From skiing in the Swiss Alps to water sports in Key Biscayne, a relocation for a Chilean couple with three small children was a sea change. “They’re probably the most opposite places in the world,” says the husband about moving
from Switzerland to Miami. The couple fell in love with a tropical modern house in Key Biscayne with architecture by Marta Zubillaga and Juan Jose Zubillaga of Zubillaga Design. The white-stucco home with horizontal planks of red cedar had them at hello due to the open interiors kept bright and airy with limestone and marble plus an abundance of windows. “The light,” the husband says, “is something we loved.”
While in Miami on an overseas trip, the wife met with designer Maite Granda, whose style she had seen and liked online. For their interview, the homeowner brought along a photo book she created that essentially offered a roadmap to their family with profiles, likes, sports, and hobbies to navigate through the design. They immediately clicked, and Granda’s passion for designing children’s rooms was a value-added perk that the mother of three appreciated. “She painted a picture for me of each of the kids,” recalls Granda. “She said, ‘My boy is very creative—always building; he loves Legos. My oldest girl is very artistic— always dressing up in costumes, and she likes to sing. And the little one—we’re still discovering her personality.’”

ANNAPOLIS FILM FESTIVAL 2016
Design Concept
With film makers visiting from all corners of the country and globe, my vision was to highlight the beauty and mysteries of the Chesapeake Bay through Zentangle© inspired art.
The hand painted backdrop in the main seating area depicts some of our waterway's magical creatures. We are home to three different species of jellyfish, as well as ribbed mussels and abundant submerged aquatic vegetation.
The interview area screen is hand painted. The red herring swimming against the flow is particularly relevant to this festival for its diversification from the mainstream. It also highlights the river herring project in our bay, funded by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation.
Finally, the conference area displays Maryland's state fish, the Striped Bass, on a driftwood easel from our shores.

Founders, Melinda Joy Miller (author of the Shamanic Gardening: Timeless Techniques for the Modern Sustainable Garden) and Kim Colwell, her daughter and interior designer collaborated on this special garden project. See press for 5 page spread in Pasadena Magazine and interviews with the partners. Each gardening project utilizes their background as feng shui masters, as well as Kim's background as an interior designer. The special sauce in our projects are Melinda Joy's extensive and comprehensive approach to gardening which includes her being a medicine woman, cultural anthropologist, and expert in permaculture, sustainable gardening, and herbology.

What a fun project to work on with an artist and her husband. We collaborated to create a unique soft modern kitchen that has hints of mid-century modern details while expanding the clients storage and cooking space. Subtle details that make a bold statement. It was through the clients interviewing process that they choose to go with Signature Designs Kitchen Bath over other large firms because of the personal collaboration connection.
We created a curved island that resembles a piano while it maximized there countertop space it left plenty of room for them to entertain many guest in their nook.

"The Alta Vista collection has the most beautiful oiled finish! I love the raw look it has! The movement in the wood grain and knots add so much character. These characteristics in particular are what draw me to this collection of hardwood." - Heather Petersen Design

I have been working as a kitchen and bath designer in the Pacific Northwest for 13 years. I love engaging with new clients, ascertaining their needs through various interviews and meetings and then collaborating as we build their finished concept together. The variety of design styles, room layouts and function changes so much between one person and the next that no two finished products are remotely the same. This fluidity allows for endless possibilities for exploration in my field. It keeps the job interesting and has always given me a particular sense of reward and accomplishment as we near completion. The greatest personal recompense in this chosen profession is being able to walk with a client through this process and come out the other side with that client feeling elated with the end result.

This gender neutral kid's bath is whimsical take on the a traditional bath. We used subway tiles in vibrant orange, red and yellow in a random pattern.

HGTV Curb Appeal: The Block hired us to transform the curb appeal of this Oakland Hills home. Drab and dingy to start, we worked with designer John Gidding, and contractor Chip Wade, to create this front yard dream space. We constructed the space within 2 weeks to meet the production schedule, stopping to allow the cameras to capture the action, and to interview homeowners and neighbors.

Our client found Design Connection, Inc. through reading featured articles in local magazines for many years. Her home was 25 years old and never been updated. Their furniture and accessories were well past their prime. The brick fireplace, the focal point of the room, looked dark and dingy. Upon completion of our first interview with the client I realized her style was transitional and the facade of the fireplace would not work with her new furnishings as well as the golden oak paneling.
We brought in our very talented faux painter to access the paneling about changing the color to a soft neutral glow and we completed the transformation in one a very short time.

After interviewing 8 custom home builders, Andre chose to build his retirement home with us. His two bedroom, two bath home includes a garage and a shop underneath. By building a smaller home we were able to infuse beautiful modern design touches such as the Finlandia cedar sauna, polished concrete floors, a spectacular tile shower, exceptional energy efficiency, an expansive TimberTech XLM composite deck, and 24-ft. tall vaulted living room.

This homage to the Spanish Conquistadors sets the tone for gatherings, special events, study hall, working space and enjoy the games in the television at the bar area. The bathrooms were framed with images of the royalty. Once you open the door you are in for a big surprise...

"My favorite product from Hallmark floors is the Alta Vista Collection. In fact, I am currently building my own home and will be using this product. From the oiled and wire brushed finish comes the most fantastic patina and texture! This floor is truly a classic, timeless feature in any home." - Heather Petersen Design

This fabulous lakeside home was in terrible need of a make-over. We learned about their family, entertaining habits, friends, and what they were looking for in a second home during our interview with them. In addition to a new kitchen, they were also in need of help in the bathrooms, and a few other things around the house too.

We focused on creating powerful statements with decorative and architectural lighting, to illuminate a space otherwise largely devoid of natural light.
We were honored to be interviewed about the project and how to incorporate unique and centerpiece lighting in Interior Design and Renovations by Brick Underground.
