Nestled in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Washington, D.C., the Linnean House is classical in both plan and elevation throughout its award-winning house plans. The main mass, comprising of the most formal and public spaces, is a spatial triptych along a symmetrical main axis. Inside the luxury home, the limestone façade, simple but well-proportioned with classical elements, extends itself into both the entry portico and main foyer with consistent proportions and materiality. The master bath vanity, in similar fashion, is introduced as a central free-standing form anchoring itself as a notable presence in the space. Lastly, the wine room is designed as a series of free-standing heavy wood cavity walls spanned only by a hint of glass.

The introduction of pink shades in the interior The interior in pink color allows you to show taste preferences, with a spectacular result, only a few basic rules need to be considered: ● Optical experiments - a combination of colors will add volume to both decorative details and furniture. If one wall is covered with light paint, the room will become visually more spacious and the ceiling will be higher. Tip: a table and a sofa in light lilac colors will appear larger in size, which looks very advantageous in small bedrooms or bathrooms. ● A thorough knowledge of the color palette will allow you to properly organize space. The colors of warm shades add to the interior lightness and comfort. Cold - positively affect mood and energy balance. ● Each combination of colors should be weighted and well thought out. To ensure that the interior is not tedious, it is recommended to paint in pink, maximum 2 walls, and in no case, not all 4. ● Complete the interior with other colors: brown, yellow-gray, turquoise. The interior should be bright accents. If you prefer dark colors to the walls, complement them with beige, white and pale lilac flowers. ● Paints should be harmoniously combined with the chosen style of the interior. Pink, perfectly harmonizes with the classic, romantic, Scandinavian, retro style and pop art style. ● Total should be in moderation. A good interior is harmony and balance of colors. We recommend in the same room to use one shade for the accent and two main. ● All color shades in the same room must be in harmony with each other.

As the entryway to the home, we wanted this foyer to be a truly refined welcome to each of its guests. As guests enter they will be greeted with this polished and inviting entry, which contrasts dark colors against stunning tall white millwork along the walls. As a designer there is always the challenge of working with aspects of a room that your clients are not going to be changing. For us this was the flooring, to which we fitted with a custom cut L shaped rug that would allow us to tie together the foyer to the stairs and better coincide with the rest of our designs. We added a touch of bright color in the side table with gold and light yellow elements, while still tying things together with the blue and white detailed vase that mirrors the rug design. As the eye travels up the stairs the iron wrought spindles wonderfully accent the stairway’s dark wood railings. Further upward and this captivating grand chandelier accentuates the whole room. The star of the show, this breathtaking chandelier is enhanced by a beautiful ceiling medallion that we had painted within in gold to capture the elegance and light from this chandelier. As a first impression of the household, this foyer space is truly an introduction to the refinement and dignity of this home, and the people within it. Custom designed by Hartley and Hill Design. The purchasers of this Roland Park home had a long standing relationship with PBA, having successfully completing several projects on two previous homes with the firm. Therefore, the level of trust and familiarity allowed for a very aggressive design and construction schedule. The project included the creation of a new mud room within the footprint of an existing covered porch, the renovation of 4 bathrooms within the house, the re-tasking of various rooms throughout the house, introduction of new lighting and building systems, the renovation of a laundry, the creation of a “bunk room” on the third floor, restoration and repair of various exterior elements, significant landscaping, and creation of a spectacular “man cave” in a previously dreary basement. Serving as a winter retreat for a family of world travelers, a thoughtfully composed program of calm, comforting spaces imbuing casual elegance is presented effortlessly in the landscape. Oriented around a central grand oak and its adjacent loblolly pine, the home wraps around them, celebrating the engagement of nature while maintaining privacy from neighboring homes. Working within height restrictions intended to keep massing as low to the ground as possible, we moved the ground plane up and the expression down to present an appearance of a home that lives low. Calculated plays on scale and proportion intentionally have different effects from different vantage points, ensuring the viewer perceives the architecture as humanly scaled from each important introduction to the home. Ascending a landscape stair that winds around the central oak and extends into the entry vitrine sitting at base flood, the entry foyer operates at two scales as limestone stairs matching the exterior ascend between walls passing portals that reveal limited views of activity within. 2022 Design + Service Awards Jury Citation for Residential New Construction, AIA Charleston

Cabinetry was chosen for its clean lines, offering ample storage for cookware and utensils. The appliances were selected to blend seamlessly into the backdrop, further enhancing the uncluttered look. The introduction of an island with a sleek countertop allowed for more prep space and a casual dining area, promoting a fluid and engaging flow throughout the room.

Our introduction to the Tahoe site was in late winter, on a clear sunny day with filtered light and long shadows through snow-laden fir and pine bows. It made a strong impression, stored for future consideration but the impetus for the design came soon after the spring snow melt. A powerful sense of horizontal layering of vegetation and various stages of decomposing downed timber on the two-acre site, juxtaposed with pine and fir trees and the dense canopy of the surrounding forest. The site is located near the historic 1960 Olympic Nordic track, situated on the edge of wetlands and seasonal streams. The homeowners were previous clients and dreamt of having a retreat in the Sierras away from their home base in Berkeley, CA. Among skiers, bike riders, hikers, and boaters, they found the ideal central location for their home base near Lake Tahoe. The home is organized as a series of linked spaces, each providing a unique sensory experience and connection to different parts of the site, both vertically and horizontally. The design includes extensive use of glass to create a true indoor/outdoor connection and maximize natural light. At the center of the site are two large fir trees, which the building respectfully wraps around in an L shape to create a focal point in the landscaped courtyard. A refined, context-driven palette of natural materials including cedar, oak, fir, and steel is used to harmoniously blend in among the surroundings. The construction includes advanced details such as thermally broken steel beams supporting layered roof planes engineered to hold snow rather than shed it. Designed to resist significant load, we exposed the steel structure as a recurring element in the interior spaces. The resulting columns and support beams contribute to the familiar design aspects of each room and provide a better understanding of how the building was constructed. The second floor features cantilevered volumes that reach out into the nearby evergreen limbs, likening the experience to being in a tree house. The house incorporates features such as radiant heating, solar panels, and operable windows for passive cooling. Fire safety measures include the use of naturally fire-resistant materials, a Class A roof construction, sprinklers, and drought-tolerant landscaping beyond the defensible space.

Gregg Waller of Reico Kitchen and Bath in Wilmington, NC collaborated with JC Hazelton Builders to design a farmhouse inspired kitchen featuring Green Forest and Masterpiece cabinetry. The kitchen features Green Forest cabinets in the Park Place door style with a White finish for the perimeter, complemented with an island in the Masterpiece door style Turner in Maple with a Shortbread finish. Appliances and countertops were provided by others. The client expressed their appreciation saying, “I literally love every aspect of our kitchen. It is exactly what we wanted. We did not have to sacrifice our vision which was a welcome experience. Gregg was so helpful in hearing what we wanted and then delivering. His knowledge about the products available really helped us achieve our design goals. He created digital examples of our kitchen, laundry and bathrooms which helped us in making our final decision.” “The biggest challenge that I faced was creating the look the client wanted in their new home while staying within a budget that was set prior to our introduction. I decided that Green Forest Park Place cabinets would be the best choice for the majority of the project. Masterpiece cabinets were needed to get the exact color that the client wanted for the kitchen island,” explained Gregg. “My favorite part of the design is the range wall. I like the way the warm wood tones of the hood balance the white shaker cabinets and brick backsplash. The clients were an absolute pleasure to work with. This contemporary new residence near the ocean in Ft. Lauderdale, FL is partially clad with a unique wall panel system fabricated from RHEINZINK’s PROTECT LINE of architectural zinc. The PROTECT LINE has a clear coating that provides durable surface protection in aggressive climates. The transparent coating slows down the aging process and preserves the initial appearance of the zinc. Approximately 1,000 sq. ft. of PROTECT LINE blue-grey RHEINZINK was fabricated by Architectural Innovative Metals, Inc. (AIM), Dallas, into AIM’s Ingot Design Series wall panel system. The Ingot Design Series is a pressure-equalized system that offers superior design flexibility and durability in both dry joint and rain screen applications. This condo foyer is a perfect introduction to the interior, setting the mood instantly. We decided to extend the hardwood right to the entrance, since guests have a long way to walk on a carpeted corridor before arriving at the suite. Traditional paneled doors replace basic sliding closet doors. Hand-painted pinstripes add whimsy and interest to the beige walls. While there is no room for a console table in the foyer itself, we used the walls on either side for small pieces of furniture that anchor a display of the clients' art collection. Rather than being just a pass-through area, the hallway now feels like part of the living room.
