The pool and outdoor kitchen sit at the center of the yard, forming an island that divides the open play from private vehicular access at the alley. Shifted volumes delineate private space from the open public areas. The second floor extends over the public entryway to create a covered procession with cascading steps into the southern yard that traverses the length of the living spaces. The public program expands beyond the building enclosure to encompass the yard and living spaces. A horizontal shift in the ground floor volume produces both a private courtyard away from the lively public spaces and exterior delineation between private vehicular access and public entry. Within the open, ground floor plan, a change in elevation indicates the boundary between private and public space. Custom millwork provides ample storage for the young family. Playful patterns of enclosed storage with contrasting display boxes creates a cohesive millwork language throughout the home.

This home had a kitchen that wasn’t meeting the family’s needs, nor did it fit with the coastal Mediterranean theme throughout the rest of the house. The goals for this remodel were to create more storage space and add natural light. The biggest item on the wish list was a larger kitchen island that could fit a family of four. They also wished for the backyard to transform from an unsightly mess that the clients rarely used to a beautiful oasis with function and style. One design challenge was incorporating the client’s desire for a white kitchen with the warm tones of the travertine flooring. The rich walnut tone in the island cabinetry helped to tie in the tile flooring. This added contrast, warmth, and cohesiveness to the overall design and complemented the transitional coastal theme in the adjacent spaces. Rooms alight with sunshine, sheathed in soft, watery hues are indicative of coastal decorating. A few essential style elements will conjure the coastal look with its casual beach attitude and renewing seaside energy, even if the shoreline is only in your mind's eye. By adding two new windows, all-white cabinets, and light quartzite countertops, the kitchen is now open and bright. This British Colonial theme new residence sits atop the ridgeline on the west end of Sanibel Island overlooking the Gulf. Carefully manicured dune and beach access offer breathtaking views from the main and upper patios of the residence to the beach and the sunset. A lush, tropical entry runs the length of each side property line from the road, along each side of the house, to the CCCL line and provides a dense privacy barrier from the beach access path along the east property line. Tropical bamboo, white bird of paradise, traveler palms, dwarf leaf clusia and relocated native trees and shrubs make up the dense buffer. In the front of the residence a specimen multi-stem Sylvester Date Palm anchors the center drive island while stately royal palms, foxtail palms and multi-stem adonidia palms accent the foundation of the residence. Curved coconut palms march down the driveway to the street. Individual theme gardens were created in the side yards which include a Moon Garden, Fruit Garden, Butterfly Garden, Wetland Garden, Tropical Garden and Bamboo Garden. Architectural garden elements include a Walpole garden gate, arbor and mail box with a custom house name sign attached. As one walks the many different specimen gardens, large concrete garden benches from Curry & Co. offer a place to pause while botanical plant label stakes indicate plant species and origin. This family arrived in Kalamazoo to join an elite group of doctors starting the Western Michigan University School of Medicine. They fell in love with a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home that needed a few updates to fit their lifestyle. The living room's focal point was an existing custom two-story water feature. Bathroom - mid-sized farmhouse master gray tile and marble tile bathroom idea in Los Angeles with recessed-panel cabinets, distressed cabinets, white walls, an undermount sink, marble countertops and white countertops

Jutting out from the rock cliff, this high-end home has a breathtaking view at every angle of the valley below and surrounding mountains. A portion of the pool is suspended 400 in mid-air, presenting us with somewhat of a construction challenge. It was a requirement to drain the pool for winter and as such every pipe had to gravity drain into the surge tank below. Two-thirds of the pool water volume is stored in a cistern immediately below to be circulated during the winter. In order to have the option for use throughout the year the pool was covered with a Hydralux cover and heated during the winter months. This Hydralux cover had to be installed with extreme precision in the pool, as well as, the additional Hydralux installed for the whirlpool. As the pool infinity edge challenges the water levels the cover operates on, the levels need to be maintained at all times. Special water systems were installed in order to achieve this with a simple red light indicator for the home owners ease of use. In a high-end home such as this, all work must be done to a high level of precision including installing all the equipment in the mechanical room in a neat, organized and tidy manner. Even though the mechanical systems for the pool and whirlpool operations are complex it needed to have elements of simplicity for the owner and their caretakers to operate. To further enhance the customers enjoyment of this luxurious pool, a UV, Ozone and Chlorinator Sanitation System, as well as, a Turbo Clean System were included. The exterior lighting is all managed in order for the areas to be lit without drawing your attention to light fixtures. Black Interstyle glass tile throughout the pool and whirlpool interiors give the water elements of the home a mountain lake aspect while the geometric design maintains the modern look to the home. An oculus over the whirlpool allows natural light into the covered area, creating a spectacular effect. For the perfect resort feel, a tanning ledge was included in the pool and for that late night swim, a set of LED lights were added.
