Only the chicest of modern touches for this detached home in Tornto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood. Textures like exposed beams and geometric wild tiles give this home cool-kid elevation. The front of the house is reimagined with a fresh, new facade with a reimagined front porch and entrance. Inside, the tiled entry foyer cuts a stylish swath down the hall and up into the back of the powder room. The ground floor opens onto a cozy built-in banquette with a wood ceiling that wraps down one wall, adding warmth and richness to a clean interior. A clean white kitchen with a subtle geometric backsplash is located in the heart of the home, with large windows in the side wall that inject light deep into the middle of the house. Another standout is the custom lasercut screen features a pattern inspired by the kitchen backsplash tile. Through the upstairs corridor, a selection of the original ceiling joists are retained and exposed. A custom made barn door that repurposes scraps of reclaimed wood makes a bold statement on the 2nd floor, enclosing a small den space off the multi-use corridor, and in the basement, a custom built in shelving unit uses rough, reclaimed wood. The rear yard provides a more secluded outdoor space for family gatherings, and the new porch provides a generous urban room for sitting outdoors. A cedar slatted wall provides privacy and a backrest.

The exterior of what looks like a vernacular Hamptons shingle cottage, designed by architect Blaze Makoid, is intentionally deceiving. For the interiors, Axis Mundi typically decided not to play by the rules. Instead of de rigeur nautical artifacts, floppy sofas and wicker furniture, the firm responded to Makoid’s all-white interior envelope by injecting rooms with comfortable modern elegance that’s more contemporary Cap Ferrat than Eastern Long Island. Clean furniture silhouettes—from Cassina, Poltrona Frau and B&B Italia—a Massimo Vitali beach scene, a Moooi chandelier and industrial finishes (such as the steel of the fireplace surround and the anodized aluminum of a sleek Bulthaup kitchen) spark a creative tension between indoors and out. The gray palette provides a quiet backdrop for the nature outside, except for the master suite, where custom oak panels and blue shades create a reassuring warmth conducive to sleep. Split Bright is inspired by glass triangular prisms that reflect and break light up to create layers of angular transparent shapes. The desaturated palette injects a shot of understated colour, creating a thoroughly modern rug.

With its decorative mouldings and traditional influences throughout the home, this renovation is a classic take on modernism. Approaching the gates to the property, rich red brick surrounds a beautiful traditional white lacquered timber door with lead lite coloured panels on either side. Entering into the home, deep jarrah planked timber floors lead the way through to the kitchen and living areas. The kitchen was small for my client who loved to cook as well as her daughter’s love for baking, needing a re- configure of the space to allow the kitchen to flow and function between the existing kitchen and small meals room. Outdated cabinetry made their home look tired and needed a fresh take on the newly architecturally extended home. Traditional pairings of fresh whites, marbles and glass are delicately detailed within the design, modernising the homes interior. Lacquered chalky slabbed fronts surrounded by marbled benches and splashbacks, the introduction of curves to the isolated hood and island centre piece and depth injected with deep navy to create a monochrome palette. Warmth is then allowed in by brass hardware, reeded glass, a play on texture with tiles and warmly lit surfaces. Now a cook’s kitchen.

The great room style kitchen includes Holiday Kitchens white perimeter cabinets, a custom wood hood, and island cabinetry in a contrasting finish. The kitchen cabinets are complimented by Richelieu hardware and a Prestige Quartz white countertop. The Marazzi backsplash is a stunning focal point in gray glass tile that injects personality into the design with color and texture. A Kohler white farmhouse sink with a Delta faucet sits in the island across from a seating area with barstools. The large island also incorporates extra storage and workspace, plus angled powerstrips and a built-in undercounter GE microwave. Capital Lighting fixtures offer targeted light in key areas and enhance the room's style with pendants over the island and chandeliers over the dining table. Warm wood flooring in a dark wood finish from Palmetto Road is perfect for this bright, open space and enhances the comfortable atmosphere of the room.

Inspiration for an eclectic living room remodel in Chicago

In this project, we had the joy of designing and renovating a home that embodies modern warmth, chic elegance, and an unmistakable luxurious feel, with a keen eye for detail throughout. Our goal was to bring our client's vision to life: a home perfect for both grand entertaining and the daily rhythms of family life. They dreamed of a welcoming space where friends could gather, share fine wines, and enjoy each other's company. Our highlight? Transforming an underutilized laundry room into an exquisite wine cellar. This exquisite space now proudly displays our client’s wine collection, creating the perfect backdrop for cozy gatherings as well as elegant entertainment. The transformation of the primary closet into a daily luxury experience stands out, too. We designed it to highlight every item, from the most delicate sweaters to the most refined suits, giving the feel of a private boutique. And for the beloved pets of the family, we introduced a charming addition—a doggy shower in the revamped laundry room. This delightful feature simplifies pet care and injects a dose of happiness into the home. The butler’s pantry has also received a makeover, turning it into a stunning and practical area for meal preparation. We're proud to have collaborated with our client to create a home that seamlessly blends stunning aesthetics with practical functionality, celebrating both the beauty of design and the comfort of living. This home stands as a testament to a lifestyle that values both special moments and everyday pleasures.

The impressive kitchen island offers a massive gathering and prep space as the pristine double sided waterfall edge draws your eyes to the center of the room. High-Gloss white cabinets reflect the light beaming from the cosmic panoramic door, framed in stately black compliments the living room’s acoustic slate wall. Guest Bedroom : This Edgewater condo renovation by YZDA seamlessly merges Japandi style with serene riverfront living along the Hudson. Featuring stunning panoramic views, soft neutrals, and white oak flooring, the open-concept layout promotes connectivity, while a minimalist kitchen highlights natural materials. Curated Caribbean art injects warmth, and an integrated aroma system enhances tranquility, creating an ideal sanctuary for relaxation and reflection.

Ideally, an ensuite bathroom is a luxurious extension of your bedroom – but for these clients, the space felt dated. We relocated all the fixtures. These changes allowed us to add a larger vanity, a tall linen storage cabinet, and a doubled-in-size make-up area (which the client dubbed “her new favourite seat in the house”). Large vintage-inspired tiles, floating rustic shelves, and sleek grey cabinets inject style; a steam shower and modern fixtures add another layer of luxe.
