Pittman Residence by Designed by A.E. Bye, Dialogue led by Kimberly Mercurio of Kimberly Mercurio Landscape Architecture
Designed by twentieth-century landscape architect A.E. Bye, the Pittman Residence in Falls Village, Connecticut features an artistic landscape design both inspired by and accentuating the area’s natural ecological character. Embodying the architect’s own creative aesthetic, the property incorporates various undulating landforms that draw on the presence of natural shadows to create a memorable landscape that lingers in the minds of visitors long after they bid the property ado. This season, join landscape architect and scholar Kimberly Mercurio as she leads an engaging dialogue on the design history of the Pittman Residence and the significance of Bye’s play on shadows in landscape architecture. With her immense knowledge of A.E. Bye’s work, having recently completed the A.E. Bye/Landscape Architecture Archives Research Fellowship at Penn State University and received a grant from Dumbarton Oaks to further study and document his achievements, Mercurio’s presentation promises to be both educational and inspiring. Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) have been all the craze here in San Diego and all across the state after Sacramento changed a few laws, making it easier for California residents to add and ADU to their property. There are specifications, of course, but the value of an ADU is immense and can have a plethora of different benefits for each family. Two main benefits for adding another dwelling unit to your property are: 1) adding value to your property, and/or 2) to allow your property to house more of your family.
Please browse through the following gallery for our Bay View ADU project here in San Diego, CA. If you have any questions about adding an ADU to your property, please book a consultation with us either through Houzz or our website today and we will be glad to help answer any questions you may have.

The scale of Signorelli's mater bath is striking. They set their eyes on a particularly hard-to-find marble from Italy known as Paonazetto and used it for the floors, walls, moldings and trim. The warmth of the bathroom is accented with a blend of wood paneling, creamy colored walls, and an oversized window. Yet your eyes are drawn to the marble. Seventeen slabs were used in a book matched pattern to create the illusion that each edge of stone is against a mirror. The result is stunning! This project brought together a unique vision of the homeowner with the craftsmanship of Millennium Stone Ltd. and gives you the impression that a painter was commissioned to create an immense work of art.

This urban townhouse took on new life when it was renovated for a couple relocating from New York City. The owner’s sophisticated taste, cultivated from world travels, paired with the character of the existing home and resulted in a fresh and colorful gem in the heart of the historic downtown.
Extensive approvals from the local Historic District Commission preceded an addition on the rear of the time-honored building and a complete restoration of the exterior. The addition encompasses a first-floor, finished garage with arch doors that open to the gardens, ideal for entertaining. Above the garage accommodates the master bedroom, walk-in closets and a bathroom suite. The exterior restoration allowed the addition of window pediments, shutters with authentic hardware and gaslight features. Pocket gardens surround the townhouse and boast multiple plantings that complement a historic environment.
The interior of the home was restructured to allow for reworking of the main stair. The reconfigured flight can now carry the weight of books and art alongside ascending residents and guests. Amid construction, two previously hidden fireplaces were uncovered. By the end of the renovation, four fireplaces were entirely refurbished and now lend immense aesthetic to interior design.
The interior finishes within the home keep visitors engaged and impressed. From imported Italian tile to contextually historic light switches, the colorful décor is appealing to all senses. Specially painted walls coordinate with furnishings, bookcases and art.

Her contemporary Seattle features a limitless sky and water view. The view inside Leslie’s kitchen was a little different. “Our kitchen was very dated and in need of renovation,” she says. Her 1974 contemporary home is perched on a bluff overlooking Puget Sound, but her dark, cramped kitchen didn’t take advantage of the stellar views. For Leslie and her husband, Peter, the kitchen only allowed one person at a time to cook.
This was not like Leslie’s charming cottage. She longed for the welcoming, light filled, open space of her cottage kitchen. But how to bring that feel to a mid-70’s contemporary, especially one that allowed no room for expansion?
For Seattle Neil Kelly Design Consultant, Diane Forman, the goal was simple. “How do I translate the crisp, clean, cheering feeling of a Victorian cottage kitchen to a contemporary space?”
Diane needed some extra space, and what she found wasn’t much. She found 12 inches of space that was available without infringing on the dining room window nearest the existing kitchen. “The impact of that additional 12 inches was immense in that it opened up storage solutions not previously conceivable,” Diane says. “It made it possible for two people to comfortably occupy and move within that space. Just one foot, that’s all it took,” she says.
As their current locations and sizes took full advantage of the view, it made no sense to move the windows, but she still needed to “lighten up” the dark kitchen. “I needed to create a joyously simple, very traditional color palette for a sophisticated contemporary setting,” Diane says. “And I replaced the ubiquitous 1970’s fluorescent light boxes with recessed can lighting, under cabinet task lighting, and some beautiful hand-blown pendant lights placed above the peninsula.”
But there was one more hurdle to overcome: Storage. Diane needed to create storage for dishes, pans, spices, wine, trays, cookbooks, small appliances and recycling. And she also had to make space for her client’s crystal collection. “Relocated the display cabinet and adding a new gently curved eating bar accommodates seating for four without intruding on the existing window nearest the kitchen”, Diane says.
There are multiple details that add up to a distinctly modern feeling and optimism to the space. And in the long run Leslie and Peter have a kitchen that matches their view. “Diane and I were trying to find a transitional style that would be cottage-like, and also urban modern,” says Leslie. “I think she did a very good job.”

This house is set on a sunny natural plateau, sheltered from the wind and enjoys magnificent views of Sutton Mounts and Echo. The layout of the house integrates harmoniously with the surrounding forest, opening to nature through large expanses of glass and terraces that connect the living spaces to the forest. A long roof shelters the house, its deep eaves acting as a sunshade and defining protected outside spaces. The wide south and east terraces, close to ground level, bring the house into contact with its site and enjoy lots of sunshine. A screen porch is strategically located to avoid blocking the primary views and provides access to the forest. The living living spaces are arranged in an open layout under a ceiling ceiling that reaches 12 feet in height, yet more intimate spaces such as the fireplace alcove modulate the spaces between the higher volumes. The construction will achieve Novoclimat certification and integrates among other things a radiant floor fed by a geothermal heating system. This project was completed in collaboration with engineers and Construction Boivin.

For a family that loves hosting large gatherings, this expansive home is a dream; boasting two unique entertaining spaces, each expanding onto outdoor-living areas, that capture its magnificent views. The sheer size of the home allows for various ‘experiences’; from a rec room perfect for hosting game day and an eat-in wine room escape on the lower-level, to a calming 2-story family greatroom on the main. Floors are connected by freestanding stairs, framing a custom cascading-pendant light, backed by a stone accent wall, and facing a 3-story waterfall. A custom metal art installation, templated from a cherished tree on the property, both brings nature inside and showcases the immense vertical volume of the house.

Ortus Exteriors - NOW this house has everything the homeowner could ever need or want! Under the 900 sq. ft. attached roof, grill and smoke meats with the 25 ft. kitchen, serve drinks while watching the game by the bar, or sit on the hearth of a stone fire place. The rare, Sinker Cypress, reclaimed wood used for the roof was brought in from the swamps of Florida. The large pool is 48 by 23 feet with a Midnight Blue finish and features an immense boulder waterfall that used 12 tons of rock! The decking continues to the back of the pool for an elevated area perfect for dancing or watching the sunset. We loved this project and working with the homeowner.
