Example of a large mountain style formal light wood floor living room design in Salt Lake City with beige walls and a standard fireplace

The ceiling was covered in reclaimed wood. The floors are commercial grade vinyl. The dining room table is made from mesquite which is a native wood from South Texas. The stair railing in the background was made from mesquite branches cut on the property. The stone is an Arkansas Stone that was added in the remodel. Photography by Pam Fulcher. Design by Steve Akin for Maison, Rockport, Tx.

The clients love of dark woods was carried into the living space with a gold and cork vinyl wallcovering creating the backdrop of an 85" television. The built in, faux finished, storage unit below the television contains a drawer with a mesh front to house a subwoofer. The sofa is upholstered in a combination of leather and upsholtery. A wood top slides from side to side on our custom ottoman.

An existing home on Hunts Point was in need of a landscape renovation. SCJ Studio transformed the existing, uneven and small pool terrace from “afterthought” to an expansive outdoor amenity oasis with a built in gas firepit, ipe deck on a single level, and included a new privacy fence, raised corten steel planters and dramatic lighting. A new side garden with play lawn for the kids included raised cedar planting beds, crushed granite steel edged walkways, lighting and thoughtful planting.

This wonderful traditional house is located on the edge of Hampton Bays and faces magnificent eastern water views. The room is flooded with early morning light so intense that medium to heavy sun screen shades were installed to filter the light diffusing but not blocking the view. A palate of neutral colors was assembled so that the bay view and beaches remained the focus of the room. The furniture plan as seen from the overhead picture divided the room into two comfortable seating areas. The large rug for budget purposes is made from broadloom carpet and detailed with a cut piled border. The large rug is the background that visually hinges the two seating groups together. Each seating group has different furniture each have a ottoman with tray serving as a coffee table. The fine metal table behind the sofa allows flowers or other object to be centrally displayed. The crimson red upholstered swivel chairs turn outward toward the scenic view. A tiered metal chandelier was hung from the highest ceiling height and adds intimacy to this large great room setting. The most important change to the architecture of the room was to remove the columns and replacement of them with a design of a series of arches integrated with the balustrade above visually creating more balance architectural appearance.

Lisa loves strong bold color! She is not afraid of mixing colors and patterns. The end result was a beautiful eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary. From the beginning my client was worried about the kids using the furniture in the living room so we went with a Holly Hunt textured soft grey indoor/outdoor performance fabric for the sofa – sturdy and easy to clean. The side chairs were done in a strong purple velvet -- not an indoor/outdoor but still a sturdy fabric. The client also wanted help in selecting the right dimensions for the sofa because the space was tight and was also a walk-through area from the front door to the kitchen in the back of the house. I did a couple layouts and showed her how the 6-1/2 foot sofa she picked out would work perfectly in the space without looking skimpy.
The various shades of purple and grey were the background colors for this room (peaceful and beautiful especially with natural light streaming in), then we added a strong splash of orange for pop – the orange tiger lilies and the elephant pillow I found at a San Francisco boutique that tied in the orange with the purple -- both stand-outs. The Madeline Weinrib Tibetan rug and the elephant pillow gave the space a sophisticated global look and feel. Not too many spaces could accommodate the strong colors that were in the elephant pillow but when we saw it in the room we knew it was meant for that space and totally comfortable at home.

Beautiful "Transitional" kitchen design. Painted white, raised panel cabinets on the wall with a contrasting Cherry Slate island. The floors are a porcelain wood plank. Counter tops are two different materials. We used a beige quartz in the kitchen and quartzite on the island. The backsplash is largely 3x6 white ceramic subway tile with an accent above the cooktop. The hood is custom made by Matt Reidhead. Enjoy!
