Formerly the workshop of mid-century artisans, this manufacturing building in NYC's SoHo neighborhood was transformed into an 11,000 sf townhouse. The home features a full level spa, two-story living room, six bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, and rooftop addition with pool. Neighboring buildings were underpinned to lower the cellar to accommodate the spa which features dry stacked stone walls that blend into the swimming pool and hot tub and are featured throughout the entire level. The architect’s vision was to have visual recognition that the space was below ground. Thinking about the striations of the earth beneath its surface, he was inspired by the Therme Baths and Spa in Zurich where all the walls are clad with narrow strips of Vals quartzite. After seeing a rendering, the stone supplier advised that only certain stones could survive constant submersion in pool water and the stone should not have the cleft face he had originally imagined due to bacteria issues. Honed, Super Grey granite with white veining was used – the slabs cut into long 3” wide strips installed at random lengths to accentuate the concept of layering as found in the Earth. The kitchen was designed to feel more like a furnished room to integrate with the family room. The architect addressed this through materials and the design of the over-sized island. The countertop is the only veined stone in the kitchen – a beautiful single slab of Super White marble. The island is clad in mirror-polished stainless steel, transforming it into a beautiful piece of furniture that blends into the space. A two-story living room with 22' ceilings created a problem of comfortable scale. The key was the fireplace – the strongest vertical element in the room. By using horizontal vein-cut slabs of light-colored Driftwood marble, the scale of the space instantly became more intimate.

The outdoor living area utilizes bold radial lines to offer a sense of unobstructed openness along the panoramic riverside views. Special consideration was given to the design and engineering of the outdoor space to allow a massive 60-foot span between columns, resulting in an unparalleled view. Playful geometric shapes speak to an easy livability that belie the bold and glamorous design. The second floor deck provides seamless access from the guest bedrooms, office and exercise rooms. The use of glass railing and zero-edge doors carefully preserve the view. In the home’s interior, leather-finish Cippolino marble paving was painstakingly end-matched to create the illusion of one continuous piece of stone traveling through the whole level, under a bathtub made from a single block of Cippolino marble, and transitioning into the master bath’s shower walls. On this same level the kitchen is outfitted with a 15 foot long book-matched Lapis Lazuli island countertop shaped at its perimeter with a “knife edge,” adjacent to a countertop and sink clad in book-matched Cippolino marble. Matched vein-cut travertine paving covers the floor and seamlessly continues through the living room and out onto the exterior sundeck, terminating at the swimming pool which is completely bordered by travertine coping containing slots for drainage that allow the top edge of the pool’s water to become perfectly aligned with the top edge of the adjacent travertine paving, thus creating a level surface from the kitchen to the infinity edge of the pool.

2018 HNA Awards Honorable Mention - Combination of Hardscape Products - Residential (size more than 4,000 sf) Contractor: GoldGlo Landscapes Producer: Techo-Bloc Designer: GoldGlo Landscapes The clients wanted the driveway, walkwayss and patio colors and textures to compliment the colors of the brick on the house. The client requested that the front walk extend into the yard to create a focal point. Sufficient access to the carriage house and ample parking for guests were important to the client. The client wanted a large entertaining space with a grill and a large wood burning fireplace, and a smaller fire pit patio with pillars and a pergola to create a separate intimate seating area. All materials and products were carefully chosen to bring out the compliment and enhance the desired style of this property and the look of the new home. The vast hardscape areas surrounded and completed with landscape plantings that provide four seasons of stunning color and interest truly creates the look and feel of a Federal style Estate.

Set within a rural parcel in the heart of Northern California wine country, the Summerhill Residence consists of 3 separate buildings (a main house, guest house and detached garage) that are situated to maximize the connection between the natural and the man-made. The distinction between the indoors and the outdoors is intentionally blurred as interior and exterior spaces extend in all directions to the gently rolling hills of the Sonoma landscape beyond.
