Designer Sarah Robertson of Studio Dearborn helped a neighbor and friend to update a “builder grade” kitchen into a personal, family space that feels luxurious and inviting. The homeowner wanted to solve a number of storage and flow problems in the kitchen, including a wasted area dedicated to a desk, too-little pantry storage, and her wish for a kitchen bar. The all white builder kitchen lacked character, and the client wanted to inject color, texture and personality into the kitchen while keeping it classic.

After building their first home this Bloomfield couple didn't have any immediate plans on building another until they saw this perfect property for sale. It didn't take them long to make the decision on purchasing it and moving forward with another building project. With the wife working from home it allowed them to become the general contractor for this project. It was a lot of work and a lot of decision making but they are absolutely in love with their new home. It is a dream come true for them and I am happy they chose me and Dillman & Upton to help them make it a reality. The kitchen is the most used room in the home. Our clients came to us asking for help with their outdated kitchen. The home was built in 2003 and had seen many years of use with two growing children, family and friends. The original cabinets were of good quality and were still in excellent condition. We faux painted the old light maple cabinets with a beautiful dark Java stain. Before the remodel there was a chamfered soffit in the breakfast room. The main entry to the room had a header lowering the height of the opening and there was an opening with a header between the kitchen and the family room. There were also upper cabinets suspended over the base cabinetry separating the two rooms. All of this was able to be removed during the remodel. An adjacent area originally displaced was incorporated into the kitchen by removing a few walls to tie it in to the new space. Transformed into an attractive dinette bar, the complex task of incorporating stairs in the kitchen was successfully accomplished with a beautiful custom designed stainless steel and glass railing and a quaint bench seat. A cluttered closet was transformed into a functional walk in pantry just around the corner. Jurs took advantage of fourteen-foot ceilings by stacking beautiful maple cabinetry over eight feet high around the perimeter of the kitchen. Elegant glass doors with frosted glass lit from behind wrap the entire kitchen for a dramatic effect in the evening. The island was custom designed to suit the specific needs of the cook. Standard height work surfaces were created on either side of the island for food prep and chopping on two Sipo Mahogany wood tops. The center island of Cambrian honed black granite was set at 37 ½” high, perfectly suited for a tall cook! The large curved breakfast bar easily accommodates groups of kids, as well as guests and family during entertaining. New floors tie the entire living space together with White Ash Hardwood and a granite looking Porcelain tile from Italy. Full height granite backsplashes add depth, while situated on dramatic Crema Bordeaux granite counter tops that boast colors of the Grand Canyon. Frameless, wide style Shaker doors and Stainless Steel accents emphasize the warm, yet simple contemporary nature of this beautiful new space.

This kitchen was remodeled with Waypoint 650F Maple Cabinets in Cream Glaze installed on the perimeter and Waypoint 650F Maple Espresso cabinets for the island accented with New Venetian Gold Granite countertops. Accessories installed in the cabinets included a super susan cabinet, wood spin unit, four deep roll out trays in the island cabinets, and silverware/knife section insert.

In this kitchen, Medallion Gold Maple Amaretto cabinets in the Brookhill door style were installed accented with the Silverline Maple Onyx cabinets in the Fenwick door style. Brazil Oro 3cm granite with ¼” bevel edge was installed on the countertops. Full height Navona Travertine tile with 3cm and Hollywood bevel edge was installed behind the range. A Blanco Performa 1 ¾” bowl undermount sink with low divide, 10” bowls. Anthracite Brizo Single handle pull down faucet and soap dispenser in venetian bronze finish. Top Knobs hardware includes Twist Knob, Chateau II; Thames D Pull, Chateau; T-Handle Britannia; Ring Pull with backplate Chateau II in rust finish.
