We did dark walnut floors, but how did you achieve the color on the butcher block? Is it stained and sealed because it's not good prep surface or is it applied oils?
  • PRO
    Kuche+Cucina

The butcher block is a solid natural walnut - no stain.

If the counters are marble.. I have heard it is impossible to care for .. is that correct... does everything stain it?

  • readerteacherpal

I have marble counters. They do not stain at all. They etch. You can google "etched marble" to see what it looks like. It is a dull spot in the finish that you can really only see at certain angles when the light hits it just right. If you want a perfect looking counter, go with quartz. If you want a natural, beautiful counter but don't mind imperfection, go with marble.

    1) So 2 people can prep food at the same time.

    2) So when one sink is being used (or full of dishes...) you can use the second sink.

    3) You can use the island sink as an ice bucket, during parties, or to defrost meat, by filling it with water, or... many other uses, while still having a sink for all other uses.

The price of a solid wood top like this depends on the wood specie, the thickness, the size, etc. Being that this is a customer's kitchen, we can't give out a number, but will be glad to quote you one, based on your selection of the above.

Walter - anything is possible, but one always have to weigh the cost saving vs. the benefit. For example - saving a tile floor, can be easy and will save you money, but does it 'work' with the new kitchen look? What is the cost of replacing it?
With a house this old, you'll probablu have to upgrade the elect. & plumb. - since you do, would moving it, at the same time benefit the new design?
Are you planning on doing the project yourself? If not, a designer will be able to guide you through this process, answer many of these questions and help you achieve the goal, without hitting every land mine along the way.
