A charred wood plank wall defines the drought-tolerant garden of a Ventura, CA bungalow. Cove House is a contemporary shoreline sanctuary in the lake region of New Hampshire. The wooded property, which includes several accessory outbuildings and an existing guest cottage, makes up a private micro-cove. The new modern house and existing traditional cottage turn both toward the lake and to each other. Thoughtful siting and landscape architecture establish a connective flow between the two residences, with a notched stone courtyard in the house inviting visitors to go back and forth. Inspired by the craftsmanship of an antique mahogany powerboat, Cove House pursues architectural quality and beauty at the highest level. The design uses materiality, texture, and daylight to balance livability and artistry. The main entrance leads through a slot-canyon-like hall where a sequence of monumental granite walls reveals a glorious, light-filled living room. A steel moment frame spanning two levels imparts unobstructed panoramic views of the lake. The magnetism of the New Hampshire waterfront is equalized by a coordinated series of openings, which attune daylight throughout the interior. Large sliding glass doors and windows draw light through the courtyard and into the home’s core – a bright and lofty kitchen. Below the kitchen, a walkout patio illuminates a refined wine-tasting room­­. Near the front entry, a gracious granite and steel stair delivers daylight to each level though open risers and glass balustrades. Skylights draw light from above and cast grazing shadows against the textured tile walls of the upper bathrooms. “We aimed to create a “beautiful reward” and an environment that our clients will enjoy for the rest of their lives.” – Marcus Gleysteen

Never judge a book by its cover they say. Axis Mundi takes that adage seriously. The circa 1920s facades of these townhouses by Percy Griffin may read neo-Georgian. But behind the door of this particular residence, glass and oak are paired to impart a warm contemporary aesthetic that better showcases the client’s collections of art by Andy Warhol, Arman, Robert Longo, Alex Katz and Lucio Fontana, and furniture by modernist icons Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand and Roland Rainer. Axis Mundi gutted the genteel, compartmentalized (read: dark) inner scheme, blowing it wide open to impart a new loft-like interior architecture outfitted with an exposed oak-and-Caesarstone kitchen and plenty of integrated, clutter-concealing custom storage along many walls. The glass—sandblasted on Poliform doors and a main-floor bridge, then descending in transparent railings along a new oak staircase to a garden level—invite light in and encourage it to ricochet freely throughout. Natural linens, vintage chrocheted pieces and lace trim were used to dress the bed. The metal daybed frame is Edwardian in style. The iron accent on the tea table imparts an industrial feel.

I chose lighting fixtures that created patterns that mimic the way the sun causes light to reflect off the lake. I wanted the furniture to impart a real sense of sophisticated warmth and style, without compromising function. I pulled together cottage contemporary mélange with mid-century modern and refinished carefully selected family vintage pieces. The home has an elegantly casual feel that’s eclectic, as if it has been assembled over a long period of life experiences.

In the home's main living area, nickel-joint wood walls impart a cottage feel, though we modernize with cable railing on the stairs, an uber-long curved window seat along the white sofa's wall, a thick marble waterfall bar in a unique cocktail station and a glass-walled dining room with a custom concrete table. As our designers walked through the streets of Paris seeking inspiration, they were struck by a sofa that sat in the front window of an antiques store. A study in 1930s workbench artistry—this upholstered treasure displayed contrasting elements of vintage, traditional and modern design—and the concept of the Club Sofa was born. Handcrafted from solid hardwood and recycled steel by artisans in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, the Club’s elegantly sloped arms and fully tufted back combine with the classic lines of a sculptured silhouette to impart a classic, traditional look infused with a modern edge.

In this foyer we added a wooden, stained vaulted ceiling with exposed beams to nlarge the space and add impact. The wood door surrounds add a handsome contrast and helps anchor the lofty feel imparted by the ceiling treatment. Chris Little Photography

An open kitchen with custom, floating, Douglas Fir cabinets topped with white Neolith counter tops and stainless Richelieu uppers, is anchored by an island of stratta marble on large scale tile. Subtle grays and browns impart serenity and warmth while swivel bar stools and an industrial swinging pantry door accommodate the quick movements of an active family through and around the space. A stunningSonneman light is suspended above the whole like a halo radiating just the right, bright light.
