Our fresh take on Mediterranean design for Vicki Gunvalson of the Real Houseives of Orange County included a brand new kitchen remodel with Moroccan influences in a creamy white, worn grey and gilded gold color palette. The matte Spanish white walls are adorned with natural unglazed clay tile from Morocco, the lantern light fixtures with carved wood tassel embellishments are custom, the appliance package includes Thermador, Miele and subzero, upholstered bar stools push up to the custom carved wood island with calacatta marble, succulents were arranged in antique wood dough bowls and all cream white dishes and worn wood accessories were used to soften the ambiance.

The homeowner desired an outdoor space that would include an area for relaxing with a full view of the pool, an outdoor kitchen, a fire feature and a dining area. The space replaced a small patio cover that was just not big enough. We had to remove three 2nd floor windows in order to tie into the home and give the new cover a proper pitch. On the interior, we created art nooks where the windows had been. The kitchen has a tile backsplash, custom vent hood cover over a ventahood liner, custom cabinets that house the wireless electronic system, and is equipped with an RCS grill and stainless drawers, doors and an outdoor refrigerator. The bar area has bar top seating and a beautiful copper backsplash. The fascia is stone (Quarry Cream Rough) and matches the columns and fire pit bases. The fire pits are topped with Noce tumbled 16x24 pavers. They are custom built gas fire pits that allow for a full view of the pool and backyard. The flooring is a special feature! It is 12X48 paver tiles from Turkey that look like wood. The wood grain look was computerized directly on them. They have a rough texture, so it isn’t slippery (perfect for poolside). The ceiling is a coffered ceiling using tongue and groove pine that has been painted. The beams are wrapped in hardie and painted. The ceiling fans are Haiku fans. This design was created to allow for a wide open view of the pool and backyard as well as create a grand entrance to the yard from the home. Since the pool was there first, it was important to keep that as the main focus of the backyard! We think it's just gorgeous! TK IMAGES

Inspiration for a rustic bedroom remodel in Atlanta

Hallways can often present a design problem. If you have kids running through them, you don't really want to hang anything that could get knocked off. A mural is a great way to add color to these often dark spaces. This mural, by the way, was produced as a mirror image of the original image so the herons and egrets were flying toward the kitchen area. We call this dining room modern-farmhouse-chic! As the focal point of the room, the fireplace was the perfect space for an accent wall. We white-washed the fireplace’s brick and added a white surround and mantle and finished the wall with white shiplap. We also added the same shiplap as wainscoting to the other walls. A special feature of this room is the coffered ceiling. We recessed the chandelier directly into the beam for a clean, seamless look. This farmhouse style home in West Chester is the epitome of warmth and welcoming. We transformed this house’s original dark interior into a light, bright sanctuary. From installing brand new red oak flooring throughout the first floor to adding horizontal shiplap to the ceiling in the family room, we really enjoyed working with the homeowners on every aspect of each room. This is a real picture! High quality outdoor TV's have to be both tremendously durable and provide the vivid images we've become accustomed to inside our homes. The Sun Brite Marquee is their flagship, and capable of producing vivid images even in direct sunlight. No small task! David Ward is a fantastic photographer!

Take a look at the image of the living/dining space with doors opening to a pool beyond. This is an elegant, finely-appointed room with aged, hand-hewn beams, dormered clerestory windows, and radiant-heated limestone floors. But the real power of the space derives less from these handsome details and more from the wide opening centered on the pool. The occupants of the room feel like they’re poolside, even while inside. When they’re entertaining, it matters little whether guests are on the terrace or in the living room; it all feels like one great space. The four-wide bank of doors is designed so that the central two are hinged directly to the flanking ones. Thus, when opened, they are precisely aligned, it seems as if there are somehow only two doors, and the assembly appears less cluttered. A mechanized, roll-down screen descends from above to completely secure the opening against insects. When the screen is in use, the doors at the far ends are used for passage (a word of advice: make sure to devise a screening solution in any multi-door design). Two images from a seasonal lakefront cottage in East Haddam combine to make an even bolder statement. This three-story building has a master suite occupying the entire third floor.

Filled with numerous special touches and details, this Tudor home is elegant and sophisticated. The light filled, step-down family room has a custom, vaulted tray ceiling and a custom, built-in home bar with Sub-Zero drink drawers. The gorgeous Rumford double-sided fireplace (the other side is outside on the covered patio) has a custom-made plaster moulding surround with a beige herringbone tile insert. The “gentleman’s office” is a converted former covered porch, with special custom designed shelves that we built directly into the stone walls. The room is finished off with raised panels on the ceiling and lighting recessed directly into the soffit. In the master bath we strategically used mirrors to give the illusion of space and airiness. The custom quartz faucet detail we created behind the soaking tub is unique touch that sets this room apart. We built the covered patio with outdoor Rumford fireplace to blend seamlessly with the original home. Copper flashing on the roof’s design and spiraled lattice iron work are special, subtle, functional details that make this space feel like an European estate. DESIGN + INNOVATION: Award of Excellence PROJECT: The Prairie House CLIENT: Name Withheld ARCHITECTURE FIRM: Fisher ARCHitecture PHOTOGRAPHER: Fisher ARCHitecture DESCRIPTION: Designed to relate directly to its location, the Prairie House recontextualizes Midwestern building motifs from the 1950s and ’60s, simultaneously old fashioned and tough yet ambiguously futuristic. Interior spaces are nestled in the ground, with earth sheltered construction protecting from high winds and variable temperatures that characterize this part of the country; rooms have a direct relationship with one of three partially enclosed courtyards that are carved from the solid mass of earth. JURY COMMENTS: The interesting aspect of this project is the self-imposed exploration of contextualizing a Midwest site where there are only roads and cornfields. The iconographic images remind us of Venturi’s Learning from Las Vegas, from the large-scale billboard and letters to the symbolic buffalo on the renderings. The design gestures all seem responsive to its site both in terms of its cultural heritage and to its environmental realities.

This butterfly roof is canted in two directions, the one obvious in this image. It is also sloped front to back to harness gravity to direct rain and melted snow to a downspout on the opposite side of the house. The upward pitched roof mirrors the slope of the Wasatch Mountains located just out of frame.
