Inspiration for a contemporary bathroom remodel in Detroit

Love the overscale windows. And the outdoor spaces are so great.” Situated atop an old Civil War battle site, this new residence was conceived for a couple with southern values and a rock-and-roll attitude. The project consists of a house, a pool with a pool house and a renovated music studio. A marriage of modern and traditional design, this project used a combination of California redwood siding, stone and a slate roof with flat-seam lead overhangs. Intimate and well planned, there is no space wasted in this home. The execution of the detail work, such as handmade railings, metal awnings and custom windows jambs, made this project mesmerizing. Cues from the client and how they use their space helped inspire and develop the initial floor plan, making it live at a human scale but with dramatic elements. Their varying taste then inspired the theme of traditional with an edge. The lines and rhythm of the house were simplified, and then complemented with some key details that made the house a juxtaposition of styles. The wood Ultimate Casement windows were all standard sizes. However, there was a desire to make the windows have a “deep pocket” look to create a break in the facade and add a dramatic shadow line. Marvin was able to customize the jambs by extruding them to the exterior. They added a very thin exterior profile, which negated the need for exterior casing. The same detail was in the stone veneers and walls, as well as the horizontal siding walls, with no need for any modification. This resulted in a very sleek look. Best of Houzz Kitchen Design 2016 winner. A custom kitchen remodel was one of the final projects for this beautiful Georgian Century Home. All the details were part of the effort to maintain the feel of an old kitchen but with all the most current conveniences. Notice the glass cabinet hung in front of a window, granite counter top repeated as the back splash, porcelain tiles that mimic wood and marble on the floor, a stunning island light and the coffered ceiling. "Because it is all outside I won't spend a lot of money on any of it; I find cheap old junk in the trash or garage sales with cute colors or patterns and make it happen." Inspired by the colors from the garden, various items are recovered or painted in pastel hues to create a comfortable and engaging place to relax. "Raymond and I love our outdoor wrap-around porch in the summer. Because I decorate it like a house outdoors it creates the comfort of a southern home with surrounding gardens that are bursting with color and nature and fresh smells everyday. You can't help but want to sit and drink your coffee there in the morning and soak it all in. You smell the Lake Erie breeze and hear the waves crashing; its so serene." Possibly the only major improvement that needed addressed upon moving in was the landscaping. After removing overgrown shrubs, pruning trees, and replacing the old fencing, the couple tackled the largest part: the parking lot. Outside of what had been the dentist's waiting room, the entire side yard had been covered in asphalt, with a separate entrance to the street. Lee & James wanted to update to their primary bathroom and ensuite closet. It was a small space that had a few pain points. The closet footprint was minimal and didn’t allow for sufficient organization of their wardrobe, a daily struggle for the couple. In addition, their ensuite bathroom had a shower that was petite, and the door from the bedroom was glass paned so it didn’t provide privacy. Also, the room had no bathtub – something they had desired for the ten years they’d lived in the home. The bedroom had an indent that took up much of one wall with a large wardrobe inside. Nice, but it didn’t take the place of a robust closet. The McAdams team helped the clients create a design that extended the already cantilevered area where the primary bathroom sat to give the room a little more square footage, which allowed us to include all the items the couple desired. The indent and wardrobe in the primary bedroom wall were removed so that the interior of the wall could be incorporated as additional closet space. New sconces were placed on either side of the bed, and a ceiling fan was added overhead for ultimate comfort on warm summer evenings. The former closet area was repurposed to create the couple’s new and improved (and now much larger) shower. Beautiful Bianco St. Croix tile was installed on the walls and floor of the shower and a frameless glass door highlighting the fabulous Brizo rainshower head and Delta adjustable handheld showerhead all combine to provide the ultimate showering experience. A gorgeous walnut vanity with a Calacutta Gold Honed Marble slab top (that coordinates with the kitchen) replaced the old cabinet. A matte black Pottery Barn Vintage Pill Shaped Mirror was placed above the undermount sink, while a striking LED pendant serves as the main light source. The newly added square footage allows for a Victoria and Albert stand-alone soaking tub with an adjacent towel warmer, all of which almost makes you forget you’re in a home and not a high-end spa. Finally, just past the new Toto toilet with bidet, the couple got their new, large walk-in closet with customized storage solutions for their individual needs. The transformation absolutely helped Lee and James love their home again!
