The existing U-shaped kitchen was tucked away in a small corner while the dining table was swimming in a room much too large for its size. The client’s needs and the architecture of the home made it apparent that the perfect design solution for the home was to swap the spaces. The homeowners entertain frequently and wanted the new layout to accommodate a lot of counter seating, a bar/buffet for serving hors d’oeuvres, an island with prep sink, and all new appliances. They had a strong preference that the hood be a focal point and wanted to go beyond a typical white color scheme even though they wanted white cabinets. While moving the kitchen to the dining space gave us a generous amount of real estate to work with, two of the exterior walls are occupied with full-height glass creating a challenge how best to fulfill their wish list. We used one available wall for the needed tall appliances, taking advantage of its height to create the hood as a focal point. We opted for both a peninsula and island instead of one large island in order to maximize the seating requirements and create a barrier when entertaining so guests do not flow directly into the work area of the kitchen. This also made it possible to add a second sink as requested. Lastly, the peninsula sets up a well-defined path to the new dining room without feeling like you are walking through the kitchen. We used the remaining fourth wall for the bar/buffet. Black cabinetry adds strong contrast in several areas of the new kitchen. Wire mesh wall cabinet doors at the bar and gold accents on the hardware, light fixtures, faucets and furniture add further drama to the concept. The focal point is definitely the black hood, looking both dramatic and cohesive at the same time.

Converting the old family room to something practical required a lot of attention to the need of storage space and creation on nooks and functioning built-in cabinets. Everything was custom made to fit the clients need. A hidden slide in full height cabinet was design and built to house the stackable washer and dryer. The most enjoyable part was recreating the new red oak floor with grooves and pegs that will match the existing 60 years old flooring in the main house.

In the kitchen, new Shaker style cabinets in a soft gray finish are complemented by quartz countertops with subtle Calacatta Gold veining. We increased functionality by using full overlay cabinets with soft-close doors and full-extension drawers; we added useful accessories such as roll-outs, tray dividers and a trash/recycling center. The new undermount stainless steel sink is a stylish upgrade from the old enameled drop-in sink and the full height textured subway tile is a huge improvement over the old four inch high laminate backsplash. The kitchen pantry received new shelving and the adjacent laundry/utility room even got a facelift with luxury vinyl tile flooring and new paint.

Designed by Akram Aljahmi of Reico Kitchen & Bath in King of Prussia, PA in collaboration with Property Remodeling Group, this transitional inspired kitchen design features white and grey finishes complemented by a bold splash of blue tile. The kitchen design features Merillat Classic kitchen cabinets in Portrait door style with 5 piece drawer head in 2 finishes. The wall cabinets features a painted white Cotton finish and the base cabinets feature a painted grey Graphite finish. Kitchen countertops are engineered quartz in the color Carrera Marmi from Q by MSI. The kitchen also features a stunning blue herringbone tile back splash with 3x10 tiles. According to the client, "Akram solved a fundamental function problem that I could not see a solution for. His re-imagining of how the main floor of our home could function was a dramatic shift that I can't wait to experience as part of day-to-day life. The large multi-function kitchen is the centre of daily life in the home. We've used two banks of full-height cabinetry to conceal a host of complex infrastructure and storage areas, so that what's visible is distilled down to three simple elements - two perimeter cabinets and an island. The back wall of the kitchen separates the front foyer from the private spaces in the home. The dining room is located just beyond, within easy access of the butler's pantry that's concealed behind the cabinet unit visible on the left of this photo.
