Losing large specimen trees is never desirable. But when the unimaginable happens, we are presented with an opportunity to rethink and refresh, even in traditional residential settings. We replaced the lawn area beneath the remaining London plane with a fine fescue seed mix. Our design strategy was to hold space and create immediate impact while reducing maintenance needs as the landscape matured. Into this base, we planted evergreen basal foliage, long bloomers and early spring/late fall color to create an immersive all-season groundcover that will slowly intermingle. Annually, this low mow is cut no lower than 4” (thereby safeguarding habitat) while the tidily trimmed perimeter utilizes remnant turf grass as visible cues to care. Dissecting the rectilinear green space, permeable hardscaping offers a gently curved path towards the front entryway; an invitation to pause and observe the landscape’s diverse textures and activity up close. Within which, a legacy planting of new specimen trees. Traditional shrub heavy foundation plantings are often static and rigid; this perennial rich redesign is structured yet airy to retain design cohesion with the naturalistic stylized meadow and offer vibrant textural all-season interest. This project blends different landscape styles to create a biodiverse habitat that is ecologically beneficial, beautiful and resilient. In high summer, a doe finds refuge for her fawn while the family’s children delight in the buzzing activity of smaller inhabitants, native bees and assorted pollinators, that now call this habitat home.

Enhancing bedroom decor with a modern take on traditional designs, this Italian-made bedding collection combines scrolled paisleys with crisp stripes. This exclusive design comes from the archives of a celebrated European printing house, designed to immerse bedrooms in Italian villa elegance. Master Bath in this San Rafael home brings the ocean inside for a couple that enjoys scuba-diving all over the world. The zinc vanity and tower they selected anchor the room over the marble look porcelain tiles they sit upon like ships. The shower and bathtub areas surrounded by the same tiles, accented in real etched marble features and collections remind these owners of the seas they have immersed themselves in and places they have visited. This bath wall color was carefully selected to remind them of the oceans gentle motion surrounding them for a relaxing getaway whenever they are at home.

Golden hour here at this 1940’s colonial that has been beautifully reimagined by its clever homeowners. Our design team sought to immerse this bold assertive structure in a native grasses heavy design featuring many coastal plain plants indigenous to this region. Animating, texturing and foregrounding with color and movement, this reactivated landscape looks like no other on this traditionally manicured, lawn-heavy street. Seedheads and silhouettes will continue to offer structure and interest through winter while rewarding non-migratory birds and wildlife with essential shelter and sustenance.

An example of vital and immersive living space for plants, wildlife and people. Design-built in summer 2022, our team (including talented local stonemason Matt Nichols) worked hard to reimagine an outdoor living space that integrates a dining area, hot tub, gathering space and raised beds. We were also tasked with successfully mitigating stormwater runoff that now channels from the rear to a rain garden in the front. A relaxed delineation of space allows for an easy ebb and flow for this young family and its pets. Cohesive materials were used throughout (such as the gorgeous irregular chunk stone steppers and retaining wall encompassing the cedar hot tub) to elevate this redesign. Over time, these designed living ‘rooms’ for people will recede into the planted habitat to feel ever more intimate and natural.
