A hip young family moving from Boston tackled an enormous makeover of an antique colonial revival home in downtown Larchmont. The kitchen area was quite spacious but benefitted from a small bump out for a banquette and additional windows. Navy blue island and tall cabinetry matched to Benjamin Moore’s Van Deusen blue is balanced by crisp white (Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace) cabinetry on the perimeter. The mid-century inspired suspended fireplace adds warmth and style to the kitchen. A tile covered range hood blends the ventilation into the walls. Brushed brass hardware by Lewis Dolan in a contemporary T-bar shape offer clean lines in a warm metallic tone.
White Marble countertops on the perimeter are balanced by white quartz composite on the island. Kitchen design and custom cabinetry by Studio Dearborn. Countertops by Rye Marble. Refrigerator--Subzero; Range—Viking French door oven--Viking. Dacor Wine Station. Dishwashers—Bosch. Ventilation—Best. Hardware—Lewis Dolan. Lighting—Rejuvenation. Sink--Franke. Stools—Soho Concept. This historic colonial in Scarsdale, NY was home in the 1930s and 40s to the world famous Walter Winchell, gossip commentator, who loved to refer to getting divorced as “RENO-VATED”, (based upon the use of Reno, Nevada as the go-to for quickie divorces.) The home underwent a 2 year gut “reno-vation” which preserved the exterior but vastly changed the layout of the interiors. The oldest section dated to the early 19th century; the rest was added in the 1920s. The telephone lines that snaked through the walls were comparable to a large office building—presumably installed for Winchell, who wanted to be in constant contact with the outside world. The upstairs featured an outdoor play area, to protect his children from kidnappers. Cabinetry by Studio Dearborn/Schrocks of Walnut Creek in Rockport Gray; Bluestar range; custom hood; Quartzmaster engineered quartz countertops; Rejuvenation Pendants; Waterstone faucet; Equipe subway tile; Foundryman hardware. The challenge with this project was to transform a very traditional house into something more modern and suited to the lifestyle of a young couple just starting a new family. We achieved this by lightening the overall color palette with soft grays and neutrals. Then we replaced the traditional dark colored wood and tile flooring with lighter wide plank hardwood and stone floors. Next we redesigned the kitchen into a more workable open plan and used top of the line professional level appliances and light pigmented oil stained oak cabinetry. Finally we painted the heavily carved stained wood moldings and library and den cabinetry with a fresh coat of soft pale light reflecting gloss paint.

This outdated Mid Century ranch built in late 1950’s was in serious need of an update. Our clients wanted a fresh contemporary feel that was simple in design and reflected the original Mid Century feel of the home.
The new frosted Plexiglas railing allows the now open staircase and modern pendant to become part of the small dining area. White painted cabinetry with slab doors and minimal pulls add a lighter component and balance out the dark walnut cabinetry. The (3) built-in charging drawers, Legrand retractable outlets and a single door hood that opens with a light touch add a "cool" functional vibe to the space.,
Gray quartz countertops and a rectilinear white tile backsplash add serenity and tie in the stainless appliances giving the kitchen a modern feel.
A wood waterfall countertop detail on the back of the island adds interest to the space and is anchored by the unique handblown wave glass pendants in a soft grey color.
The new exposed support is both dramatic and functional in that it hides a support post in open bookcase cabinet.

This kitchen is a prime example of beautifully designed functionality. From the spacious maple butcher block island & eating bar to the roll-up pass through window for outdoor entertaining, the space can handle whatever situation the owners throw at it. The Espresso stain on these Medallion cabinets of Cherry wood really anchors the whimsy of the yellow bar stools and the ginger-tone checkerboard Marmoleum floor. Cabinets designed and installed by Allen's Fine Woodworking Cabinetry and Design, Hood River, OR.
