This old 1920's home is thought to be an original George Washington Smith home, has now been updated and extended by Architect Bob Easton of Santa Barbara. Arched walls over stairs, plaster fireplaces, and very simple, comfortable design make for a very livable home for this family with multiple pets. Leather sofas for an easy feel, over antique hand knotted rugs and old world furniture show off this old Spanish home in the Ojai Valley. The Designers used periwinkle colored windows and doors to play off the black iron windows, and real Malibu tile with white marble tile surrounds around a blue granite kitchen island. The living room ceiling is completely original, and is the inspiration for the new exposed beam master suite ceilings. All the lighting is custom wrought iron fixtures, made especially for this home. A powder room features deep blue tiles and Malibu tile wainscot, the paintings are all of simple early California scenes which all make for an earthy, simple old time style, Project Location: Ojai, California. The front of the house features an open porch, a common feature in the neighborhood. Stairs leading up to it are tucked behind one of a pair of brick walls. The brick was installed with raked (recessed) horizontal joints which soften the overall scale of the walls. The clerestory windows topping the taller of the brick walls bring light into the foyer and a large closet without sacrificing privacy. The living room windows feature a slight tint which provides a greater sense of privacy during the day without having to draw the drapes. An overhang lined on its underside in stained cedar leads to the entry door which again is hidden by one of the brick walls.

The cabinetry was designed with an emphasis on organization and accessibility with roll out drawers and shelf under the sink , cutlery tray and pot and pan storage. The window sill was finished with Geriba Beach granite with the casing terminating into it for symmetry and balance. Lighting accents the granite and provides proper illumination for preparation. According to the homeowner, she "loves her easy access to the cabinets. Every inch of space is functional, the countertops sparkle, are lush and rich looking and the storage space exceeds their expectations while sticking to their budget. No longer is the kitchen drab, poorly lit and inadequately functioning, this kitchen is now a beautifully organized, efficient space.

The perimeter is Leathered Absolute Black Granite: a classic solid black with a unique textured finish that is soft to the touch and each to keep clean. The island and range backsplash are crafted from exotic Saturnia Granite from Brazil. This unique stone is reminiscent of a starry night sky with the Milky Way running through it. Huge flecks of mica give it a natural shimmer.

Kitchen Tile - I have been wanting to do a grey grout with these glossy 3x6's for forever! I loved how this turned out and how lovely it ties in with the granite. Which is Bianco Romano! Another love of mine.

The kitchen was opened up into what is now the dining room for maximum space. Where their dining table used to be the clients opted for a large square island. They accented the medium dark maple cabinets with a black island, vent hood and molding. The kitchen has beautiful decorative backsplash and updated recessed lighting in the vaulted ceiling.

Because granite is 100% natural, and no two pieces are alike, (even the sample of granite you saw in making your choice will vary somewhat from what is installed in your home), your installed countertop will not have a uniform look, which appeals to some who like the one of a kind nature of the stone.
