The goal. A modern reinterpretation of a Mediterranean home with light, airy spaces leading to jaw dropping views of the ocean and private beach. Architecturally, the character of the existing house was respected while creating larger spaces to distinctly alter its appearance. The design language was simple, organic, and elegant. Classic details and a modern approach created a sophisticated and refreshing new layout. Prominent works of art featured upon entering this seaside escape by Picasso, Allora & Calzadilla, Anish Kapoor, Robert Pruitt to Blair Thurman invigorate the overall calming color palette. Contemporary furnishings, bright red color accents, luxe finishes and textures with elements of classic and contemporary design tell a story about the transformation of this property into an exquisitely bold and refined personal paradise.

A Mercer Island couple wanted to transform their yard from mushy lawn into a more usable, beach-like space. We added new concrete pads to connect the stairs to the waterfront complete with salvaged, cedar logs around a deconstructed wood-burning firepit, invigorating the space and creating a place to relax and entertain right on the water. Closer to the house, an ipe deck built around a new Paloform gas firepit created a new outdoor room for enjoying endless summer evenings. LED landscape lighting completes the improvements. Transforming a client's dream into reality is always an exhilarating journey, especially when it involves creating a luxurious BBQ kitchen that blends seamlessly with the natural beauty of a lakefront view. Xpand's design blended with the homeowner's vision: a year-round culinary haven where one could grill to their heart's content while soaking in the serene landscape. The transformation of the screen porch into a stone and tile sanctuary, complete with state-of-the-art air exchange and climate control systems ensures a smoke-free environment. The installation of custom Dekton countertops and Twin Eagles grilling and smoking appliances elevates the space, making it not just functional but also a statement of elegance. The 12' glass garage door with a motorized screen, invites the outdoors in, creating an immersive experience. Descending to the lower level, the wellness center awaits as a haven of relaxation. The custom-built sauna, with its warm cedar interior and soothing LED lighting, promises a tranquil escape. Adjacent to it, the large cold plunge tub stands ready to invigorate and contribute to a holistic wellness routine. Whether seeking warmth in the embrace of the sauna or the refreshing chill of the tub, this space is a testament to the art of living well, a perfect complement to its idyllic setting on Prior Lake!

This intimate transitional space is organized around a pair of black steel-and-glass doors that frame a direct view of the rocky courtyard and circular wood-clad soaking tub beyond. The symmetrical doorway composition is complemented by a cantilevered white bench, creating a simple place to pause while maintaining the room’s clean architectural lines. Crisp white walls reflect abundant daylight, while dark tile flooring and black window frames provide visual weight and continuity with the exterior architecture. A deep red patterned rug and red-and-black cushions introduce concentrated accents of warmth and personality within the otherwise restrained palette. Three exposed-bulb ceiling fixtures add an industrial note and establish a subtle rhythm overhead. The interior draws from modern mudrooms, Japanese-inspired thresholds, and minimalist country retreats, emphasizing function, clarity, and a close relationship with nature. The view through the open door makes the room feel fresh and invigorating, while the stone, wood, and soft textiles create an experience that is comfortable, grounded, and restorative.

An open 2 story foyer also serves as a laundry space for a family of 5. Previously the machines were hidden behind bifold doors along with a utility sink. The new space is completely open to the foyer and the stackable machines are hidden behind flipper pocket doors so they can be tucked away when not in use. An extra deep countertop allow for plenty of space while folding and sorting laundry. A small deep sink offers opportunities for soaking the wash, as well as a makeshift wet bar during social events. Modern slab doors of solid Sapele with a natural stain showcases the inherent honey ribbons with matching vertical panels. Lift up doors and pull out towel racks provide plenty of useful storage in this newly invigorated space.
