Elegant l-shaped dark wood floor kitchen photo in San Francisco with an undermount sink, shaker cabinets, white cabinets, white backsplash and stainless steel appliances

The clients, a young professional couple had lived with this bathroom in their townhome for 6 years. They finally could not take it any longer. The designer was tasked with turning this ugly duckling into a beautiful swan without relocating walls, doors, fittings, or fixtures in this principal bathroom. The client wish list included, better storage, improved lighting, replacing the tub with a shower, and creating a sparkling personality for this uninspired space using any color way except white. The designer began the transformation with the wall tile. Large format rectangular tiles were installed floor to ceiling on the vanity wall and continued behind the toilet and into the shower. The soft variation in tile pattern is very soothing and added to the Zen feeling of the room. One partner is an avid gardener and wanted to bring natural colors into the space. The same tile is used on the floor in a matte finish for slip resistance and in a 2” mosaic of the same tile is used on the shower floor. A lighted tile recess was created across the entire back wall of the shower beautifully illuminating the wall. Recycled glass tiles used in the niche represent the color and shape of leaves. A single glass panel was used in place of a traditional shower door. Continuing the serene colorway of the bath, natural rift cut white oak was chosen for the vanity and the floating shelves above the toilet. A white quartz for the countertop, has a small reflective pattern like the polished chrome of the fittings and hardware. Natural curved shapes are repeated in the arch of the faucet, the hardware, the front of the toilet and shower column. The rectangular shape of the tile is repeated in the drawer fronts of the cabinets, the sink, the medicine cabinet, and the floating shelves. The shower column was selected to maintain the simple lines of the fittings while providing a temperature, pressure balance shower experience with a multi-function main shower head and handheld head. The dual flush toilet and low flow shower are a water saving consideration. The floating shelves provide decorative and functional storage. The asymmetric design of the medicine cabinet allows for a full view in the mirror with the added function of a tri view mirror when open. Built in LED lighting is controllable from 2500K to 4000K. The interior of the medicine cabinet is also mirrored and electrified to keep the countertop clear of necessities. Additional lighting is provided with recessed LED fixtures for the vanity area as well as in the shower. A motion sensor light installed under the vanity illuminates the room with a soft glow at night. The transformation is now complete. No longer an ugly duckling and source of unhappiness, the new bathroom provides a much-needed respite from the couples’ busy lives. It has created a retreat to recharge and replenish, two very important components of wellness.

The minimalist kitchen is always a winner. The kitchen features Skyros gold marble countertops with flat polished edges. To keep the look simple, the sample marble slab was used as a full height splash. To complete the look Suber wire brush wood looking porcelain was selected.

Designed and built by Terramor Homes in Raleigh, NC. In continuing the retreat feel, the goal in the master bath was to achieve a spa like feel. Inspired to incorporate the spa together with the tone of the rest of the home, the main focal element was a gorgeous free standing oval tub centered in the room under the vault of the ceiling and an 8 foot tall and 5 foot wide casement window that overlooks the river and greenway area behind the home. Directly across, the 6 foot by 6 foot full glass and glass tile was located- sharing the view out of the large windows. Flanking the tub are the adult height cabinets with large square legs and a shelf underneath, similar to the spa look that is expected. A full height cabinet pantry was added to encourage storage or rolled towels, bathing accessories and additional storage as well. The entire room was finished with a chocolate brown, 18” x 12” tile, laid in a brick pattern and continued up the walls for the consistent and clean look. Centered in the vault, a large, linen drum pendant with chrome trim drops- bringing elegance to the space. Small shelves were built at the bottom of each side of the vaulted ceiling to house the LED lighting that shines up the vaults of the ceiling, again replicating natural day light at any time of day. The raised panel, French blue cabinets are finished with a dark brown glazing. These are full overlay doors and drawers, constructed with high precision to maintain a 1/8” gap between every side of a door and drawer. Using Carrera marble subway tiles on the backsplash enhanced the Kashmir White granite on countertops. For the backsplash, marble tiles and listellos were carefully designed to create an arched top niche that mirrors the shape of the range hood opening and it doubles a space for storing spices and oils. This modern farmhouse kitchen features a beautiful combination of Navy Blue painted and gray stained Hickory cabinets that’s sure to be an eye-catcher. Beneath the counter a drawer and a set of roll-out shelves in various heights provides more easy access storage for pantry items, misc. baking accessories, rolling pins, mixing bowls, and more. The kitchen island provides a large worktop, seating for 3-4 guests, and even more storage! The back of the island includes an appliance lift cabinet used for a sewing machine for the homeowner’s beloved hobby, a deep drawer built for organizing a full collection of dishware, a waste recycling bin, and more! The refined kitchen palette works with the home’s rich furnishings to highlight the homeowner’s art collection. Rift cut white oak floors run continuously from the main living space into the kitchen, visually connecting it to the rest of the home. Inside the elegant kitchen, a Caesarstone-lined work area is recessed into a floor-to-ceiling wall of glossy white cabinetry. The Calacatta marble-style quartz wraps the counter, walls and soffit to create a sculptural element which features a sleek range hood, floating shelves, and pot lights. The quartz surface carries over to the island. Walnut base cabinets add depth and rich wood tone to the space. Hanging above, a cluster of glass globe pendant lights with bronze hardware adds a playful touch to the sophisticated space. The length of the island was designed to ensure use of the prep sink would not splash onto the Globe and Mail during breakfast! Adjacent to the island, the pantry houses small appliances and glassware, and also screens the dish washing area from the living room. The north wall with full-height, sliding glass doors extends the interior living space out onto the backyard terrace for barbequing, entertaining and enjoyment of the quiet, trellis enclosed garden.
