This residence had been recently remodeled, with the exception of two of the bathrooms. Michael Merrill Design Studio enlarged the downstairs bathroom, which now has a spa-like atmosphere. It serves pool guests as well as house guests. Over-scaled tile floors and architectural glass tiled walls impart a dramatic modernity to the space. Note the polished stainless steel ledge in the shower niche. A German lacquered vanity and a Jack Lenor Larsen roman shade complete the space. Upstairs, the bathroom has a much more organic feel, using a shaved pebble floor, linen textured vinyl wall covering, and a watery green wall tile. Here the vanity is veneered in a rich walnut. Our bedroom for the 2020 Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens, designed for a teenage girl, plays with the dichotomy of what it means to be feminine today. Drawing inspiration from an androgynous fashion editorial photograph that depicts the interplay between feminine and masculine sensibilities, we balance soft, luxuriant fabrics with militant tassel adornments from an officer’s epaulet. Quiet, blush suede juxtaposes the slender, yet powerful snake carved into the arms of our wood lounge chairs. The etageres are bold and geometric, a delicate spider’s web of metal that imparts the extraordinary and often unexpected strength of a female. The ceiling is a fanciful and swirling custom plaster mural that hovers above an organized composition of ivory and black stripes, evoking unyielding military precision.

Project Feature in: Luxe Magazine & Luxury Living Brickell From skiing in the Swiss Alps to water sports in Key Biscayne, a relocation for a Chilean couple with three small children was a sea change. “They’re probably the most opposite places in the world,” says the husband about moving from Switzerland to Miami. The couple fell in love with a tropical modern house in Key Biscayne with architecture by Marta Zubillaga and Juan Jose Zubillaga of Zubillaga Design. The white-stucco home with horizontal planks of red cedar had them at hello due to the open interiors kept bright and airy with limestone and marble plus an abundance of windows. “The light,” the husband says, “is something we loved.” While in Miami on an overseas trip, the wife met with designer Maite Granda, whose style she had seen and liked online. For their interview, the homeowner brought along a photo book she created that essentially offered a roadmap to their family with profiles, likes, sports, and hobbies to navigate through the design. They immediately clicked, and Granda’s passion for designing children’s rooms was a value-added perk that the mother of three appreciated. “She painted a picture for me of each of the kids,” recalls Granda. “She said, ‘My boy is very creative—always building; he loves Legos. My oldest girl is very artistic— always dressing up in costumes, and she likes to sing. This cozy bedroom has the same beamed, vaulted ceiling as the central gathering area, but it is stained to impart a cozier feel. A sofa is placed at the foot of the bed and faces two plaid club chairs, which creates an inviting sitting area there. The fireplace in the bedroom is elevated for viewing from the bed, as well as from the kitchen, so when you look from the kitchen island into the master, you see the fabulous stonework and fire.
