A Seattle couple needed to take advantage of our amazing summer weather and asked for a way to watch movies outside. We were up to the challenge, designing a custom concrete bench that by day serves as built-in seating and transforms at night into a perfect spot to catch a flick on the fly! In our work, we see lots of big homes with big spaces. We also see small homes. And we’ll be the first to tell you that size isn’t what matters. What’s important is scale. Through design, we can make a small space look big—or make a big space look small. But more important, we can use scale to make your home interiors meet your functional needs while reflecting your personality, values and style. The Eyes Have It. When you step into a room, where do you look? Directing the eye is one of the magic tricks that designers use to create a particular effect. Bright red apples in a simple glass bowl immediately draws the eye to a kitchen counter. The hefty wood trivet and rounded concrete planter containing succulents echo the shape of the apples and the bowl, while adding new materials. A wood and metal stand holds an iPad or book for easy recipe reference, all atop an elegant light granite counter. In a separate arrangement, ceramic artichokes create shape and shine but maintain the neutral color for continuity. In this context, the eye is drawn immediately to the bright red color. That’s why sparse seasonal decorations can be more effective than heavy ornamentation. We can actually take in more when there are fewer items to focus on.

When challenged with the task of turning 500 or so square feet into the most functional residential space one could dream of, the limits of the words “tiny house” did little to falter the creativity and good executed design of this project. From a logistical standpoint, the square footage absolutely had to stay small – but there are so many inventive ways to use that space and end up with something that looks much more finished and comfortable than a camper! Pivoting through each functional item on the list – from the kitchen to the bedroom, and the loft space to the little side yard – all of the “comforts” of easy living were still incorporated for a super stylish end result! To begin at the beginning – the core needs were to develop a functional cooking and dining space, small gathering area for TV, a bedroom that offered comfortable sleeping quarters, full bathroom with walk in shower and walk-in closet with laundry… of and of course, any extra storage we could muster! The kitchen design focused on a great “galley” style layout split strategically by a side entry door to a sweet outdoor dining and cocktail space. Capitalizing on a long island that met the side wall, we were able to include more shallow storage on the back of the island beside the pair of counterstools. Mirroring the fridge wall with a built in pantry and storage bench, this half of the main living area provides a comfortable but sweetly styled area for bistro table dining and lots of fun display and closed storage. Across the room is the living area – with windows perfectly placed for real furniture and a fabulous statement art piece! While the spiral stairs to the loft storage space interject some here, their low profile keeps the visual really clean. As a hub of the home – this area is the main entry / dining / entertaining / storage / kitchen all in one! Moving to the back side of the house, accenting the smaller bedroom size with a big picture window adds so much beautiful light and a lofty feel to this “master”. Tucking a small vanity/desk area into the corner allowed for really great dedicated storage and work space that meets a multitude of needs (and keeps things sort of tucked away so that when guests come by there isn’t a lot of clutter seen through the doorway! The master bath is 100% style with the cheerful and funky tile that offers a HUGE aesthetic impact for such a small space. Eclectic lighting and a pretty, softly patterned wallpaper layer up the details too. Then the closet houses a stackable washer dryer (that just! fit through the door!) and ample storage for a full wardrobe. When gazing up – we just love LOVE the view to the pitch of the ceiling and the painted box beams that offer such a perfectly clean visual to collect the feel of the overall home. As a makeshift guest room and storage area, the loft offers ample space for bulkier items and things that need to be tucked away on a daily basis – but as needed offers up a comfy little home-away-from-home for anyone sleeping over. Hidden up here also is the HVAC and water heater so the “side” attic also has some closed off storage that can be used for items that don’t need a temp controlled environment. Overall – we love the feel of this home space and while “tiny” in size, it really does deliver in so many ways when it comes to style! Like a dollhouse for adults ? We can’t wait to build our next one!!

This is the new view from the master bedroom, into the bathroom. A large mirrored surface makes for easier primping in the morning! Notice the subtle light below the vanity? This is an LED light strip, installed on a dimmer, that can act as a safety light, night light, or to add subtle romantic light when the mood strikes! ;)

Inspiration for a small rustic 3/4 bathroom remodel in Boise with gray walls, a vessel sink and wood countertops

This client approached us to help her redesign her kitchen. It turned out to be a redesign of their spacious kitchen, informal dining, wet bar, work desk & pantry. Our design started with the clean-up of some intrusive structure. We were able to replace a dropped beam and post with a larger flush beam and removed and intrusively placed post. This simple structural change opened up more design opportunities and helped the areas flow easily between one another. Special attention was applied to the show stopping stained gray kitchen island which became the focal point of the kitchen. The previous L-shaped was lined with columns and arches visually closing itself and its users off from the living and dining areas nearby. The owner was able to source a beautiful one piece slab of honed Vermont white danby marble for the island. This spacious island provides generous seating for 4-5 people and plenty of space for cooking prep and clean up. After removing the arches from the island area we did not want to clutter up the space, so two lantern fixtures from Circa lighting were selected to add an eye attracting detail as well as task lighting. The island isn’t the only pageant winner in this kitchen, the range wall has plenty to look at with the Wolf cook top, the custom vent hood, by Modern-Aire, and classic Carrera marble subway tile back splash and the perimeter counter top of honed absolute black granite. Designing a kids bathroom isn't always the easiest - especially when its a shared space between a brother and sister! We wanted this bathroom to appeal to both of their tastes while utilizing a design that won't need to be updated anytime soon! Lively pops of deep teal from the vanity and wallpaper were paired with subtle pastel pinks on textiles and hardware. Brass finishes and wooden accents balance out the colorful design and create a cohesive style that suits the kids and parents! The kitchen isn't the only room worthy of delicious design... and so when these clients saw THEIR personal style come to life in the kitchen, they decided to go all in and put the Maine Coast construction team in charge of building out their vision for the home in its entirety. Talent at its best -- with tastes of this client, we simply had the privilege of doing the easy part -- building their dream home!
