Minimalist exterior home photo in Salt Lake City

A spectacular dream home nestles thoughtfully into an east-facing slope of the Berkshires, blending into its mountain context. The retreat provides year-round opportunities for an active family to absorb mesmerizing multi-seasonal views. Two contemporary buildings—a main home and a guest cabin conceived of in two separate phases—are carefully positioned to preserve existing mature hardwood trees and to adhere to strict watershed protection guidelines established by the Berkshire Scenic Mountains Act. The site plan purposefully engages dramatic topographic variations that solidify connections between interior and exterior spaces. Newly sculpted landforms retained by crisp board form concrete walls are smothered with native fern and blueberry sods. New native shrub colonies provide scale and enclosure to the property. Cascading stone staircases link the house to two generously-sized terraces paved with linear bands of reclaimed granite curbing that create wonderful opportunities to relax and admire surrounding views. The upper terrace provides ample room for movable furnishings such as a teak dining set, a movable corten steel fire bowl, and built-in steel firewood crib, while the lower terrace revels in a gorgeous in-ground swimming pool. Smaller stone terraces are positioned at the front entrance and kitchen for a movable grill, while stone paths with lawn joints guide guests between buildings. Adhering to ADA guidelines, our plans included widening the doorway, and replacing a hinged door with a space-saving pocket door for both the entry and a newly added water closet. The curbless shower space features a decorative tile backsplash as the shower’s focal point, bench seating, brushed nickel grab bars and shower fixtures that perfectly complement the drawer pulls on the bathroom’s cabinetry. Inspiration for a transitional living room remodel in Houston

Mike and Anne of Barrington Hills desperately needed to update and renovate both their kid’s hall bath and guest bath, and in their 1980’s home each project presented a different set of unique challenges to overcome. When they set out to identify the right remodeling company to partner with, it was important to find a company that could help them to visualize design solutions for the bath renovations. When they came across Advance Design Studio’s website, they were immediately drawn to the solution-oriented remodeling process and the family friendly company. They say they chose Advance Design because of the integrated approach of “Common Sense Remodeling”, making the design, project management and construction all happen in one place. When they met with Project Designer Michelle Lecinski, they knew they chose the right company. “Michelle’s excellent work on the initial designs made it easy to proceed with Advance Design Studio,” Mike said. Like most homeowners anticipating a big renovation project, they had some healthy fears; with two bathrooms being remodeled at the same time they worried about timeframes and staying within budget. With the help of Michelle, and the “Common Sense” guidelines, they were confident that Advance Design would stay true, orchestrating all the moving parts to stay within both the estimated timeline and budget. The guest bath offered the biggest design challenge. A dormer obstruction made the already cramped shower awkward to access. Mike and Anne also wanted the shower size to be expanded, making it more accommodating. Working with Advance’s construction expert DJ Yurik, Michelle relocated the shower concealing the original dormer and creating a larger, more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing guest shower. The unsightly and not at all user-friendly closet was removed and replaced with elegant White Maple Dura Supreme cabinetry with much improved function featuring dual tall linen cabinets, a special makeup area and two sinks, providing a dual vanity which was extremely important for better guest use. The Fossil Brown quartz countertop is in pleasing contrast to the white cabinetry, and coordinates nicely with the mocha porcelain tile gracing the shower for an accent. The decorative glazed turquoise tile backsplash, tile border, and bottle niche adds a taste of marine green to the room, while marble-looking porcelain tile makes guests feel they are staying in a 5-star hotel. Polished nickel Kohler plumbing fixtures were chosen to add a touch of sophistication. This renovated guest bath is comfortable and elegant, and Anne and Mike’s house guests may never want to leave! “The end result was updated and restyled bathrooms that the client will enjoy and increase the value of their home,” Designer Michelle said. The children’s hall bath had its own set of challenges. The current placement of the sink was not conducive to the best use of the existing space, nor did it allow for any visual interest, something Advance’s designers always work to achieve even within the tight confines of a small bath. Advance removed the linen closet and used the gain in wall space to create a dramatic focal point on the vanity wall. They also took additional space that wasn’t being used for new Storm Gray Dura Supreme tall built-in linen cabinets, creating functional storage space that the former bath lacked. A customized glass splash panel was created for the bath, and the high ceilings with skylights were accented with a custom-made track lighting fixture featuring industrial pipe and cage materials. Authentic cement encaustic tile was used wall to wall surrounding the vanity to create a dramatic and interesting back drop for the new elegant and stately furniture-like double sink wall. Hand-made encaustic tile originated in Western Europe beginning in the 1850’s and reminded Mike and Anne of tile they had seen and loved from their travels overseas. Today, encaustic tile has made a re-appearance in today’s modern bath design with its wide array of appealing patterns and artistic use of color. Oil rubbed bronze Kohler fixtures echo the black accents in the beautiful tile pattern and reflect the matte black of the unique lighting detail. Easy to maintain Blanca Arabescato Quartz countertops add practicality and natural beauty and compliments the warm wood porcelain tile floors. This handsome bath has generated praise from friends and family even before it’s complete unveiling as photos of the space leaked out on social media! It’s not only completely functional to use, but especially pretty to look at. “Advance Design Studio did a terrific job for us. We really appreciated how easy it was to work with them on a complex project of the complete remodeling of two bathrooms. They very capably handled all the details from design, to project management, to construction. It is a great group of people to work with and we would welcome the opportunity to work with them again anytime,” Mike said.

What to do with the empty, awkward 20-by-30-foot space at the entrance to our yard? Without a stitch of furniture, this concrete slab felt more like an extension of our driveway than a livable space. So we got to work, with a few guidelines: The adjacent Sun Room incorporated low seating, so this area would need some height. We needed something welcoming that could double as an outdoor work station. It wasn’t until a 2011 visit to our favorite industrial surplus store that we stumbled onto two industrial stepladders for $60 (just above scrap), which we quickly snatched up. Ryan knew he could connect them into a single frame, install wheels, and make either seating and/or a table. The final product was much different than the original concept — and turned out to be one of our favorite pieces. Whether it’s making coffee in the morning or entertaining till 2 AM, the rolling arbor is the center for many activities on our blog or just a shelter for typing on a sunny day. Other pieces in the arbor room include a 12-foot-long planter box along the east wall of the house and a rolling patio planter built for our pencil tree.

Cat Neitzey from Reico Kitchen & Bath in Fredericksburg, VA designed a modern and accessible primary bathroom remodel featuring Merillat Classic cabinetry. The bathroom cabinets are the Lanielle door style in a Whisper finish, complemented by hardware from the Jeffrey Alexander Alvar Collection. The countertop is MSI Frost White quartz, accompanied by black fixtures from the Kohler Tempered Collection. The bathroom also includes Atlas Tile Grespania Trivoli 12x24 wall & floor tile, as well as Pan Lungarno Nero Penny with Nero Chevron Accent tile. Cat expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to work on this project. "The style the clients brought to the table was so fun, and the showroom appointments were creative and interesting. This fully accessible renovation in a multi-generational home addressed practical concerns with standard construction. This Newton Upper Falls referral required a full exterior painting on this 1890’s home. This home first required an EPA lead safety set up before any work can begin. If you have an older home, it may have lead paint. Federal and state law require that work done on homes built before 1978 is done according to EPA guidelines, using protective material and gear. Our painters are all EPA certified and follow lead paint removal specifications in these circumstances- we are committed to doing what is best for the environment, and the health and safety of our clients and crews. The home was prepped with a thorough wash by hand using bleach and jomax. The siding, trim, doors, window casings, window sashes, gutters, and porch were all scraped, feather sanded, spot primed and painted with two new coats. The siding was Sherwin Williams Sun Bleached Ochre, while the trim is Sherwin Williams Rookwood Shutter Green.

Additionally, an outdoor kitchen with a television and audio and lighting system was installed. Monello also incorporated two water features and different textured pavers along with pergolas, seat walls and a custom company logo. The entire courtyard was installed to ICPI and NCMA guidelines. Monello also coordinated with multiple trades and specialists for their insight and knowledge of specific installation practices. Monello decided to incorporate two different pavers, smooth pavers for wheelchairs and textures pavers for designated areas (kitchens, seating areas, sensory gardens). Raised planters at ADA height, featuring a centered three core-drilled basalt stones. Includes inlay and a color-complimented border. The outdoor kitchen has a lowered granite section specifically for residents in wheelchairs. This section of the kitchen is also mirrored by the Techo Bloc Villagio paver border around this inlay. Additionally, the company extended the pergola runners to create more shade for the people sitting at the kitchen. This featured area of the courtyard is located under a massive pergola. The central water feature creates a serene sitting environment and serves as an oasis in the center of this enclosed courtyard complete with the sounds of running water, beautiful plantings, and complementing lights.
