Importantly, the homeowners didn’t want their basement to function as a TV room, as they have a separate theater for movie watching. Rather, they wanted this space to facilitate conversation and provide room for games. So instead of adding a TV and a couch, we designed and built a comfortable, chic booth with shelving in a deep walnut tone. Also, to keep the booth cohesive with the rest of the house, we carried many of the same blue finishes from upstairs down to the basement. We love the lux tufted velvet on the seat and the shimmering wall treatment surrounding the booth.

No the 2nd floor with the kids' suites the playroom makes perfect retreat for the owner's children to play games, relax and hang out with friends. Built-in 7.1 surround sound with a 70" wall-mounted LED TV ensure they'll have fun watching movies or playing video games, while keeping the excess noise away from the rest of the home.

When an international client moved from Brazil to Stamford, Connecticut, they reached out to Decor Aid, and asked for our help in modernizing a recently purchased suburban home. The client felt that the house was too “cookie-cutter,” and wanted to transform their space into a highly individualized home for their energetic family of four.
In addition to giving the house a more updated and modern feel, the client wanted to use the interior design as an opportunity to segment and demarcate each area of the home. They requested that the downstairs area be transformed into a media room, where the whole family could hang out together. Both of the parents work from home, and so their office spaces had to be sequestered from the rest of the house, but conceived without any disruptive design elements. And as the husband is a photographer, he wanted to put his own artwork on display. So the furniture that we sourced had to balance the more traditional elements of the house, while also feeling cohesive with the husband’s bold, graphic, contemporary style of photography.
The first step in transforming this house was repainting the interior and exterior, which were originally done in outdated beige and taupe colors. To set the tone for a classically modern design scheme, we painted the exterior a charcoal grey, with a white trim, and repainted the door a crimson red. The home offices were placed in a quiet corner of the house, and outfitted with a similar color palette: grey walls, a white trim, and red accents, for a seamless transition between work space and home life.
The house is situated on the edge of a Connecticut forest, with clusters of maple, birch, and hemlock trees lining the property. So we installed white window treatments, to accentuate the natural surroundings, and to highlight the angular architecture of the home.
In the entryway, a bold, graphic print, and a thick-pile sheepskin rug set the tone for this modern, yet comfortable home. While the formal room was conceived with a high-contrast neutral palette and angular, contemporary furniture, the downstairs media area includes a spiral staircase, comfortable furniture, and patterned accent pillows, which creates a more relaxed atmosphere. Equipped with a television, a fully-stocked bar, and a variety of table games, the downstairs media area has something for everyone in this energetic young family.

This Milford French country home’s 2,500 sq. ft. basement transformation is just as extraordinary as it is warm and inviting. The M.J. Whelan design team, along with our clients, left no details out. This luxury basement is a beautiful blend of modern and rustic materials. A unique tray ceiling with a hardwood inset defines the space of the full bar. Brookhaven maple custom cabinets with a dark bistro finish and Cambria quartz countertops were used along with state of the art appliances. A brick backsplash and vintage pendant lights with new LED Edison bulbs add beautiful drama. The entertainment area features a custom built-in entertainment center designed specifically to our client’s wishes. It houses a large flat screen TV, lots of storage, display shelves and speakers hidden by speaker fabric. LED accent lighting was strategically installed to highlight this beautiful space. The entertaining area is open to the billiards room, featuring a another beautiful brick accent wall with a direct vent fireplace. The old ugly steel columns were beautifully disguised with raised panel moldings and were used to create and define the different spaces, even a hallway. The exercise room and game space are open to each other and features glass all around to keep it open to the rest of the lower level. Another brick accent wall was used in the game area with hardwood flooring while the exercise room has rubber flooring. The design also includes a rear foyer coming in from the back yard with cubbies and a custom barn door to separate that entry. A playroom and a dining area were also included in this fabulous luxurious family retreat. Stunning Provenza engineered hardwood in a weathered wire brushed combined with textured Fabrica carpet was used throughout most of the basement floor which is heated hydronically. Tile was used in the entry and the new bathroom. The details are endless! Our client’s selections of beautiful furnishings complete this luxurious finished basement. Looking for ideas to transform your basement into a fabulous retreat? From rich natural materials to the classic architectural details, this traditional basement exudes elegance. The basement features a great room with living area, wet bar and wine cellar.

For this commission the client hired us to do the interiors of their new home which was under construction. The style of the house was very traditional however the client wanted the interiors to be transitional, a mixture of contemporary with more classic design. We assisted the client in all of the material, fixture, lighting, cabinetry and built-in selections for the home. The floors throughout the first floor of the home are a creme marble in different patterns to suit the particular room; the dining room has a marble mosaic inlay in the tradition of an oriental rug. The ground and second floors are hardwood flooring with a herringbone pattern in the bedrooms. Each of the seven bedrooms has a custom ensuite bathroom with a unique design. The master bathroom features a white and gray marble custom inlay around the wood paneled tub which rests below a venetian plaster domes and custom glass pendant light. We also selected all of the furnishings, wall coverings, window treatments, and accessories for the home. Custom draperies were fabricated for the sitting room, dining room, guest bedroom, master bedroom, and for the double height great room. The client wanted a neutral color scheme throughout the ground floor; fabrics were selected in creams and beiges in many different patterns and textures. One of the favorite rooms is the sitting room with the sculptural white tete a tete chairs. The master bedroom also maintains a neutral palette of creams and silver including a venetian mirror and a silver leafed folding screen. Additional unique features in the home are the layered capiz shell walls at the rear of the great room open bar, the double height limestone fireplace surround carved in a woven pattern, and the stained glass dome at the top of the vaulted ceilings in the great room.

This family room was designed to maximize sleeping space while still providing a fun and functional hangout area for guests. Two custom-built gray bunk beds comfortably sleep four, each outfitted with matching bedding and built-in storage drawers below. The clean lines and neutral palette keep the room feeling bright and organized while the shiplap ceiling and warm wood flooring tie the space into the rest of the basement design.
A ping pong table in the center of the room creates an interactive recreation area, making the space perfect for kids and visiting guests. Recessed lighting provides even illumination throughout the room, while the simple, durable finishes make the space ideal for high-traffic lake house living.

Each of the four floors of this rebuilt NH frat house has an open social space for the brothers to share, part of the circulation.
At the second floor this is a TV room, with a door out to the south-facing deck. In this snowy northern climate sunny rooms and decks are very popular spots for studying and hanging out. And for enjoying media together. Our alumni clients asked for stacked screens, so that the guys could play video games and still have the TV playing. We designed a custom Pompanoosuc Mills glass fronted console for the media equipment, to go with the rest of the furniture from this local furniture maker.
I visited the frat 8 years after completion. This room only looked a little rumpled. The leather furniture and the two screens were being used just as intended.

Resting upon a 120-acre rural hillside, this 17,500 square-foot residence has unencumbered mountain views to the east, south and west. The exterior design palette for the public side is a more formal Tudor style of architecture, including intricate brick detailing; while the materials for the private side tend toward a more casual mountain-home style of architecture with a natural stone base and hand-cut wood siding.
Primary living spaces and the master bedroom suite, are located on the main level, with guest accommodations on the upper floor of the main house and upper floor of the garage. The interior material palette was carefully chosen to match the stunning collection of antique furniture and artifacts, gathered from around the country. From the elegant kitchen to the cozy screened porch, this residence captures the beauty of the White Mountains and embodies classic New Hampshire living.

Game room for a family beach house in Galveston, TX. The owner has an art collection he wanted to display so we gave him walls he could use for a blank canvas. Custom playful ceiling design is meant to give the room an unexpected twist of interest while keeping the walls nice and open for the art to be displayed. We paneled the elevator and a vintage gate to coordinate with the rest of the room. Wide/long plank LVP with a thick underlayment/pad was selected for durability and easy cleaning of sand and sea water.

This was a wonderful customer. All they requested was, they wanted their basement to have a game of thrones feel.
Nashville Wine Cellars did the rest. we first provided 20 to 30 pages of 3-d cad drawings showing all details of this basement project. Once design and price was approved, we then began the hard work. We brought in about 20 tons of Corinthian Granite, hand chiseled every stone to fit, used a black mortar to help make the stonework pop. We created niches for suits of armor, hung multiple iron doors and one walnut and iron grill door to the wine cellar. While I was designing this space I thought what if we assed some cast stone lion heads but added led light to their eyes. We also poured and installed all the cast stone door and headed post for five iron doors in this basement. I have been installing stone and brick work since 1977 and this job has become one of my favorite projects. My two daughter's Sarah Jean and Heidi Lynn mixed all the mortar, carried and pointed in all the stonework. let me know your thoughts?
