LiLu’s most recent work with these long-time clients was to freshen up significant spaces in their Minneapolis home. Staying true to our original concept of creating a traditional, welcoming, and comfortable retreat, these homeowners have expanded on their love for living and entertaining in a sophisticated, yet casual style. The great room is light and bright, featuring two large sofas that anchor the seating areas on both ends of the room. Original pieces of furniture were covered in neutral fabrics that emphasize texture. Accessories inject color and detail into the space. The dining area invites guests to pull up a reupholstered chair and enjoy long conversations around the custom-designed table. A large area rug stretches across the floor as a natural centerpiece of color and pattern. It’s one of several, including the whimsical take on a tree of life, that are custom-designed for the space. The guest room was updated to be more inviting for returning adult children and their spouses. Despite the stately brick exterior, these owners boldly flaunted convention by choosing a sleek contemporary esthetic for their kitchen remodel. For continuity, the home’s hardwood flooring continues throughout. Unadorned flat panel doors create a soothing environment in light-reflecting glossy white on the perimeter, with soft matte gray on the bar and island. Beautifully veined “Blue Savoie” marble countertops and backsplashes inject organic color and pattern into the scheme. To ensure that light penetrates the space, wall cabinets at the sink and bar stop short of the ceiling for an airy ambiance, with horizontal lift—up doors. Stacked cabinets flanking the hood are vertically hinged; top doors align with cabinetry above the paneled refrigeration columns. Easy entertaining is guaranteed with the convenient wet bar, which includes a paneled beverage fridge and icemaker. Minimalizing visual distraction is accomplished by limiting the use of handles to appliances requiring them; otherwise, base cabinets have unobtrusive integrated channel pulls, while uppers have touch latches. The hard-working island houses both microwave and paneled refrigerator drawers, along with extra storage and plenty of seating. Enhancing the dining experience in the breakfast area is a custom curved banquette, with light-filled views of the bucolic, backyard, and pool.

Instead of de rigeur nautical artifacts, floppy sofas and wicker furniture, the firm responded to Makoid’s all-white interior envelope by injecting rooms with comfortable modern elegance that’s more contemporary Cap Ferrat than Eastern Long Island. Clean furniture silhouettes—from Cassina, Poltrona Frau and B&B Italia—a Massimo Vitali beach scene, a Moooi chandelier and industrial finishes (such as the steel of the fireplace surround and the anodized aluminum of a sleek Bulthaup kitchen) spark a creative tension between indoors and out. The gray palette provides a quiet backdrop for the nature outside, except for the master suite, where custom oak panels and blue shades create a reassuring warmth conducive to sleep. "Sun-Kissed Sanctuary" reimagines the traditional dining room as a versatile haven, perfect for year-round conversation and creating a lasting first impression. This project catered to the client's desire for a space that seamlessly blends casual elegance with organic elements. The design team employed a calming palette of soft whites and airy blues, setting the stage for a serene escape. Textural harmony was achieved through a layered approach: radial plush linen chairs provided sumptuous comfort, while woven pillows and a shagreen-wrapped coffee table added a touch of rustic charm. A lush fiddle fig leaf plant, strategically placed in the space, injected a dose of life and echoed the organic design theme. Respectful of the existing foundation, we integrated the client's existing rug, a statement chandelier, and a captivating wall thread hanging into the new design. To elevate the space further, we introduced custom elements that instilled a sense of unique character. Hand-crafted wood beams and wall trim, reminiscent of a sun-drenched porch, added warmth and architectural interest. Oyster-hued wallpaper on the foyer ceiling provided a bold textural contrast and a touch of coastal sophistication. The added white trim was accentuated, drawing the eye upwards and creating a sense of verticality. Game On is a lower level entertainment space designed for a large family. We focused on casual comfort with an injection of spunk for a lounge-like environment filled with fun and function. Architectural interest was added with our custom feature wall of herringbone wood paneling, wrapped beams and navy grasscloth lined bookshelves flanking an Ann Sacks marble mosaic fireplace surround. Blues and greens were contrasted with stark black and white. A touch of modern conversation, dining, game playing, and media lounge zones allow for a crowd to mingle with ease. With a walk out covered terrace, full kitchen, and blackout drapery for movie night, why leave home?

This elegant roofing project installed in Bellevue, Washington started its life with a cedar shake shingle roof, a common roof in the Pacific Northwest especially if it’s a house like this in the woods. The roof looks good until it leaks and this one had leaks. The leaks created wood damage. During the tear-off, Three Tree Roofing had carpenters come in to help the roofing crew with wood repairs and some needed paint repairs. After the repairs were complete, the roofing crew installed plywood over the entire rooftop and built the roof with underlayment and perimeter metals. We replaced all the skylights as well with brand-new energy-efficient argon gas-filled double pane skylights. Most importantly, in the wintertime, argon gas-injected glass panes help keep the heat in, and in the summertime, they help keep the heat out. CertainTeed Presidential TL is about as close to looking like wood as possible. It turned out amazing. This project roof with CertainTeed Presidential TL is Class A rated for fire resistance, the industry’s highest fire resistance rating. The color is Aged Bark. It looks fantastic. In this primary bathroom remodel, a once uninspiring space was completely transformed into a fresh and modern bathroom that excelled in both aesthetics and functionality. To achieve this, the room was opened up by removing parts of the walls surrounding the shower and toilet. The introduction of a half pony wall struck a perfect balance, offering privacy while allowing light to flow freely throughout the room. Unique and stylish tiles were meticulously chosen for the shower and bathtub, injecting a sense of intentionality into the overall design. A beautiful new vanity became the centerpiece, complemented by a large mirror and new vanity lighting to complete the look. The addition of gold fixtures throughout the room added a touch of luxury, elevating the bathroom into a space that marries both form and function seamlessly.

Gallegos was contacted by a client about a project where stone was not just to be an accent material, but the main visual and perceived structural element to create a timeless architectural composition. To further the endeavor: all veneers and dimension stone must be locally sourced and sustainably quarried. The design called for a moss rock veneer with cut stone trim. Sourcing the sandstone moss rock was simple because there were several local quarries to use. The problem was with the trim pieces. Gallegos selected Colorado Buff sandstone for the trim since the buff body was a good contrast to the moss rock and it is a stone that can be cut to size. One main concern with any sedimentary stone is hitting what is known as a “dry” layer in the ledge. This is an area in the stone between sedimentary layers that has not solidified or cemented. It is still granular and can lead to future stone failure as water penetrates these layers and creates freeze/thaw issues. To avoid this, they used an epoxy injected into the dry layers to help solidify the material and prevent any future failures. The client also wanted sustainable materials for their countertops and bathrooms. Many of the interior stones were either reclaimed materials or were sourced from Colorado quarries – Calacatta Lincoln was used extensively. Gallegos sourced tiles from reclamation projects in Europe and Asia for use in the master bath and front entry areas. For many of the countertops, the owner’s interior designer spent hours looking through remnants and applied several throughout the residence. Willow Court is a spectacular and dramatic nod to stone masonry, something the owner, architect, and builder can be proud of and, for the most part, was built with the environment in mind.

A young family moving from NYC to their first home in Westchester County found this pre-war colonial in Larchmont New York in need of a serious overhaul.
