Above and Beyond is the third residence in a four-home collection in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Originally the site of the abandoned Kachina Elementary School, the infill community, appropriately named Kachina Estates, embraces the remarkable views of Camelback Mountain. Nestled into an acre sized pie shaped cul-de-sac lot, the lot geometry and front facing view orientation created a remarkable privacy challenge and influenced the forward facing facade and massing. An iconic, stone-clad massing wall element rests within an oversized south-facing fenestration, creating separation and privacy while affording views “above and beyond.” Above and Beyond has Mid-Century DNA married with a larger sense of mass and scale. The pool pavilion bridges from the main residence to a guest casita which visually completes the need for protection and privacy from street and solar exposure. The pie-shaped lot which tapered to the south created a challenge to harvest south light. This was one of the largest spatial organization influencers for the design. The design undulates to embrace south sun and organically creates remarkable outdoor living spaces. This modernist home has a palate of granite and limestone wall cladding, plaster, and a painted metal fascia. The wall cladding seamlessly enters and exits the architecture affording interior and exterior continuity. Kachina Estates was named an Award of Merit winner at the 2019 Gold Nugget Awards in the category of Best Residential Detached Collection of the Year. The annual awards ceremony was held at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference in San Francisco, CA in May 2019. Nestled in the heart of Istanbul’s prestigious Nişantaşı district, the Olga T Apartment embodies the seamless convergence of historical grandeur and contemporary sophistication. Situated within the iconic 1923 Teodoridis Apartment Building, this 165 m² residence has been meticulously reimagined to honor its architectural legacy while embracing a refined, modern aesthetic. The renovation pays homage to the apartment’s timeless charm by preserving its exquisite ceiling plasters and original floor tiles, which whisper stories of the past. These historic elements are thoughtfully juxtaposed with a contemporary design language inspired by the Bauhaus movement, resulting in a space that radiates both character and innovation. The living area is a curated sanctuary of iconic design, featuring masterpieces such as the Eames lounge chair, Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chairs, and Flos chandeliers—all set against the backdrop of a bespoke, floor-to-ceiling bookcase that elevates both function and form. In the dining space, a striking interplay of materiality and geometry takes center stage with Le Corbusier’s LC7 swivel chairs and LC6 dining table, complemented by a custom-designed display unit that exudes understated opulence. The bespoke craftsmanship continues into the private quarters, where custom-designed furniture, masterfully integrated lighting by Flos, and a meticulous attention to detail create a sanctuary of serenity and style. This residence is not just a home—it is a testament to the artistry of architectural restoration and modern-day luxury, where every detail tells a story of elegance and timeless design.

Our First Step in design process after studying the Project’s context and its surroundings, was to define each and every activity that was supposed to happen in the building at any time of night and day in a list. With a close study on the list we have developed a design program. Afterwards with taking site climate, cultural context and privacy considerations into account, we have developed the program into a basis, shaping the general geometry of the building, considering structure and functionality. In design process we have avoided unnecessary details and formalism (form without meanings). This building seeks a strong sense of place in its context, and it because this notion, it builds a firm connection to its surroundings. SABA Apartment’s presence in its context is of a dynamic kind, both inspired and influencing its functionality affected by the resident’s lifestyle. In this building the resident is an actor featuring in a scenario written by the architect and is well-aware of his needs and lifestyle, fulfilling them in SABA Apartment. In this building the border between inside and out has been designed in response to the cultural context of Iranian traditions emphasizing on a bold separation between interiors and exteriors in order to achieve privacy. In addition with taking its cultural context into consideration, the design develops consonant to the contemporary architecture trends. This transnational approach results in both dynamism and variety in façade changing each time according to the resident’s needs. The dynamism and control over the façade by the residents of the SABA Apartment is the result of the borderless design, which we believe is with no doubt one of the most interesting trends in the world of contemporary architecture, creates a virtual space, bonding reality and fantasy all together.

A contemporary hillside residential addition that blends modern clarity with subtle Mediterranean influences. The design introduces a new volume that integrates with the existing structure while enhancing natural light, spatial flow, and indoor-outdoor living. Clean geometries are complemented by warm material tones and softened architectural elements, creating a balanced dialogue between modern and traditional sensibilities. Set within the Los Angeles hillside context, the project emphasizes openness, proportion, and a seamless transition between new and existing spaces.

Ancient Art of Stone was commissioned by their clients on Gabriola Island, British Columbia, to create these river rock, feature walls and natural stone fireplaces. The natural stone saucers in these natural stone fireplaces and feature walls were gathered around the Pacific Northwest. A polished natural stone basalt hearth shimmers below the heart warming fire. This natural stone fireplace was fully pre-fabricated in our studio and when completed, shipped and installed at the clients home.

Our doors offer several key advantages: - The structure is made from a single, non-welded metal sheet, which prevents internal condensation and extends the lifespan of the door mechanisms. - Reinforced stiffening ribs inside the frame increase resistance to impact and mechanical stress. - High-quality insulation materials help reduce external noise and protect against heat loss and cold penetration. The solid iron frame and aluminum threshold provide durability and stability, while the clean, balanced design ensures the door fits a wide range of architectural styles. The ShopBoxes grew from a homeowner’s wish to craft a small complex of living spaces on a large wooded lot. Smash designed two structures for living and working, each built by the crafty, hands-on homeowner. Balancing a need for modern quality with a human touch, the sharp geometry of the structures contrasts with warmer and handmade materials and finishes, applied directly by the homeowner/builder. Central El Paso Backyard Renovation: Fifteen years is a long time for a backyard to quietly wait. At first, it was full of intention—a pool that promised summers, laughter, and long evenings. But time has a way of settling in. The water turned still, then green. Edges cracked. The space became less of a destination and more of something you looked past. Life moved forward, but the backyard stayed behind. Then came the decision: it was time. Not a patch job. Not a quick fix. A complete reset. The transformation didn’t begin beautifully—it began with demolition. The old pool was drained, exposing years of neglect etched into its surface. Crews stepped in, breaking, clearing, reshaping. What once held stagnant water became an open cavity of possibility. Steel rebar formed a new skeleton, precise and intentional. Every line measured. Every elevation reconsidered. This wasn’t just construction—it was rethinking how the space should live. The shell was rebuilt. Surfaces were refined. Plumbing, structure, and flow were corrected at their core. What had once been outdated and failing was now engineered to last. Then the shift happened. Hardscape came in—clean, warm-toned concrete replacing worn decking. Stone walls, once just boundaries, were elevated into features. Subtle textures, intentional lines. A visual language that matched the architecture of the home instead of competing with it. The pool returned—but not as it was. Now it was sharp, modern, and inviting. A long, clean body of water with a shallow tanning ledge that catches the sun just right. Stainless steel scuppers arc water into the pool—movement, sound, life. Steps are crisp, geometry is balanced, and the water reflects clarity instead of neglect. Around it, the yard found purpose. Artificial turf introduced contrast—green, controlled, low-maintenance. A pergola structure rose in the corner, creating a destination within the destination. Beneath it, a built-in outdoor kitchen turned the backyard into a place to gather, not just pass through. Lighting stitched everything together, making the space just as alive at dusk as it is under the midday sun. By the end, nothing felt accidental. What was once forgotten is now deliberate. What was once avoided is now the center of attention. Fifteen years later, the backyard didn’t just come back—it finally became what it was always supposed to be.
