When we call this kitchen, dining area and bathroom "Tiny but Luxe," we mean it literally: this kitchen is a walk-through galley that's hardly more than 125 square feet, and the bathroom is quite small as well. So in order to make this tiny home feel more spacious, we opened the wall to the living room to allow light to flow through the living spaces to the dining nook, and over the new peninsula we designed a custom wine rack to create a differentiation of spaces. With a carefully heightened archway between the nook and kitchen, and a new matching arched opening between kitchen and living space, there is a beautiful, and natural openness now even as we were careful to delineate the spaces. A custom banquette in a beautiful hunter green and gorgeous wallpaper draw the eye to the dining area, and also create a feeling of a larger space.

This spacious 2-story home features a mudroom entry complete with a built-in desk and wooden lockers. The spacious, open floor plan includes heightened 9’ ceilings on the first floor and a convenient Flex Room to the front of the home. The expansive Kitchen features granite countertops, tile backsplash, stainless steel appliance, and island with breakfast bar. The Kitchen opens to the Dining Area that provides access to deck and backyard. Adjacent to the Kitchen is the Great Room with cozy gas fireplace with wall-to-ceiling stone in the Great Room. On the way up to the 2nd floor, a built-in window seat adorns the stairway landing. On the 2nd floor are all 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, convenient laundry room, and a spacious rec room. The Owner’s Suite features craftsman style wainscoting accent wall, an expansive closet, and private bathroom with 5’ shower, and double bowl vanity with cultured marble top.

I eliminated a hall linen closet, and moved a wall, to make way for an expanded guest bath. Floor to ceiling cut stone tile became the focal point of the bathroom, with an elegant mirror from Uttermost, to reflect the large, modern shower, with porcelain tile placed to heighten the look and feel. The custom bedding showcases the bright, yet soothing guest room illuminated with an oversized, Savoy House, ten-light chandelier. A couple wanted a weekend retreat without spending a majority of their getaway in an automobile. Therefore, a lot was purchased along the Rocky River with the vision of creating a nearby escape less than five miles away from their home. This 1,300 sf 24’ x 24’ dwelling is divided into a four square quadrant with the goal to create a variety of interior and exterior experiences while maintaining a rather small footprint. Typically, when going on a weekend retreat one has the drive time to decompress. However, without this, the goal was to create a procession from the car to the house to signify such change of context. This concept was achieved through the use of a wood slatted screen wall which must be passed through. After winding around a collection of poured concrete steps and walls one comes to a wood plank bridge and crosses over a Japanese garden leaving all the stresses of the daily world behind. The house is structured around a nine column steel frame grid, which reinforces the impression one gets of the four quadrants. The two rear quadrants intentionally house enclosed program space but once passed through, the floor plan completely opens to long views down to the mouth of the river into Lake Erie. On the second floor the four square grid is stacked with one quadrant removed for the two story living area on the first floor to capture heightened views down the river. In a move to create complete separation there is a one quadrant roof top office with surrounding roof top garden space. The rooftop office is accessed through a unique approach by exiting onto a steel grated staircase which wraps up the exterior facade of the house. This experience provides an additional retreat within their weekend getaway, and serves as the apex of the house where one can completely enjoy the views of Lake Erie disappearing over the horizon. Visually the house extends into the riverside site, but the four quadrant axis also physically extends creating a series of experiences out on the property. The Northeast kitchen quadrant extends out to become an exterior kitchen & dining space. The two-story Northwest living room quadrant extends out to a series of wrap around steps and lounge seating. A fire pit sits in this quadrant as well farther out in the lawn. A fruit and vegetable garden sits out in the Southwest quadrant in near proximity to the shed, and the entry sequence is contained within the Southeast quadrant extension. Internally and externally the whole house is organized in a simple and concise way and achieves the ultimate goal of creating many different experiences within a rationally sized footprint.

For this small Toronto condo, our main goal was to heighten function while adding our client’s personal style throughout. To create a more spacious and welcoming feel focused on furniture with clean lines, minimal accents, a comfortable sectional to seat multiple guests, and an artwork display creates a welcoming relaxed interior. The concept for this project was to reveal the sensation of an active, living landscape in flux and echo the vitality and energy of the wetland that comprises much of this rural site. A mosaic of shifting concrete slabs, set in a field of limestone bands and chip seal, flows through screens of bamboo, set in motion by the slightest breeze. The implied motion of the ground plane blurs the boundary where the terrace and parking court meet, serving the dual purpose of expanded entertaining area or overflow parking during large gatherings. The clipped formal hedge that folds around the house and delineates the lawn stands in stark opposition to the unrestrained hemlock forest that envelops the property, heightening the contrast between the two. The shifting planes of the boardwalk entrance connects these volumes, defining the primary visual and functional axes of the site. Scott Carman

A heightened experience to study and implement light strategies that will be put onto this most exclusive property highlighting Japanese Maple trees over a hundred years old. Such intensive care and love for the property with areas of Zen and meditation. The light intent complements each area in mood and harmony, It was interesting to watch tree specialists that were retained to prune these majestic beauties into Bonsai formations. The attention of detail over the past forty years to manicure these grounds elevated my acumen to do a superb job illuminating each and every focal plant on the property, the areas with specific moods in mind, and finalize with a creative all inclusive scene.
