this rail gives an un-obstructed view of the beautiful surrounding valley and mountains. The front steps grab rail was measured and laid out onsite, and was bolted into place on the rock steps. The clear-cut grabrails inside for the basement stairs were formed and mounted to the wall. Overall, this beautiful home nestled in the heart of the Wyoming Mountains is one for the books.
