Cottage kitchen photo in New York

This fabulous lakeside home was in terrible need of a make-over. We learned about their family, entertaining habits, friends, and what they were looking for in a second home during our interview with them. In addition to a new kitchen, they were also in need of help in the bathrooms, and a few other things around the house too.

HGTV Curb Appeal: The Block hired us to transform the curb appeal of this Oakland Hills home. Drab and dingy to start, we worked with designer John Gidding, and contractor Chip Wade, to create this front yard dream space. We constructed the space within 2 weeks to meet the production schedule, stopping to allow the cameras to capture the action, and to interview homeowners and neighbors. We interviewed Chad(left) and Bobby(right), the team of Everett installers who worked on this job! Bobby, What got you into this profession? My father did a LOT of carpentry and home improvement projects. I've been building things since 16 years old and started in the concrete business, and eventually found my way to Renewal! Chad, what was your favorite tool? Cutback tool. It's the only custom tool we use. Chad, what was unique about this job? Definitely the homeowner, we listened to a ton of 80s country music! She loved her dogs and when we told her we had a selfie competition, she had the idea to dress up her dogs so we could take a photo with them in front of the patio door we installed.

After interviewing 8 custom home builders, Andre chose to build his retirement home with us. His two bedroom, two bath home includes a garage and a shop underneath. By building a smaller home we were able to infuse beautiful modern design touches such as the Finlandia cedar sauna, polished concrete floors, a spectacular tile shower, exceptional energy efficiency, an expansive TimberTech XLM composite deck, and 24-ft. tall vaulted living room. To give the light and airy look that our client desired, we began the dining room design by hanging custom 21' tall sheer drapes from a custom curved iron drapery rod. This was accomplished by making a paper template of the curved window wall and mailing it to the drapery rod vendor to have a custom curved rod manufactured for our dining room. Next, we hung a 60" diameter dramatic chandelier from the ceiling. This required reinforcing the ceiling to carry the weight of the new larger chandelier, and by erecting three tiers of scaffolding for three men to stand on while installing the new chandelier. The space is anchored by a 72" diameter dining table with tall back dining chairs to emphasize the height of the room. An 81" tall piece of artwork hangs above the modern buffet and provides contrast to the white walls. Tall buffet lamps, custom greenery and a textured woven rug complete the dramatic space. A simple color scheme and large dramatic pieces make this dining room a breathtaking space to remember.

Amy Birrer I have been working as a kitchen and bath designer in the Pacific Northwest for 13 years. I love engaging with new clients, ascertaining their needs through various interviews and meetings and then collaborating as we build their finished concept together. The variety of design styles, room layouts and function changes so much between one person and the next that no two finished products are remotely the same. This fluidity allows for endless possibilities for exploration in my field. It keeps the job interesting and has always given me a particular sense of reward and accomplishment as we near completion. The greatest personal recompense in this chosen profession is being able to walk with a client through this process and come out the other side with that client feeling elated with the end result.
