This 1960s home was in original condition and badly in need of some functional and cosmetic updates. We opened up the great room into an open concept space, converted the half bathroom downstairs into a full bath, and updated finishes all throughout with finishes that felt period-appropriate and reflective of the owner's Asian heritage.

The new porch was insulated and incorporated into the overall space. The kitchen remodel was part of a whole house remodel so new quarter sawn oak flooring, a vaulted ceiling, windows and skylights were added. A large calcutta marble topped island takes center stage. It houses a 5’ galley workstation - a sink that provides a convenient spot for prepping, serving, entertaining and clean up. A 36” induction cooktop is located directly across from the island for easy access. Two appliance garages on either side of the cooktop house small appliances that are used on a daily basis. Honeycomb tile by Ann Sacks and open shelving along the cooktop wall add an interesting focal point to the room. Antique mirrored glass faces the storage unit housing dry goods and a beverage center. “I chose details for the space that had a bit of a mid-century vibe that would work well with what was originally a 1950s ranch. Along the way a previous owner added a 2nd floor making it more of a Cape Cod style home, a few eclectic details felt appropriate”, adds Klimala. The wall opposite the cooktop houses a full size fridge, freezer, double oven, coffee machine and microwave. “There is a lot of functionality going on along that wall”, adds Klimala. A small pull out countertop below the coffee machine provides a spot for hot items coming out of the ovens. The rooms creamy cabinetry is accented by quartersawn white oak at the island and wrapped ceiling beam. The golden tones are repeated in the antique brass light fixtures. “This is the second kitchen I’ve had the opportunity to design for myself. My taste has gotten a little less traditional over the years, and although I’m still a traditionalist at heart, I had some fun with this kitchen and took some chances. The kitchen is super functional, easy to keep clean and has lots of storage to tuck things away when I’m done using them. The casual dining room is fabulous and is proving to be a great spot to linger after dinner. Renovation of this remarkable 1936 Monte Copper Tudor demonstrates how we sensitively transform historic homes to beautifully perform in contemporary life. The challenge was to connect first floor spaces, including the kitchen; dining room; and a lower family room added in a previous addition. The family room received thoughtful and appropriate detailing along with a graceful and functional two-sided bar element linking it with the kitchen. The kitchen was expanded and reimagined with a seamless addition. Diagonal views and openings allow all the rooms to function as a connected whole.

The Inspiration for this master bathroom remodel was the homeowners' desire for improved functionality of this small bath and updated design and products befitting the English Cottage style home. The goals for this projects were: 1. Redesign the bath to accommodate a more functional floor plan, better accessibility and storage. 2. Create the illusion of a larger space as the homeowners stated "the space felt too small and crammed in". 3. a "warmer and cozy feel, for the bath to become a comfortable and relaxing refuge". The arch to the shower was raised 3", opening the space visually to the bath and maintaining the English cottage charm. The vanity area features a Kohler recessed medicine cabinet that fits appropriately on top of the chair rail, a traditional three bulb light fixture, and a neo traditional designed Kohler Tresham rectangular sink. The goal was to create clean lines and use the geometric form of the Delta Dryden lavatory faucet. Brazilian Bordeax Siena Granite was selected for its organic, warm, and lighter background colors consisting mainly of cream with burgundy flowing throughout, drawing out the rich hues of the cabinetry. The toilet and tub were relocated on the opposite wall, creating an easily accessible and functional work space. The wainscoting and chair rail extend into the shower in a linear fashion. The basket weave pattern of the floor adds a visual and tactual texture.
